I am working through removing my 3.5L from my 2011 F150 4X4 XLT XTR which has a hole in the side of the block. I am starting to look for a replacement engine now. Is it only 2011-2014 that are compatible? I heard 2011 and 2012 are more prone to failure, should I really aim for finding a 2013 to 2014?

Where I live I have access to buy complete written off vehicles at auction. If I had an entire spare truck, could I install a Gen 2 if I transferred over computers and other stuff or is that just asking for problems? Or can I install a Gen 2 even without transferring over anything else, or do I forget Gen 2 all together?

Thanks in advance for any info!

I think you should PM Rbrown he will be able to steer you in the right direction!
I would say upgrade to a Gen 1 `14, everything would swap out, but that's me.

From what little I know, stick with Gen 1.

To confuse things, the motor I built for my truck is essentially a 2016 with 2011 heads.

I'll save you asking me why: because Ryan told me to.

I know that 2011-12 have a difference in one of the heads and something that it operates. I remember @RBrown saying that it was better to stay with 11-12.
