I'm a little bit disappointed here. We've always done a decent job around here at discussing sensitive topics in a mature and respectful way.

That hasn't happened here in the last few posts. We've cleaned it up. I've always wanted this forum to run without any hyper moderation, we did well enough with no mods for a while.

Please let us keep it that way. I've unlocked the thread for now.

Yea, but you gotta admit it took a while before emotions finally flared.

The old saying of "never discuss politics and religion" has to be altered now. It might be "never discus politics or religion or coronavirus". Lol

It finally turned into one of those "if you believe that then you are xxxx" (xxx = insulting term)

Still, I'm impressed how long it took.

"... regarding that the video I linked to was hogwash and that I should find an "unbiased" source.

...
I never said it was hogwash. That was someone else.

Point is, I take any and all information I get from the Internet with a grain of salt and often skepticism (depending how outrageous the claim). Only when I find other sources confirming the information, do I begin to give it any credence.

Sorry if my response was confusing.

I know it wasn't you.

Problem with the Internet (and email), few of us are professional writers. So sometimes what is typed or written may be taken in multiple ways. Many times these alternate interpretations are unintended (and sometimes completely intended).

At the Office, I am inundated with tons of emails (most legit - some scams). And I find people wanting to engage in LONG "back & forth" email responses, sometimes wasting hours ... when a quick 5-10 minute phone call will often resolve the whole problem. And with a lot less pain, or emotion.

Ditto with texting. In fact worse. I have fat fingers and constantly hitting 5 keys with a single stroke. AND, don't get me going on "auto-correct". Auto-correct and I are constantly fighting each other.

I thought I was the only who fought with autocorrect!

Alright, back to the regularly scheduled Coronavirus discussion.

Yes, it is still affecting me. No I do not believe the 'information' I see online unless it has been verified by at least three sources (hazmat rule). Yes, I personally believe that our response as a country, state (California), county, city has been far from what it should have been/should be. But for now, I will continue with my life and help educate my kids while I work from home.

I was the one who called it garbage. I didn't personally attack anyone for it, I simply asked, "How can you listen to this?" It was more of a curiosity. I have purposely tried to avoid politics in this thread, it was others who injected some politics into this thread and promoted it. There were also a few members who turned it into personal attacks. I have no problems if those are your views, we're all entitled to them, but just because others here may feel the same way, doesn't mean it's acceptable per forum rules. If I were to post some extreme left video promoting socialism, I would have been scolded for it. Just asking for a little fairness is all - putting political material into a thread is not allowed per forum rules regardless of where it comes from.

I think it's clear we all come from very different walks of life and as a scientist who believes strongly in diversity, I think that's a good thing. Times are tough for a lot of folks, and as much as this forum is a place to "get away" from some of that, this thread really isn't. It's just a reminder of what's happening outside and is far different than other threads on the board. (It's always the "off-topic" sections that drive moderators crazy.) I think we can be civil about the discussion, we all want the same thing - for things to get back to normal. We just disagree on how we got where we are and how we get out of it.

I hope I haven't offended anyone and I appreciate each and every one of you for being there to listen in times when I have needed it. I'll go back to my corner now.

Dan, you should NEVER worry about offending me. That's for sure.

First, because I have watched you contribute and help enough folks around here that my mind was already made up about you long before this crazy stuff arrived to twist the world in knots. Lol

And secondly, because my world view(s) have raised eyebrows for most of my 62 years. My own kids warn others before they introduce them to me.

It's all good. And I quite enjoy a harmless banter.

My problem is none of the scientists can even agree on any one couyse of action. So how can they be the ones that decide what we are allowed to do. In Canada we have cheif medical officers federally, provincially, and municaplly.

These doctors have complete control under emergency order act and they are basing their decisions purely on "opinion" no where have facts been stated. Only opinion.

At least in the US you have a constitutional right to throw all the garbage back at legislators.

That's why I was saying, the real answer is "they don't know". They are all just giving their educated opinion. I think scientists feel they have to put on this facade for the policymakers otherwise "all hell breaks loose" socially and people start looting in the streets. As much as this is a public health problem, it's also a huge effort in managing our society and culture through this so we don't start killing each other. This is the type of thing that can overthrow governments, end civilizations, etc. not so much because of the pathogen, but because of the war over resources, treatments, etc.

I believe you live in Eastern Canada, if I recall correctly. Aren't they even blocking Inter-Provincial travel to only essential travel back there?

Frankly, if I lived next door to Quebec, I don't know if I would want anyone Quebec visiting my area at this time. (Any other time, no problem. Come on in! I always like to try and speak a little French. Emphasis on the word little/petite).

In my area it's almost a ghost town. None of the malls are open. None of the Recreation Centers. None of the gyms. None of the bars or clubs. And most stores are closed. Hell even the Cannabis Shop across from the University is closed because there are no students going to classes. Everything is now online.

I do enjoy the light traffic though. That's a bonus.

Heck, you are still a youngster.

I won't get into my age, but let's just say I was already in school and remember vividly the day JFK was shot. We all got sent home early that day.

Around here(Utah) the government is starting to "relax" restrictions. The state has been in the "orange" phase of the Covid plan since late april/early May and we are supposed to move to "yellow" on Saturday. A few counties are going to remain in orange due to slightly higher case rates. Summit county where I live is one of them and was due to the initial spike from all the skiers visiting early on.

Yellow phase will consist of:
-Gatherings up to 50 people
-Pools will open
-Team sports are allowed
-All businesses can operate
-Social distancing remains in effect
-A bunch of other eased restrictions

When we went to orange, apparently some people felt that meant all restrictions were off because I had a few encounters where people did not practice social distancing at all. I went to pick up food from a local restaurant and, while ordering, some lady just walked right in behind me and stood about a foot away staring at the menu. In the process of doing that, she had cut the line of people that were standing just outside, 6' apart, waiting for me to order and exit.

I'd say we've fared pretty well here. 6749 cases as of today and the per day case rate is definitely flat. I don't know if that is an anomaly because Salt Lake City is so far removed from other major cities(pretty much 6-7 hours drive to get anywhere) or what. Our population is pretty centralized in the Salt Lake Valley. Something like 2.8 of the 3.2 million people live in one 75 mile x 7 mile valley.

Oh, also, our daycare has been open since May 1st. I don't know if they were even closed a full month but we have been paying a retaining fee. We haven't sent our son back yet since we both are working from home and my wife's CEO said they would continue to keep the work from home policy for as long as people didn't feel comfortable going back into the office.

We are debating sending him back in June. We are fairly certain we already had the COVID in February. My wife went into the local clinic with troubles breathing and dry cough and the same clinic is now doing anti-body trials. She is trying to get set up with a test since she has the records there show she had the exact symptoms of Covid-19.

If she had it then I am positive my son and I also had it. I got a milder case of whatever she had.

Nothing like having your brain tickled, is there? Or did you do a blood/antigen test?
Brain tickler LOL Felt like it was behind my eyeball. Didn't hurt. More like a very intense tickle. Up the nose and all the way to the throat, wiggle it around, let it sit 30 seconds, pull it out. Not bad at all. I figger most of us will be positive asymptomatic. Send us all home for 2 weeks, shut down the company, retest, who knows LOL It's all a big chinese joke
