Ok so some may know about this some may not but it is something that is coming on strong with many showings at dealerships across America. So as most know it is timing chains that are prematurely stretching causing this startup noise. The news is that there is updated parts out there to address this and Ford now has a TSB on this issue formally admitting to it being a common problem. I go over it all in this video. There is also a link to just how it sounds in the description of the video on youtube. Hopefully more dealers will be willing to dive into the engine with some guidance from Ford now.

I've read about the last 20 posts as starting from beginning is not going to give me the answers quick enough.seems there's a few different TSB's to fix the rattle failures of the chain..the last basically meaning everything has to be replaced on the front of the motor, chain guides, phasers ,etc if you have all the TSB's done.. luckily it hasn't happened yet knock on wood !

ppl are inquiring how much it's going to cost to repair if they are out of warranty or after making a high mileage truck purchase ,which to me seems a little werid ,because myself previously being a honest tech we would send customers of varying manufactures to the dealer to have a TSB done to save them 100's or 1000's of dollars & being a independent garage myself 80% of the vehicles are all out of warranty.. example we sent lots of Nissan V6 vehicles with 100k-300k & 10 plus yrs old for TSB 's on bad injectors which were covered at no charge by the dealership,so is ford any different aren't TSB's covered warranty or no warranty as it's a known failure which they have agreed to repair ?

No tsbs have not and will not be covered when warranty is up.

Well that sucks, although thinking back it would depend on the type failure if they covered it after the warranty,or if it's listed as a recall..
has anyone lost a motor due to this timing issue ?

No recall on timing chain failure nor will it be covered if your warranty is up. To Ford it's just noise you hear and if within warranty it's fixed under it as TSB, if out of warranty then it's up to you if you want it fixed or not. I've spoken with many techs at different dealers on this and all of their foreman said, it's not like it's gonna blow up or anything ... Lol... That's the answer you probably will get. Many have tried under emission warranty or the regular warranty, I myself went and got TSB just in case. It happened, I took it in and fixed under the extended warranty. $1200 vs $3000 or like dealer sent their invoice in for my repair which ended up being like $4800.

Bottom answer is, if you ware out of warranty it's your pocket money that will pay for the rattle fix. No one else. Cheers.

I hate having any motor of mine taken apart after yrs of seeing ppl screw up at dealers & other shops.so I used to repair my own stuff even with a base warranty, but I have little choice now,& it's been hit & miss even at tunning shops.anyway I will look into the TSB,I just hate not being able to see or double check the repair myself any more.Although I TRUST most engine Machine shops most over all.
I'm going to check the local Byran ford service centers ratings,Small town dealers scare the crap out of me.they wouldn't even align my truck because it had aftermarket control arms & bags, while the ford dealer in Houston was fine with it,although I just went to a place that specializes in lifted truck suspension alignments....with MY LUCK I end up with a problem I hadn't had yet.

Wow I now took the time to read a large amount of this thread & it literally scares the crap out of me..I have never gotten extended warranties ever ! Although my truck is a 14,& I think the 3yrs is up Aug 17,it's only got 9k miles on it..it's hard to tell if the fix isn't working or if a lot of ford techs just suck after reading so many trucks came back worse or with the same failure..
i love my truck but it's got me rethinking coyote ? Plus twins would of been a better option..

Ehhh... Don't let it scare you. I've gotten the rattle about 10k after I bought my truck used, got the extended warranty, took it in, got it fixed and since I got another 50k pretty much left on my extended warranty I'm not worries. Let it blow and they'll be putting a new one. Extended warranty cost me only $1200. So far, I saved Ehhh... Don't let it scare you. By the time my warranty runs out, I'll probably be looking at something else or at least have it all paid off and fixed.

The fix, she's running awesome! Fuel mileage has increased a bit, no more rattle, no shakes, no under boost, no funky business. So far I'm a happy owner. [emoji16]

Here is a side by side for you guys having this work done. Correct tensioner is on the right, incorrect on the left View attachment 107121
Thks again you wouldn't happen to be able to post all the correct part numbers for all the TSB's combined to fix this PLS..
that way we would be able to either give it to the dealer ahead of time .or hopefully verify the numbers on the receipts afterwards thks..

I just bought a 2013 Ford Certified F150 a little over 2 months ago. I have already had the dealership replace the timing chain, tensioners, and phasers - Twice. First kit had a few 'defective' parts. After the second kit was installed, they then replaced my instrumentation cluster because it was sending incorrect info to the vehicles computer. In total, my truck has been at the dealership getting repaired for 31 of the 72 days I've owned it.

For what it's worth -
I had a nasty rattle at startup which led to the first replacement. The second replacement happened when I noticed the motor was making a 'Dieseling' sound.

They charged you $100.to listen to your truck for less than 30 seconds everytime they started it? You got robbed.

