Epicor p21. We are on our way out, but it's gonna be a few years. Shopping now, SAP has some nice options, Netsuit looks nice but $$$. Not looking forward to that nightmare at all. I'm the sole it person , so I do everything and that on top of training 70 people might kill me.

These stock tires suck in 2WD

I'm sick of having to switch my truck into 4WD to get through my neighborhood after it has been plowed.

We had such incompetent exchange guys. They told us that we cannot vmotion their exchange servers because it messes things up. After a year one of their hosts went down and forced a migration to occur. Nothing happened. They just didn't want to do any work after hours PITing their servers after we did anything lol. They got in a lot of trouble. As for DBs virtualizing it or not does not make a huge difference if you have good resources behind it on the metal. The main thing is the storage speed. That will make or break anything honestly. As long as the network is good and you have a good speed you should be fine. I would not like to P2V that unless you have separate storage like a SAN. We had to clone a VM that had a 1.5TB drive and it took around 24hours and it was into the same cluster and same datastore. I probably should have just copied the vmdk lol oh well. It's a sensitive SCADA machine and wanted management to see the progress bar so they knew I was working

Our DC and exchange are still on metal, but that's going to change soon.

Still can't get a response from our "rep" from dell, guess ill just order it off the damn website.
For a second I thought you said a snapshot was a backup...
Then I read it again lol

I don't claim to be an exchange expert but once its up and as long as your users are not idiots. I have seen cases where people cut it short on resources because "its just email" which can make it slow, its just a big ass database.

our DB resides on a local 5 disk ssd array to keep latency down, seems to do ok. Exchange will be going on a mirrored ssd array, will give it better IOPS then the current 5 platter array can give it and about the same bandwidth. I don't mind exchange, as long as the users aren't idiots and always needed their mailbox restored.

Still nothing from dell of HP, i get im only buying one server right now but its still like 18k.

I have not had good luck with anything exchange related. From users to admins lol. I know nothing about exchange but I do know you need to take in consideration, as you said, it is a very large database and needs resources to keep it happy.
Is your SSDs local or across the network? we have a netapp filer and have had really good luck with that.

Man, did you try to reach out to someone like CDW? When vendors weren't responsive we went that route and they hound them until they get an answer lol

local, its 10 bay server that was built 50/50 ssd vs platter. 1.9tb ssd and 8tb of platter storage. I have no clue what they dumped so much disk space on it, but it is what it is, i had nothing to do with it.

new server will be all ssd but just enough for DB, exchange and the vmk's. We don't have a ton of storage needs so an appliance outside of the qnap we use for file storage would be a waste. The qnap is ok, but lacks some of the features on the appliances, but it was only $4k.

I'm going to put a call in to CDW and a few third parties.

Man, Exchange is taking some grief here. Lol

I have no outsourcing or tech support contractors. I literally must host, manage, and maintain our Exchange locally and have for 20 years. (Ironically I will be migrating everything to 365 this year as I decommission our 10 year old 2010 servers)

I have found Exchange to be incredibly robust and reliable because of the ability to separate the roles across multiple servers. So with the CAS role running on independent VMs, another couple of servers managing the transport, and then finally 3 copies of each database hosted in a 3 node DAG of mailbox servers.

Everything virtual. Everything on local cheap SATA drives.

We are a 24/7/365 organization with 32 locations worldwide. When we have a catastrophic hardware failure the Exchange client hardly would even notice. Heck, I won't even get out of bed and replace the dead VM until the next day.

I wish EVERYTHING we have deployed had a deployment model that was as versatile.

It will be interesting to see if 365 can match the uptime numbers that self hosting has afforded. I'm actually skeptical.

But at least I can blame it on someone else when it's not up. Lol

I'll be retiring soon enough though.
At least I tell myself that.

What has pissed me off today?
The fact that @snakebitten, @Envious, @duck9191 and @tvsjr are having some sort of IT tech squabble in a foreign language that is more difficult than Mandarin to understand........ LOL
