Bad Turbo, what do you think?

I was out camping this weekend and towed the trailer home yesterday. Was on my 5Star 91 tow tune with 91 Chevron in the tank both ways. The way home I had really stout headwind and was averaging 7.5 mpg until the last part of the trip. I had 6th locked out most of the way. No weird noises and plenty of power.

I jumped in the truck to go mountain bike this afternoon(~24 hrs after towing) and was getting this noise. Its pretty loud. This video is with the windows rolled up. It only happens when I get into decent boost, cruising along on a flat road sounds normal.

A couple hundred shy of 70,000 miles. The truck was tuned at ~12,000 miles and has been on 5Star, Unleashed, Gearhead and BCB tunes during that time.

One thing I do want to point out, and I am not claiming this is the reason for the failure, was that my BCB tune was pushing my turbos to the point that flow was flat lining and my wastegates were going full closed at like 5000 rpm. I didnt realize this until I got an underboost code and decided to do a log. I saw that the airflow was flatlining at >4500 rpm and noticed my wastegates were going to 100% WGDC. In my opinion, this is not good. It meant the turbos were probably spinning insanely fast as the ECU attempted to make the boost it wanted but couldnt.

I stopped using their tune after this. None of my other tunes exhibited this, they all held close to 50% WDGC out to 6000 rpm. I really hope this didnt do initial damage and then the towing was the nail in the coffin. Part of the issue is that I am at 6500' and my turbos only max out at ~40 lbs/min of air flow, just barely more than the stock tune.

My 2016 started making that same noise a month before turn in. It only did it when cold and as soon as the engine warmed it stopped. I thought it was a heat shield making that sound and as it got hot it expanded and stopped. Never thought about it being a turbo.

Mine does not seem to stop, not that I drove it that far but the engine was up to temperature acording to the gauge.

Sounds like a warped manifold, and the metal gasket is vibrating , look for a missing stud on your manifolds or black marks around manifolds. At your elevation you have a great potential for overspeeding the wheels. Some Gt turbos would help you out keeping wheel speeds lower.

I'm in the same boat as Mass. I'm at high elevation and all of my tunes have high WGDC to build boost. I talked to a few tuners but it looks like if I got GTs I would have to get a bigger HPFP.

This is a good possiblitity. I know when my leaky exhaust made that noise it was more of a chirping sound, however that sound can manifest as all sorts of crazy.

Can you isolate which side it's coming from? I would remove the piping and see if you can drop an endoscope in there. Get your finger in there and see if you can wiggle the impeller.

Either way, someone is going to have to tear into that thing.

I wonder if you could run stock turbo power till your ready to get the HPFP.

It seems to be the right/passenger. I need to have my wife powerbrake it and see if I can listen with the hood open.
