Ok so some may know about this some may not but it is something that is coming on strong with many showings at dealerships across America. So as most know it is timing chains that are prematurely stretching causing this startup noise. The news is that there is updated parts out there to address this and Ford now has a TSB on this issue formally admitting to it being a common problem. I go over it all in this video. There is also a link to just how it sounds in the description of the video on youtube. Hopefully more dealers will be willing to dive into the engine with some guidance from Ford now.

I've got a 2011 ecoboost and it has been rattling on cold startups since it was 3 months old. I've been brushed off by the dealer since day one with all sorts of excuses as to why it makes the noise. Due to a TSB last week I got a vacuum pump installed for free that might solve it. We'll see but I am not very optimistic about it.

Honestly I love my KR and it was a dream to be able to get it. But along with being my first Ford truck, it will be my last. I feel cheated and duped by all the mileage and performance hype.

I just wish I had a repair option other than the dealer. Really tired of going in for an oil change and being told the world will end tomorrow if I don't spend another $2K on snake oil services.

Dude, I have been reading the threads and catching up on all the discussions that I missed over the weekend. What has caught my attention is three different threads that you have posted on in regards to the service department that use for your truck. I'd love for you to take my (and others have mentioned also) advice and DO NOT TAKE YOUR TRUCK TO THAT HELL-HOLE ONE MORE TIME!!! It infuriates me that they have taken advantage of you, sold you unneeded services, and blown you off on this timing chain issue. Their doors are not open to provide outstanding service. They are only open to make as much money as possible at the customers expense.
Find another service department that will take care of the truck the way you would, if you could. They exist, I promise. ;)

They released a TSB and are doing the repairs under warranty.

Plbgbiz this same scenario happened to me with less than 30,000 on my 2013 sent me home gave me the impression to wait til something goes wrong. I have videos of the terrible rattle . Sad to say I now have 36,500 and still have the rattle and a warning light on the dash truck won't shift correctly made an appointment with my dealer . Wished they would have addressed my problem while under warranty !

The good news is, if this really is the timing chain rattle (most likely is) then you are still covered under the Ford power train warranty 5yr/60,000. :)

Just seeing of there has been any movement getting this covered under 80K Emissions? Rattle happened 2-3 times before 60K, then went away for a while(?) Took truck to dealer and they couldn't replicate, so nothing was done. I'm now at 76K and it's happening at all cold startups. Might be due to cold weather too, but who knows.

Maybe good that I took in before 60K and now have same complaint? Any strategy aside walking in with your lawyer? :)

Thanks.

Wish I found all this info sooner. Just bought a used 2012 F-150 ecoboost. Dealer held it for a few days before I could test drive it to "fix" some issues. They said it just needed a tune up before they sold it. Yesterday I ordered a bunch of aftermarket parts ($3400 USD) and this morning had the cold start up chatter. Checked the oil and it is overfilled and smells heavy like fuel. 114K miles and a ton of issues. Not happy I just sold my perfectly good running (at 168K miles) Nissan Frontier for this pile of crap. First and last Ford I will own.

It stinks about all your issues, but it seems a smidge unfair to write off Ford, because the majority of the issues on the truck you bought, could stem from possibly not being properly maintained by the previous owner/s. There is a very good reason that Ford Trucks are the best selling vehicle for 30+ years.
Anyway....best of luck to you and hopefully all will get corrected by your dealership. Keep us in the loop of what transpires. :)

If you just bought the truck you should Atleast a 2000 mile warranty take it back, and when buying a truck with over 100k do your home work, sorry you have this issue but it can be fixed in 2 days tops just take it back, call ford corporate and tell them you aren't happy and want something done about it,I had a dealer refuse to fix mine called corporate and got truck fixed new loaner truck and mine down payment back, but my truck had 37k miles, when motor was pulled down it was very clean inside.this issue is a cam phaser problem just like the old 5.4 motor

X2 on the Cam Phaser's - I had mine in multiple times for the rattle, to the point I was going to give up. FINALLY I was able to get a different dealership to dig in further and look at all the repair records. They noticed the one thing that hadn't been done yet was the phaser's, even though I had told the other dealership even handed them a copy of the TSB. The new dealer changed them and a timing chain again, and the problem is finally gone!! This just proved to me that there are still a few good dealers!! One thing to note I had Ford customer support in Dearborn tell me that dealers don't have to do the full TSB and that they are just a recommendation.. When I explained that my truck was still broken they didn't care... One thing I did learn through all of this is that it really just depends on who you talk to and what kind of mood their in....

Crystal, can you verify that this TSB 15-0131 should be implemented under the Emissions Warranty (8/80k)? I have the noise and the Ford service dept heard it, but say that it is not covered under the 80k emissions warranty, though it states that on the TSB.

#98 ·
It def states on the TSB it is covered under Emissions warranty.
Look under Warranty status near bottom of page. Here's a copy.

Thanks for the copy. Yes, I see that and you see that, but for some reason my service advisor is interpreting that differently. I haven't seen on here, though, that anyone has had this covered who is over 60k and under 80k miles. Hopefully, Crystal will see this and chime in with a definitive answer. I just bought my truck from a Toyota dealer and I'm first fighting with their warranty company because I think this should be covered under their 30 day/1000 mile warranty. I don't have a CEL, so the Toyota dealer's extended warranty company (Fidelity) denied the claim. My second recourse is to have the Ford dealership cover it under the Emissions Warranty.

My truck has 92k couple days ago I started it up and herd the timing chain rattle. I've purchased the cam holding tools and all the parts once they come in I'll tear it apart and replace the chain. I've always used synthetic oil never gone past 4k mile oil change interval. and I have a RX catch can that pulls a ton of water/fuel mixture out. Pretty disappointing that I have to do this on a truck with under 100k miles.

#107 ·
That sucks. Sorry to hear that.
The chain and the phasers are partners in crime that lead to the chain stretch issue. If you're going to do the work yourself, then you might as well replace the cam phasers while it's all torn apart.

I truly don't know. Hopefully someone else chimes in with the part number and price. I want to say that someone mentioned that the phasers weren't too costly.

looks like each one is around $115 there are 4 2 different part numbers one for intake and one for exhaust. I would prefer not to replace parts that are not broken I wonder if there is a way to test them. so far I've got about $400 in parts adding these would double the repair bill. I'm looking at only keeping the truck for another year or until the new Raptor comes out. :)

#111 ·
Thought - what about trading it in right now? Get something on lease until you know what you want. In your case, it could be worse.... at least you didn't lose the whole engine like I did! If you were waiting to get into another ecoboost (you stated new Raptor), what makes you want another ecoboost after the problems you have already had?

#113 ·
You may want to just trade it then and avoid the cost and frustration of fixing it.
Glad you are happy with the eco. In my case, my blown engine and research scared me into another choice.

thanks for your comment but I will be keeping it for the near future. 8-10 hours of work is not something that I'm afraid of just have to get the motor back in the car in my garage so I can work on my truck now. Now if I could be getting paid what the dealer charges to do this job I'd be jumping for joy.

Can you post the parts for holding the cams and removing the pulleys etc. Be nice to know.
