I have a buddy who has a 2013 F-150 with the 3.5L eco boost engine. He called me today and said he check engine light came on. He took it to autozone and had them pull the codes. Here is what was pulled:

P054A - cold start “b” camshaft position timing - over advanced - bank 1

P054C - cold start “b” camshaft position timing - over advanced - bank 2

Said he noticed when he was trying to get on highway and had to give it a lot of gas, it felt like the engine was missing. Also said that his fuel economy has been really bad the last couple of weeks.

I asked him if he noticed when the engine was cold or had been sitting overnight if there was rattle noise on start up. He said that he had noticed a rattle sound a few times on start up then it goes away. Said he also gets oil changed when the info center tells him to get oil changed. My guess is the place that preforms the oil change does not use a motorcraft oil filter or motorcraft oil.

From owning a 5.4 3V before myself and having to replace the VCT’s, tensioners and timing chains, could this be the start of the same sort of issue on his 3.5? Or is this something else causing the codes and the missing at higher rpm’s?

I have watched a few videos about the timing chains and tensioners on the 3.5 and saw that the chains were loose or stretched but I was not able to specifically find a lot of info about the codes above.

The truck has just over 85,000 miles on it.

Check engine light is still on, looking for guidance before he takes it in to the dealer or mechanic.

Thanks

So I took mine it, the timing code was historic as well. They removed it, the timing chain was done on this truck in Canada and has been full functional to date. I bought it and started acting funny. No lights but getting chain smack on cold start up, took it to get the oil changed and there was 8 quarts "gas smell". I will wait and see if the noise goes away otherwise Im going to have to trade it in. good luck with yours! this timing problem is not fun on these trucks!
