mine always gave a little hum and vibration through the steering wheel in 4A. Same with my dads expedition that I just drove for the last 12 days. What always irritated me the most with 4Auto on my 2014 is that the traction control system was set to kill mode and even the slightest hint of wheel spin caused the truck to totally lock down. I would use it to leave my neighborhood on snowy days, and many times when I was trying to pull into the main road I would just ended up barely moving as the traction control freaked out and the PCM cut engine power. It was so bad that I went into the tuning and changed how much the engine power was reduced when traction control was activated, that way I could still power through and keep momentum and let the brakes handle the wheel spin.

4Auto is very active. Its not just waiting for wheel slip so im a little suprised to hear you can feel it "engage". If I remember right, when I was datalogging my 4Auto clutch PWM it never fully released the clutch, just kinda ran it at 5% duty cycle when not needed. Then when you would get on the gas and start accelerating it would proportionally add more clutch duty cycle based on how far you pushed the pedal.

4Hi and 4Lo added more duty cycle on the clutch then I ever saw 4Auto apply.

Technically all 4 wheels always get equal torque it’s just that if one wheel has no traction then it’s torque is low and so are all the other wheels since they are all the same

if you drive down the road and floor it, it’s not that only 2 wheels get the torque, they all do.
