2017 brake controller help, please!

I made a few threads related to this under the user name Blackcuda. It's not exactly apples to apples but if anyone is adding a brake controller it might help if they read it. There are numerous threads around about brake controller installs on this site as well. My truck originally only had a 4 pin connector and no hitch. Even with the standard package there was a harness end in behind the dash and everything was plug and play. Still dialing in the WDH for the camper but point being everything worked perfectly.

Zippy, I can understand spending the $300 and having it done professionally. I remember getting the ford brake controller for about $160 ( not the lowest they can be found for) and then buying an adapter to connect the laptop to the truck for about $20. It can be done easily with the for scan software with the free extended license but it has to be a PC based operating system. So if you already have a 7 pin this can be done for under $200. If you don't have anything at all it can be done under $250 ( another $50 for a 4/7 combo and the harness to replace the original).

Zippy, it was a bit of a hassle honestly. It sounds nice dropping a truck off and going out to lunch :) Thanks for replying to the post I have going! Having a bit of a challenge reaching perfection with the WDH!

Good luck but it will go smoothly!

@ EcoXLT, this is not included with a 2015+. Open it up and read the instructions. " I THINK" that kit should be opened and installed and will give the trailer battery charge feed on the trailer plug power. Black box is a relay, the orange thing looks like a fuse, and I believe the harness is for a brake controller….. look into it more but this whole situation does not exist with 2015+ trucks. EcoXLT, if you got by this long without trailer stuff maybe leave that kit in the glovebox lol, no sense in doing work for no reason either :p

The 2015+ detects the trailer and puts power on the hot wire, so relay/fuse situation entirely different. It has to do with the newer truck having a BCM which I can dive deeper into but its off topic. 2015+ already have wiring for the controller in the dash.