TDB Numbers

Hi, I have a 2011 F-150 with the Ecoboost engine and have complained to my deal since 2014 about this noise issue with them not being able to diagnose it. If fact, they even replaced the starter at one point free of charge which now I'm thinking was just to get me out of their hair. At the time it was still under warranty, however this past week the check engine light came on which ID the stretched timing chain which now will set me back $3k. Since then I have been doing research on the issue and here are the TSB number I have found to date. I'm still working on getting copies of them all.

14-0194
15-0044
15-0131
16-0027
17-0026

You can imagine my words when I discovered there has been 5 TSB on this issue. I have a meeting with the dealer tomorrow to have a long hard take with them about their lack of competence of this issue and to review all the related TSBs to ensure all the needed work is done. Three years and the truck's ECM is the one that figures it out.

Does anyone know if any legal action is in process against Ford on this issue? It reminds me a lot of their head gasket issue with their Windstars in the mid-90s which resulted in lawsuits and in the end a recall (and eventually the killing of the product line due to its poor reputation). It seam to me that Ford has had knowledge of this issue since at lease 2013 and even continued to sell 2014 and 2015 model with the known design defect and the ramifications to their customers. I have started detail documentation on my case and plan on starting with our state attorney generals office later this week to see if I can get them engaged on the issue.

Thanks

Took my truck it about 6 months ago because it was running a little rough and specifically asked about the timing chain and the TSB's. Truck was still under warranty and was told no issue with the timing chain and they replaced a coil. A few weeks ago started getting the "rattle" on startup and took it in this week. Told the timing chain needs to be replaced for $3k. Told the dealer where he could stick it and I'll pick my truck up tomorrow, don't touch it anymore, as they are obviously incompetent. I am pretty much screwed aren't I?

#680 ·
I take it that it is no longer under warranty? Yup, your screwed. If you had a great relationship with your dealer and you could verify that this is the reason you took it in 6 months ago they may make things a bit less painful. I'm assuming that since you've told them to stick it, you're past that point. ;)

And it's not the timing chain that is the main component it's the phasers that lead the chain to fail.

Just checking in. I've got a 2011, bought just out of warranty, rattle started at 65,000 miles in October of 2015. I've gone 2 years and 30,000 miles with the rattle. I tried different oils, filters, no difference. There are only three things that have an effect on whether or not it rattles: 1) how long you park it 2) what the temperature outside is and 3) how long you crank it over. I've gotten pretty good at knowing how long to crank it. 10-12 seconds does it in most situations, but if it sits more than a few days in the summer it takes up to 15-20 seconds. I'm coming into non-rattle season here in Minnesota, the colder the better.

I've had my cams checked once, they were .5 degrees out of spec. Mileage is still great, just got 570 miles on a tank which was about 21 mpg. Power is great. No plans to do anything right now. I put in a magnetic drain plug last oil change to check for debris in the oil, we'll see in 1500 miles if I have any metal in my oil. Thanks to all you guys for all the information. Two years ago when I read this thread it seemed like Ford didn't have things figured out on how to fix it, and that still seems to be the situation. So I'll wait.

Timing chain issue

I have a 2012 F-150 with the 3.5 eco. I've had this issue at 50,000 miles and again at 97,000 miles and now at 148,000 mile the issue is back. The first issue at 50,000 they changed the timing chain and at 97,000 they changed the cam phasers and chain. I haven't taken it to the dealership yet but it has the same issues. Is there a fix for this issue?

Yep put an engine built after 2015 in it..

What are the problems you're having other than the rattle?

So I got my truck back after 3 weeks and $2600 later with a new timing chain. I looked at the invoice to check what oil the dealer used and it says 5w-20. I've been having this dealer service my car for the last 50k miles. Unfortunately I just never knew I needed to double check the dealer on what oil to use. If they've been using this oil all along is my engine likely in trouble? I'll be calling the service manager on Monday.

I recommend changing to a 5w30 if your motors stock. However, depending on your OCI's, running a 5w20 will not hurt anything. When the ecoboost first hit the market ford spec'd 5W20, then later changed the spec to a 5W30 due to fuel dilution issues from their 10,000 mile OCI recommendation. We use a 5W40-5W50 oil on the 3.5l ecoboost motors we setup a little differently. The oil we recommend is heavily dependent on how your variable cam timing looks on the intake cams. ?

Ford did some nice changes to the 2017+ "mega" cam caps ( as they call them) located at the front of the cylinder head and controls the oil flow to VCT solenoids and houses the solenoids. The internal oil galleys are shorter and larger, allowing higher flow of oil to the solenoids. This is my opinion anyway

2017 3.5 litre Eco-boost. I mean I really own it! I am so glad to finally be on this forum. I mean I wake up with an erection in the middle of the night and wake up to look at my truck.

Has anyone had a chance to have sez with their truck yet? I came in my tailpipe the other night.

But, I'm having some trouble lately I think my truck has been cheating one me.

I caught my neighbor exposing his penis to my trucks cameras the other night.

Since then I have been very depressed.
