I am thinking the same. Reuse my Cometic gaskets with my ARP head studs in a new short block.
My concern is that I am relying on Ford tech to do the work.
Also they will need to redo all the timing stuff on the front end.
I have not had issues with my exhaust manifolds yet. Just thought a good time to install new performance ones vs stock.

If I do a new long block, then I have OEM studs and gaskets compared=not great.
Less concern with Ford tech messing up the install of heads, timing stuff.=good.
Will I have the whole cam phaser issue again in 20k miles???

Yes Cometic gaskets, not the OEM.
Happy to order new ones, but these can be reused.
Cometic is out of stock and lead times can be an issue.
At least they were when I ordered a couple months ago.
If available i am fine ordering new.

If the cost is about the same, I'd just do a complete long block and pull the whole thing in one piece. Save yourself the trouble of having to open that sucker up and take a gamble on what could be questionable parts in the head swap. That's a pretty significant failure.

I think I really want to eliminate the possibility of head gasket failure again though.
Any idea of what type of time would be needed if I did the long block, and had them pull the new heads off and install
Cometic and ARP head studs. I would think that is a minimal job on a brand new motor out of the truck.

There are millions of trucks on the roads with OEM heads and gaskets. I think if you looked at the numbers enough you'd find that aftermarket head installs have a higher fail rate than those from the factory. Not so much because of install, but because typically people are pushing the motors harder. You got a bad apple, but don't let that consume you're thinking. You're never going to "eliminate" the possibility of blowing one again. It also depends what you plan to do with the truck. If beefing it up gives you a peace of mind, there's that too. I know all too well that Ford engineering is bare bones minimal engineering, but for a stock truck, I'd do the swap and call it a day. Besides depending what you buy there should be a warranty with a new motor. You won't get this putting your own heads on there.

I have and want to continue to run my current set up. I am running an E50 MPT tune, and she runs great. Stock turbos. Otherwise I have AMS downpipes, full Rousch exhaust. Hot / cold side pipes. Titan 2 IC. AMS cold pipes to turbos and intake. It runs a 12 1/4 mile on street. I have thought about adding meth injection. Other than that I have no plans to take it any further.
They will give me a 3 year on long block and a 2 year on a short block.

I googled it and it says you can. Wow. Unbelievable. I’ve never heard of reusing head gaskets before. With the complexity of these motors I couldn’t do that. If the used gaskets doesn’t come off perfectly I wouldn’t even chance it. (Talking about your Cometic gaskets.)

Split the crank would be my guess.

I just can’t imagine that with this low of power.
I wonder how much it would cost to have truck shipped to Livernois or RMB motorwoks, and have them pull apart and install new build motor. I mean if it were a couple grand more, I think that would be a winner. I just don’t trust dealer.

I just read a bunch of horror stories about RMB and Ryan. So that’s no longer an option.
Ford removed the balancer and said the crank shaft has a lot of play in it. There should be no play in that at all. I am going to head out there tomorrow hopefully , to put stock tune on it. I will see if I can get some visuals on it, with the belts and crank pulley removed. If it is moving around as Ford says it is, then I know there damage inside.

First I was going to say the balance is broken, or crank snout, as that’s what it looks and sounds like.., bolt might of come loose, and it’s possible something broke, or let loose when the balancer went bang.we are all just guessing without being there..
ford sells a 3.5 ford performance ecoboost complete for about 9k it comes complete and with a fully forged motor, not fords power3d forged stuff, all aftermarket..it’s part number
  • M-6007-35T (if it’s still sold I looked and couldn’t find one)
  • ford racing.with turbos and all..
  • if your able to get one let me know, as I’ve got a truck it’s 20k miles on it in perfect condition, and I’ve been wanting to increase the power with CRP big turbos I‘m just worried about blowing it up past 475whp as it’s right at 400 whp now ..I just don’t drive it much.
  • also jasper sells a forged motor too, not sure on the price ,these are options to the big boys ,it’s cheaper than 22k for a aftermarket forged long lock which I’m not sure why they are so high compared to ford, and jasper..but the other guys you mention are the bomb, I thought about going with them, simply due to the close deck option they sell..
  • good luck to ya..

  • Yeah I heard some bad stuff about RMB too, the local tuner down here is suing him, or was last yr or so ive not spoken to them in awhile, as they had two of his motors blow, 1 didn’t make it off the dyno on a low boost setting..

I went and looked today. The tech showed me the video he took, while the crank pulley was off. He was able to move the shaft of the crank around easily. This leads me to believe the crank has cracked in similar fashion as I have found while searching the web. I put truck back to stock and removed Ngauge. We are going to attempt to cover under extended warranty. Though I am sure it will get declined like previously. I am also awaiting a price range from Livernois.

I would go with a longblock and the warranty that will come with it. Ford is not going to warranty a shortblock install with aftermarket studs and head gaskets. I doubt that they would even agree to install those parts.
If you are set on using head studs then I would get new ones as they could have stretched and could compromise the head gasket seal quality. I would personally never reuse head gaskets no matter what they are... it's not like a tranny pan gasket that's easy enough to swap.
Sounds like you may be happier with an indy shop that is willing to install what you want. Either way, this will not be cheap. Good luck.
