I’m sorry to revive an old thread but did the check valve really solve the rattling noise guys were experiencing? I’ve experienced what sounds like the exact same noise in my 2017 F150 3.5 EB truck. I have had it looked at by Ford but they weren’t able to diagnose what was causing the noise since it was intermittent and only happens once and a while then goes away, and couldn't be replicated.

This truck only has 7,057 miles.

I also found this TSB today:

And just today my check engine light just came on, was wondering if by chance they could be related.

Scheduled an appt with Ford just want to be prepared when I go in.

The above fix for sure resolved the problem and it never came back. Why did it happen a couple times?....I don’t know.

I put on another 800 miles towing a trailer since the last update. All is good after the check valve update.

Mine was rattling for a while couldn’t figure it out. Replaced my check valve today and rattling stopped. Thanks for sharing, you da man!

The 2021 F150, after these many years of vacuum related IWE issues, finally switched from vacuum to a stepper motor to engage/disengage the IWE.

Of course the stepper motor has to prove itself reliable, and that will take some history. But for those if us that scratched our heads because the problem was ignored for several truck generations, well Ford did something. Finally.

And I'm assuming since it is now electronic, a malfunction will absolutely trigger a code or alert. At least diagnostically it will be easier to verify?

Curious to hear thoughts from the 4x4 experts on this... I just had TSB 20-2307 (attached) done on my 2019 KR..basically capping off the vacuum system. I can really feel the "drag" now with the IWE's engaged full time and the CV's spinning full time. I recall the Ford Tech saying the transfer case would NOT engage until you turn your dial to 4x4 though..but I'm not sure....seems I'm reading different things.

My main concern is wear and tear on the CV's/boots etc, road noise, as well as the mileage reduction.. Still testing out, but would love to hear any thoughts on this..

Wow, I was totally unaware that Ford officially supported the "poor man's IWE delete" procedure.

If you remove vacuum from the IWE and still can feel and hear something that isn't right, then either the IWE/Hub was damaged or you have an issue with the CV or front diff.

The transfer case shouldn't be involved if you are in 2WD. At least that's how I understand it.

I’m traveling for work today and about 30 minutes ago this sound just popped up out of nowhere. I was traveling on a 65 mile an hour highway with the cruise control set at 70 and the sound did not slowly come on it was instant.

Sounds like an exhaust rattle and hopefully not the catalytic converters. From inside the truck I can hear the sound coming from the left and right side. Just as the noise starts to happen I will hear it come on one side of the truck before the other and when they go away is the same thing they don’t both go quiet at the same time. There’s only a half a second or so between the two noises starting and stopping and both noises sound exactly the same just one on the left and one on the right.

What app are you using to monitor the engine parameters and how does it connect? Thanks.

Hi,
Did the vacuum check valves or the NHTSA Turbocharger wastewater linkage correct you noise? I too am suddenly experiencing loud noise at high speedS that might be front hubs engaging?

Bob, the dealer reset the PCM on my F150, told me to put a couple hundred miles on it and see if the sound goes away. Lo and behold, it did. I still have the cold start rattle but I can live with that for now. Before it sounded like someone was under the hood shaking a soup can full of pebbles ...

BTW, regarding the cold start rattle, I saw a Youtube video where a guy recommended holding down the accelerator while cranking the engine until the oil gauge shows pressure, and then releasing the accelerator to start the truck. Not ideal but it works.

Oh, and he got a new truck and it doesn't do the "flood start" procedure. He's bummed.
