2017 F150 Oil pressure dropped. Pulled over immediately. Now I need an engine rebuild.

We need help because something seems way off here. There were no oil leaks, no indications of problems whatsoever. Suddenly, the oil light comes on saying the levels are severely low. We pull over immediately (it took about half a mile to get to the right lane to pull over). Like I said no leaks, no warning signs before hand. We find the oil plug on the ground and oil everywhere. Had the truck towed to a Ford Dealership. The dealership is now saying the engine is destroyed and we have to pay $10,000 to have it rebuilt. Mine you this is a 2017 with about 42,000 miles on it that has never had any issues. And we pulled over as soon as there was an issue.

I strongly believe this was some sort of mechanical failure due to faulty parts made by Ford. Has anyone else had this happen?

BTW did you know that the oil pan and plug are plastic???

Who changed the oil last and when? Sounds like the plug was not seated correctly when it was replaced.

This story raises more questions than it answers.

1. Oil pressure drops alerting you to a major issue and yet it takes another half mile to pull over.

2. You miraculously find a oil plug immediately on either a road so busy you couldnt pull over on or immidiately under your vehicle after stopping, either of which seems implausible.

3. How did you locate said plug when you had clearly no idea what it looked like or was made of?

4. Lastly no way in hell Ford is paying for your engine. Not even with the best lawyers on the planet. Better start looking for who did the last service.

I couldn’t even let my head go there. I simply assumed they back tracked where the oil began dumping and stumbled across the drain plug.
My head went there, but didn’t feel like going to down that line of questioning at this time. It sounds like user error (whoever changed the oil) more than manufacturing error. It’s not unheard of that those plastic oil drain plugs break but I’ve only heard of this happening during the oil change process.

There are so many it holes in this story.
I began to discredit but I'll just wait for OP to respond to what's already here, think we scared him off though.
Regardless of what or how this happened, it sucks to lose a low mileage healthy motor like this. And it happens every day to somebody.

99.99% of the time it's human error during an otherwise mundane task of an oil change. It stings! (I witnessed it once on an almost brand new G35 Infiniti. That lady was truly a victim of a careless mistake)

Infiniti, as a manufacturer, rightfully claimed innocence.
I doubt Ford, as a manufacturer, is any different.

I agree. But this isn't Fords fault.
Its either the owner or a service gone wrong.
This is why I still change my own fluids.
If it goes wrong I KNOW Its on me.

That was kinda my point.
The OP does sound like they need to determine fault, and I completely understand the nature of that.
But they have my sympathy regardless. And so does anyone else that loses a perfectly good motor because $35 worth of oil escaped the pan.

It's just a dang lousy scenario

Also side note, I read somewhere once, that those plugs should be REPLACED every oil change. I have done so every other.
I assume this to be more regarding the O ring life than the body of the plug but out of caution I replace every other. Not that this helps the OP at this point.

It just amazes me. Doesn't know the drain plug is plastic on his own vehicle but is qualified to say whether or not Ford designers and engineers created faulty parts.....

It’s not that amazing. How many of the millions of F150 owners do you think go the entire length of ownership having a dealer or 3rd party perform all the service. No need for them to ever crawl under the truck and inspect a oil pan if the truck doesn’t miss a beat.

If OP is like those owners, you can start to see why his first response was to place liability on someone else (Ford or 3rd party).

A fair point. Although in the spirit of equality that shouldn't matter?
