Welp... figured it out with a pry bar and a hammer. Wish I had been a little more forceful with earlier before the pumpkin dump and EPAS workout! While not as secure as a C- clip, I definitely understand now why Ford did it this way! All it took was several light whacks with a 4lb sledge while prying it out and it did the trick!

Looks like I'm a little late here, but now you know you didn't need to get at the pumpkin to get the axle shaft out.
Might as well stick some new fluid in there while you're at it. (I'm guessing that's already done as well).
