    4WD Speed Limitations

This question is for all of you that use your 4WD frequently. Is there speed limitations while in 4WD?

I have searched the forum, the owners manual and googled for the information but have struck out. I think I understand the shift on the fly system and when in 4HI you can drive safely at highway speeds, but is your speed limited while in 4L?

I use 4WD only to get up and over Donner Pass to visit family and that is infrequent. This truck is a fairly recent purchase and my last truck that had 4WD was a Toyota and it had never exceed speeds while in 4WD. So before I go up and over Donner, I would like to know what my limitations are and not go nuclear at 7000'.

Thanks for the info. I know a little common sense goes a long ways, and if you have the ability to drive by the seat of your pants, you can feel what your vehicle is trying to tell you.

I just haven't found anything in writing that gives you any operational guidelines other than how to engage 4WD and to switch into 4lo, that you do it at 3mph or less and in neutral.

IIRC, even Toyota gave you operational speeds of 60/25mph for hi/lo operation. 25mph in 4lo sounded like a screaming Banshee! I don't know if the 150 is like that as I haven't had to use 4WD yet, but Totyota gearing was not highway friendly anyway.

    Thanks again,

As stated 4hi is just like 2wd except for turning.
speed in 4lo will be much lower because of the gearing reduction. If I had to guess, because I don't know the reduction ratio, I would guess so,ewhere in the 50-60mph range. Would I go that fast in lo? No way.

Well, now you guys have given me some ideas, thanks. Common sense should prevail on conditions and speed.
i just don't want my transfer case or any other rotational parts to grenade on me because I'm exceeding design limits. Good information, thanks fellas.

I think you'll find the rev limiter pretty easily in 4lo. That's your limit. Lol

I did just over 60mph in 4LO once to see what mph the eLock Diff would disengage when in 4LO.

I don't recall the rpm I was doing at 60mph, but at 60mph in 6th gear in 4LO, the engine was sounded like I was in 2nd gear in 4Hi.

The ford 4 wheel drive is one of the best for engagement and ease of use.

You can turn the 4H on and off at any speed and it’s seemless.
