I live not far from one of the major draws on the coastline for snowbirds. I will admit that we get a little tickled at how in the town of Rockport, for example, you can suddenly get ran over in the parking lot by bluehairs that can't see. Stuff like that. It IS a noticeable change in auto traffic behavior.

But I never got the feeling we didn't want them here since places like Rockport wouldn't be Rockport without them. It's really good for the local economy, obviously.

As for out-of-staters in Colorado..... I seem to recall a constant stream of RV's entering the state just west of Cortez. Every year I visit. Dem ain't Texans.

Yeah, it’s mostly Texans here in Pagosa, but we get people from New Mexico. I work in the electrical trade and we work for a few vacation house rental companies and the Texans are so nice! Yeah, I don’t get why Pagosans get so mad because this town thrives off the people from out of state.

It's only human. Out-of-towners are convenient for all kinds of fodder

I only get mad when they drive ridiculously slow. Either in the left lane, or on mountain roads. And, I am a native Texan....

That’s true, or taking pictures of the deer, like who cares about deer??? Lol
Wait!

Texans are taking pictures of deer?

That doesn't make sense. We have 9,000,000 of them and they are setting off the automatic door openers at hospitals for crying out loud. Lol

You sure it isn't the moose? Because yea, I take those pictures too.

No it’s deer, seriously. I’ve witnessed it myself. We don’t have moose in this area.
@boostkingMatt I dunno if you’ve ever seen the show “Longmire” but they made reference to Pagosa Springs as “The Paris of the Southwest.” How romantic!

I’ve got a buddy who lives there and he says literally not one person ever has referred to it as such haha.

But I do love getting down there and to Durango whenever I can. I’m from the metro area, so probably not much better than those other “foreigners” lol. But I am at least a CO native, so I’m due some slack .

Yes I’ve seen all of it. I don’t remember hearing that though haha!

yeah, you do get some slack for sure 😉
The stretch from Cortez to Durango is where I choose to spend summer IF I get to do what I want. (Family needs can nix my getting my way. At least the last couple of years)

Echo Basin Ranch, right outside of Mancos, is where I set up camp. For a couple of months if possible.

I DO NOT buy property in Colorado. I DO NOT raise the co$t of living for the natives. I simply come and LEAVE my money in their economy and then go home before snowfall. :)

Chavolos Mexican restaurant and the hilarious folks at P&D grocery get a fair sum of my discretionary income during my visit. The fella that owns Fahrenheit Coffee Roasters also goes out of his way to roast his best beans for me. He has no clue how much he contributes to the quality of my stays. AT&T gets a shout out for putting a low traffic LTE tower on the adjacent summit, ensuring me not getting in trouble at the office, if you know what I mean. I never get less than 12-20mps, so there's nothing I can't do.

And finally there's a really nice little church up near Summit Lake that always made "Willie Nelson" feel welcome. I stick out like a sore thumb, but they are sweet folks.

Point is, I regret that we Texans have misbehaved enough to get stereotyped as a nemesis. But all I can really do about that is try not to be part of the problem? Lol

Exactly. Sounds like a grand time to me honestly.
Lots of post resonate w/ me here.
Recently sold a gorgeous home not far from Mancos w/ a private canyon lake. Big trout.

The Durango Herald had an article that basically said enough is enough. Not singling out tourists from a particular area, just the “too good” of a job town tourism boards have done, All enabled by egregious lodgers tax. Downtown Pagosa is the prime example that comes to mind. As we speak it is a parking lot, not a US Hwy. The infrastructure can not handle the demands of multiples of the year round population.
Telluride is apparently taking action to curb summer influx by redirecting the tax. Tourism boards have had their little kingdom w/o regard for impacts on locals forever. Time to re-examine wtf did we expect.

I bought some dirt in Idaho. I’ve already got the feeling from some there that they instantly don’t like me because of my California license plate. Sad.

Hey, that’s awesome. My best friend lives there. Well, that is unfortunate but I think what they are scared of is people from CA bringing their politics there. I don’t know where you stand, ain’t my business, but it’s sad that if you have a CA plate they automatically think you are a die hard democrat who wants to take all their guns.

You will always have a few of those people no matter where you go.
I can promise you. You will most likely like me as your neighbor.
Im not going to change anything, I like staying in my own bubble,I’m OCD clean, I’ll help you in anyway I can, and I’m quiet, with the exception of starting up my old car. Finally, I want to keep my guns.
Honestly , I’m forced into retirement due to health reasons and I need a place that’s slower with like 500,000 less people around me and a little cheaper to live in. And I’m pretty sure Idaho doesn’t have side shows all night long in every intersection of my town and drive by freeway shootings. Plus closer to my daughter in Utah.

Yep that’s true. Yeah, well that’s good I want to keep my guns too. You will be accepted by Idaho for sure. It’s just sad that people think anyone with a CA license plate is a nutcase. I’ve lived in CA before, and I’m not a nutcase.

Note that I only VISIT Colorado. And the people of little Mancos are as nice as I have ever met anywhere.

But for my lifestyle, 9 months out of the year I can't beat good ole gulf coast. It's pretty amazing in the fall and spring, and even winter is great except nothing is green. (I so get tired of browns and greys)

But June-August? Colorado elevation is a life saver. Crisp morning air is unbeatable. All of this matters more the older I get.

OH, and my second favorite place is Ourey/Lake City. I know I know, that's really 2 places. But I consider them joined, if you know what I mean. The Alpine loop is where I like to play going back and forth between them.

Oh man, yeah Ouray is quite spectacular. I’ve only seen pictures though. Never been further than Silverton. I have friends that live in Montrose. That’s some beautiful country up there.

Wait. If you go to Silverton, that's the starting point for one of the most magnificent drives anywhere anywhere, to Ourey.

I know you already know that, of course.

It helps to do it early morning though before the RV's hit the same road. Although I can't look out the window if I'm driving and there aren't any trees on the shoulder. Freaks me out. Lol

On a motorcycle it's a once in a lifetime must.

That’s what I’ve been told. My family has been up there but not me. Gotta go sometime for sure.
