    Question 3.31 mistake???

    Hey Guys!

First time poster here. Hopefully you guys can give me some input. I recently traded in my 2006 5.3 chevy crew cab for a 2013 4x4 super crew ecoboost with the towing package and a 3.31 rear axle. First off, there is no comparison what so ever. My new ford is unreal. I absolutely love it!

I will be driving my truck to commute to work and lite duty activities through out the week. However I do alot of great lakes fishing. Mostly lake erie 3 to 4 times per month. Its a 120 miles of highway each way from Pittsburgh. My boat and tandem axle trailer weights about 4400lbs. Its usally me and 2 buddy's in the truck and some light gear.

So my question is did I screw up with getting the 3.31? I do not plan on getting a heavier boat. Will the 3.31 tow it ok. I will not be pulling any crazy loads. Just the boat. Did I make a mistake????

    Thanks

    Dave

I would have gone with a 355 or 373 but you should have no problem. If you have a 2wd its not a hard change if you don't like it.

That's not much of a load. I think you will be fine.

The difference is like 1000 lbs between the 3.31 and the max tow with 3.73.

I just notice with the 3.31 I'm not getting good town mileage which is most of my driving.

    I get 17-18 mpg, 12-13L/100km.

I got the 3.31 on purpose because I don't tow anything (hardly ever, and only load the truck bed with bikes and gear)... SO a couple hundred less RPM's at highway speed is a welcome compromise... I can already tell where lower gearing (higher number rear diff ratio) would have been better when I mash the pedal at low speed since the 3.31 feels pretty tall, but overall I'm happy since I care most about cruising at highway speed... The 3.31 does that great, but you give up a bit of low end grunt. Will you miss it?? I wont.
