Engine started making ticking noise tonight

My 19 3.5 EcoBoost had the cam phasers replaced last June at 43k. A month later it started throwing several codes including P0018 & P0021 and was idling very rough. I reset codes and it was fine for about a month. This time I reset codes and notified dealership. They explained to me that those codes had nothing to do with the cam phaser job. I told them the codes were cam phaser position sensor and how could that not be related. I have been getting the run around for quite some time and Sunday I had an emergency in the family. I had to drive to Baton Rouge and I just happened to stop for some gas and noticed this awful ticking noise coming from my engine. Long story short my first dealership doesn’t have time to look at it but I found another one locally that will look at issues this Monday. Wish me luck.

Sorry to hear thats going on. Hope things are better now.

For the ticking, did you happen to take a look at the discussion on cam phaser replacement? There is a post, I believe by @snakebitten, of the official post for guiding diagnostics of noise on the "hot knock" that happens.
Side note, I still have a ticking/tapping noise on my '17 that seems to not want to go away. Might have to just live with it, loudest under the truck vs top end. Will be standing by to hear what that dealer says.

Brought truck to different dealership than the one that did cam phaser job since they were giving me the run around. New dealership just called and said that after doing some diagnostics they believe it is piston slap on #2 cylinder. They needed my permission to pull plug and inspect with borescope. They will contact me after inspection.

I’m not an expert but that doesn’t sound like piston slap to me. More like valve train noise maybe.

Kinda sounds like VCT knock. You could always unplug each one and see if the noise goes away.

So dealership said that the AFE air filter was not connected and that it sucked debris into engine causing scarring on cylinder wall. They said that they unplugged injector on #2 cylinder and the noise stopped which proves that it is piston slap. They said that this will not be covered under warranty and tech said engine and turbos need to be replaced to the tune of $15,000. Dealership said that I would need to bring it to original dealership to see what they will do since the air filter was off.
I’m really confused because after reading through a ton of information I found a letter from Ford talking about this issue. It says that the cam phaser issue could present itself in 2 ways. The distinctive noise on startup and then another way is the ticking noise. It said that the ticking noise will start after engine is first started and warmed up but wouldn’t do it at first startup.
I actually thought the problem hadgone away because when I first started cold engine there is no noises. It only starts ticking after a couple of minutes of running. It seems to me that if it was piston slap that it would do it no matter if it was cold or warm. But I’m no mechanic. I’m so frustrated, confused and disappointed that I’m having these problems. I have been having issues since a month after they changed cam phasers and it started running like crap. Can someone please give me some advice.

Oh boy. Unfortunately some dealerships will use any escape goat they can.
by AFE air filter I assume it's the whole aftermarket intake that you have on the truck?
This is one reason I ALWAYS put everything I can back to factory before bringing any of the f150's I had in for warranty work.

I think we all know darn well that your intake did not cause that issue

Ask the dealership to show you the debris they found in the engine.
Then call Ford customer service or whomever it is that we can reach out to that help resolve these issues and let them know you feel the dealership is being unethical.

Wow just wow........ and yes OP, the piston slap would always be there,,,,,,, Take it back to the dealer that did the cam phaser, start from there and keep ford customer service in the loop....
