Ok so some may know about this some may not but it is something that is coming on strong with many showings at dealerships across America. So as most know it is timing chains that are prematurely stretching causing this startup noise. The news is that there is updated parts out there to address this and Ford now has a TSB on this issue formally admitting to it being a common problem. I go over it all in this video. There is also a link to just how it sounds in the description of the video on youtube. Hopefully more dealers will be willing to dive into the engine with some guidance from Ford now.

I've recently heard the chain rattle every several days, though only for maybe a second. I'm experiencing other issues at the moment. I've read several pages back in this thread but have not come across what this issue does to your truck other than sound horrible on start up. What would be the long term problem if not fixed, etc.?

My other problem at the moment is from miss fires and now truck idles rough and slightly shudders at high speeds. I should add that I experienced the CAC and spark plug issue at 66K miles. That was addressed and fixed. The miss fires happened again around 117K and plugs were replaced again, but truck is not the same as it was after the first round. I recall the cats being replaced that time, but not this time. Sorry to get off subject!

If you replaced the plugs and still getting misfires time to start looking at the coils them selves.

As for the Noise, it could possibly lead to total timing chain failure due to the added stress on it.

Picked my truck up from Veterans Ford in Tampa, after having the startup rattle and timing chain stretch to the point of it being 6 degrees out and truck in limp mode, I was very clear on what was wrong, printed out the tsb 15-1031 and gave copy to service writer, mechanic and left a copy on seat, 4 days later they had truck done.......

they did not do the tsb 15-1031, they did an old one, that does not replace cam phasers, First day of cold start rattle is louder than ever..... WTF

Well happy fugin holiday's to me! My phaser rattle is coming back, and I think a rod bearing is possible going. Hear a rapping noise when applying throttle from an idle when engine is warmed. I've got to say even if the dealer looks after this [no warranty left] this will be it for me- I am done with Ford and the Ecoboost!

I waited almost 3 weeks for parts, but they told me no issues driving it in the mean time so you should have your truck until those parts come in. It isn't going to hurt anything.

I am at the point now where Im getting close to setting up an appointment at the dealership and just wanted to see if anyone has some advise on what I should say or bring to help the situation. I have been recording cold morning start ups and have 5 or 6 good videos where you can hear the rattle very clear but from what I have read the dealership needs to have the truck to try and recreate the noise.

Be ready to leave the truck for a week. Tell them not to touch it for a day or two that includes not moving it around etc. So it has time to cold soak. Tell them to keep it until they hear it because you have your proof that it does it.

Took the truck in last week and they were able to confirm the noise the next day and said they will be replacing the phasers and the chain but the parts are on back order and should be 6-8 weeks. I was also surprised when the service guy started telling me there was another TSB update for the CAC but it would be $80 so I asked him what the fix was and he told me basically they would be adding another shield to the top and update to the latest tune. I declined but thinking about it now I may have them do it because they want $119 just to update the PCM or I can have them do the TSB and just rip the shield off when I get home and save 30 buck lol.

Let's see if your regional customer service manager can assist with getting those parts a little faster, matt60. PM me your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, current mileage, and servicing dealership; I'll get this into their hands.

Veterans Ford in tampa, has had my truck now for 5 days (first time 4 days) to get this repaired, this is suppose to be an 9 hour job, my confidence is not so good on there ability!!!
Hi PirateCustoms,

Have you reached out to your CSM so they can assist? If you're having difficulty getting in touch, send a PM my way; I'll be happy to help.

Crystal

The Dealer has had mine since the 29th of Dec. Had to have a new crankshaft put in. After the "first time" it was fixed the crankshaft key was bad and subsequently now, which is the 3rd time it has been in for this, the crankshaft was no longer in spec and had to be replaced.

you guys have to realize just because its a 9 hour job thats taking days means the parts arent in. Phasers have been on backorder for months and unless you get a ticket made and ordered you wont be seeing them. I work in parts and they have been on backorder for a while. Its not your dealerships fault like everyone seems to think its fords. and they are working on it. I am waiting for mine currently since jan 21st. and its still not in. And i wouldnt leave my truck at ford for a week either because you dont need a technician to verify the problem. it says right on the tsb that if the customer states that it rattles to fix it. and is also part of emission warranty up till like 80k i believe. People need to chill out. 80k miles is alot. and if they fix your vehicle for free then i see no reason to complain. But i will say that weve probably done this tsb less than a hand full of times. So no its not a BIG deal but we are an extremely busy ford dealer and i havent seen it hardly at all.

Has to be some what of a big deal for the parts to be on back order again, that means there as been a lot of these trucks getting fixed and I was at dealer the other day and a 2015 f150 is in there with this issue

I was told there was no reason not to drive my truck while we waited the two weeks on parts to come in. Hell I was driving it for half a year with the noise what's another couple weeks. No need for a loaner or rental.

When you did fix it, was it on your terms? or did it leave you stranded? Mine just started within the last month, so I am reading trying to find how much time I have on my hands before it goes out.

im not trying to seem mad lol. just saying I spend 45k on my truck too but its also not Ford only that manufactures these parts and the packagers can be the biggest problem. f150 hasnt had my back order parts but the superdutys had a ton of them. to the point that people were suing ford over them. but they will give you a rental if needed. seen some people in brand new expedition ecos for like 3 months lol. their is 1600 on next months forecast. so 1600 out of f150s expeditions taurus exlorer edge etc. which there are probably millions by now roaming the streets 1600 isnt too bad. its the packager whos been making us wait for them.

I had major issues with a dealer about this and corporate put me up in a new 2015 f150 crew cab 4wd and more,I was taken care of after my bad issue with a local dealer running me around and telling me to take my truck and leave he isn't going to fix it and don't bring it back, just hope that service manager doesn't have a job anymore for the way I was treated

yeah some dealers can be real assholes and im not relly sure why. i believe they have like a warranty quota or percentage to do and if its bad they try and shrug off warranty work. and if they are good they can do it, i asked a service writer why would some dealers do it and he said because they dont get paid enough off warranty to want to take their time to write them up and fill out all the paper work and i said thats the dumbest thing ever. he asked why and i said because i didnt spend 45 thousand dollars on a truck that has a warranty to be told no because the service writers are too lazy to write the ticket on it. so i believe some of the dealers who shoo people away either do way to much warranty work due to crappy technician work. or the service writers are so lazy they dont want to make a ticket on it because it doesnt make them enough money. Either way the tsb is gonna be covered for ANYONE under emission warranty mileage...i believe like 80k mi.

The dealer has been great thru the process, but Ford keeps pushing back and back when the parts are going to get in.
This has now been out of service for the same issue more than 30 business days, so now it qualifies for the Minnesota lemon law. Which I am considering.
