Ford F150 3.5L Ecoboost Rattle Upon Start Up- Timing Chain Stretch Issues TSB

Ok so some may know about this some may not but it is something that is coming on strong with many showings at dealerships across America. So as most know it is timing chains that are prematurely stretching causing this startup noise. The news is that there is updated parts out there to address this and Ford now has a TSB on this issue formally admitting to it being a common problem. I go over it all in this video. There is also a link to just how it sounds in the description of the video on youtube. Hopefully more dealers will be willing to dive into the engine with some guidance from Ford now.

You need a 3 jaw puller for the Harmonic balancer. I had one of those before so I didn't need to buy one. the Manual calls for these cam holding plates to hold the cams at TDC when you remove the Chain. There is a ford part but it's $230 I found this one for cheaper. 303-1248 Camshaft Holding Tool Set I'm still trying to decide if I want to replace the Phasers I haven't read why they should be replaced. my truck hasn't made the start up sound since I bought all the parts too lol typical right.

Thanks. I think they change them because as others have said who have torn down the top end that the cam oil passage screens are full of casting debris and are usually plugged up which has lead to oil loss anf failure of the phasers. The rattling is not the chain. The rattling is the phasers. The worn phasers lead to a worn chain not the other way around.

You haven't answered any question you just kept posting that I should trade it in saying that I've had a lot of problems. I work on cars every day you will not find a perfect car I don't care what you buy 90% of the time you are just buying someone else's problems and that goes for new vehicles also that's why there are TSB's.

Took my truck in last Monday to have the phasers and chain done, dealership said it would be done Wednesday but when I called Wednesday they said they were going to replace the the chain tensioners as well because they had visible wear on them. They had to order the parts so it ended up being Monday before it was done but they provided me with a rental because it was under warranty. This is the first time I have heard of them replacing the tensioners...has anyone else had this done? Also, my wife had to pick it up so when I got home I took a look under the hood and found 2 vacuum hoses not connected which is kind of frustrating but what can you do.

Interesting I would have asked for the parts to see the wear unless they are saying that the guides had wear then again I would ask to see the parts. I'm still waiting on 2 phasers to come in then I'll tear mine down even though it hasn't made the sound in 2 weeks.

I dropped off my 2013 F150 Ecoboost at the dealer nine days ago for this issue. Truck has 58,000 mi on it, so still within the power train warranty. They called me this morning and said that they had changed the oil and could not find a problem (no noise at startup.) A miracle!!! I have been hearing the startup sound every morning for the past few weeks and actually recorded it on my phone. The dealer has done all maintenance on the truck since I bought there, and I have had all work done within their schedule. What are my options at this point?

Tell them to keep it til they hear it.

If it does it every morning, park it at the dealer the night before. Keep the keys with you until the next day so you can show the service advisor and tech what it sounds like.

Well then drive it. You only have 2k miles left on warranty. Dont go over or they will wash their hands of it.

I'm at 53k on my 2011. As much I I dont want to deal with this, I hope something happens in the next 6k miles before I hit 60k. Otherwise I hope Ford steps up, but being an issue this long doesnt sound like they will.

For your sake, I hope it did solve the issue, but forgive me for being skeptical. :(
I would video your start-up EVERY morning from now on. If it doesn't do it then you can delete the video and start again the next day. But at least you could arm yourself with time stamped video if it does occur again.

No, that was the regional Customer Service rep after I escalated my complaint to corporate. She basically went "soup nazi" on me and closed the case. I have tried to be professional and address the issue. Too bad it has fallen on deaf ears. Volume trumps service and integrity again. Sad world we live in. I picked up my truck this morning and the sound was still there, although since it is in the 70s outside, it wasn't as horrible as it has been. Strangely, the service tech did not hear it... I like my truck, other than this problem. Shame that it seems I will have to consider this before I make my next purchase. I am sure Ford will be ok without me though.

unfortunately I heard the rattle 2 more times in a month long road trip we just returned from. that makes 4 times in the last year. doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when though. both overnight rests before starting but not the coldest nights at all. still haven't taken it to the dealer because 4 starts out of 10 months, there is no way they'll be able to reproduce on demand :/

I realize this an an old post but I'm working my way through it. I have 2 Blackstone reports from my engine from 2 of the 3 oil changes since I've owned it. I can PM you or anybody their results and comments, or post here if wanted.

I haven't gotten analysis done but 1 of my rattles on start happened just 2 days after a fresh oil change (Mobil 1) so it seems unlikely that it's related to fuel in oil viscosity ratings, etc. I'm not even convinced there is a temperature correlation anymore, just something about the cam position on shutdown?

I think it's due to a weak timing design as the chain has extra wear on it due to driving the hpfp. Most show large amounts of casting debris clogging the phaser oil screens etc. I do also think it's due to oil bleed down as well.

happened twice now in the last 4 days.... took ~11 months and only heard it 4 times but it seems to be getting much more frequent now. i was hoping i wouldn't have to have it addressed ever but its looking much more likely now if its going to start happening often. at least the dealer will be able to reproduce it easily

I sure hope so, for your sake. That's what I thought about mine too. It happens "approximately" 100% of the time now at the first startup of the day. The dealership's magic oil change has not helped whatsoever. I have made recordings of the sound each of the past three mornings though.

With my dealership & service advisor, I was having some overheating issues with my Boost pulling my 8k Springdale in 100+° up 6-7% grade AZ weather.
Had it in to them like 5 times last summer.....they couldn't figure it out. Sooo, I pulled my TT right to the dealership service area-lol and parked it there, until they went through the truck!
She's running great now...so we shall see how she does this season.
Keep after them OP!

I joined here today because of this forum. Well looks like we can add mine to the growing list. I have a 2012 with 78000 miles. This started a bit a few months back but now is daily. I only started to research the noise yesterday and came across a lot of others on the web forums. Dropped it off at the dealer tonight. The guy made it sound like this is something new or never heard of. Hmmm. I had the 75000 mile extended warranty so this better be cover by Ford under the emissions warranty or just good business. Waiting to hear what they find tomorrow. Not a happy guy after all the boasting when it came out and paying more for it.
