Just did mine and had to do a lot of guessing, sleuth work on the forums, and digging on Ford's page to figure it out.
I have a 2012 XLT with the basic system - apparently this means pre SYNC 2 - which means the directions Ford gives on the VIN look-up page are wildly inaccurate and I'm just surprised they don't have it better spelled out. The instructions you actually need are located here.
  • NOTE: For this version of the SYNC system your USB device needs to be formatted to FAT32 not exFAT! (you will get an error asking you to make sure the install file is in the root directory)

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Take the USB drive with the software updates to your vehicle. Turn on your vehicle, and then turn on the radio.
Make sure your vehicle is in a well-ventilated area. Your vehicle will need to be turned on, with the engine running between ten and thirty five minutes. Make sure that your vehicle is not in Accessory mode.
  2. Turn off Bluetooth on your phone if it is in the vehicle.
  3. Plug the USB drive in to your vehicle’s USB port. Make sure it is completely plugged into the port.
  4. Press the Phone button in the vehicle.
  5. Scroll to Return.
  6. Press OK.
  7. Scroll to Advanced.
  8. Press OK.
  9. Scroll to Install Application.
  10. Press OK.
  11. SYNC automatically detects the files on your USB drive and then displays “Install Application?” Press OK to confirm.
  12. SYNC displays “Installing Application” during the process. Do not remove your USB drive or turn off your vehicle while this update is in progress. Shortly after installation has begun, SYNC says “Your download is in progress and the system may reboot several times during the update. Please wait up to 10 min until you hear your SYNC system update was completed. You may then use SYNC.” Ignore this message. It refers to a specific phase of the installation, not the overall update process. While the update is loading, SYNC will not recognize your mobile phone or media device.
  13. In another approximately 10 minutes (timing may vary per update), SYNC says “Installation Complete.” SYNC may also say, “Your SYNC system update is complete. The system will now reboot. Please wait a few moments before trying to use the system.” The system then reboots, which takes several minutes. Do not attempt to use SYNC during this time.
  14. SYNC displays “Installation Complete.” Press MENU to exit installation mode.
It is now safe to remove your USB drive.
  15. Once you have installed the SYNC software updates, you’ll need to pair your phone again. To complete the process, take the USB drive to your computer to report the successful installation.

Hope this save someone else a little time and frustration.

If your selection is "Yes, but one or more steps needed additional clarification", please let us know which step needed additional clarification, provide that clarification and help the next guy avoid that same confusion.
If your selection is "No", please let us know in what ways this tutorial didn't apply to you and maybe another solution can be found for others with your same variables.
Thanks!

Too bad sync 1 with Hands Free Nav cannot be upgraded. Otherwise I would do that in a heartbeat.

If anything a majority of the stuff out there is a downgrade.
Technically that's MFT not Sync. Ford was stupid calling it that because sync 1 is definitely upgradable

I think it’s actually called “Sync with Voice Activated Navigation”. Which is for the 11-12s.

MFT is technically Sync 2 which is found in 13-14 F150s. View attachment 171632
All I know is I want apple CarPlay :ROFLMAO:

All I know is I have that crappy radio too and still cry that the only people that make a screen for it are in China. Why Ford ever thought to put the AC controls only in the software is beyond me

Can you walk a non computer guy through how to download to the USB?

I have tried over and over. I format the usb for FAT32. Done.
The file is compressed. Now I try to follow the instructions and, uncompressed?? Not sure I understand this part.
take it to the truck and can’t read the usb.
New usb. Big memory. USB port does work when phone is plugged in.
Thanks for any help.

if you’re using a windows computer right click on the downloaded compressed folder and choose unzip or uncompress and choose the location of the USB. Should move it all to the usb and then plug it into the truck

You’re in luck because you can easily throw in sync 2 or 3. I’m quite jealous. Big thing would be finding a bezel for it.
Junkyard ? Is it plug and play for sync 3 ?

I remember a years ago trying to update sync and it kept failing because my USB was too large. Apparently it’s very picky on size.

I don't understand how any one deals w/ the 15 steps when each one has the potential for errors, reroutes, questions, reboots, lock ups, fails, or any number of glitch combinations. I’ll never become a programer as I‘m a wrencher. Wrenchers don't need a tool to fix the tool to fix the problem that may or may not be the issue. This was a rant orchestrated by years if computer frustration. Gotta go change the points on my 55 now.

Sync 2. Only 11-12 got the crappy Sony nav garbage and it was for the premium sound package and Nav. So if you don't have that then you have normal sync and can upgrade to 3
