Odd 3.5 problems

I’m fairly new here, I’ve been on other forums, but there’s a lot going on here that I need to unpack, so please bear with me. In September, I purchased a USED 2018 F-150 3.5 XLT 4x4, and it was great for about 2 weeks. My truck is still under the factory 5/60 warranty (currently 57k miles). I then developed a tick on cold start. I took it to the closest ford dealer to my house, against the advice of some folks that had bad experiences, for this issue. They called me after they’d blew off my appointment for a few days to tell me it was the phasers. They said it would be a week before they got the parts. Then 30 min later they called me back and said they’d “found the parts”. Two day job, they didn’t call until 4 days later. The issue still persisted. Also, they left my charge pipe off and my oil cooler pipes on the intercooler off. Had that rectified, and had a lot of words with the service manager, who confirmed that the “noise” I was hearing on start was the high pressure fuel injectors. The truck was fine after. The other day I was driving and my truck had a grinding noise, but only when the accelerator had ANY input. I stopped, threw it in park, hit the accelerator with my hand with the door open, and it still persisted. Got back in the truck, continued home, and when I put it in drive the noise stopped. I drove it the next day to work, and it was totally fine. That night I took a quick trip to Walmart and it happened again. Same exact issue. I can feel it grinding in the floor and the pedal. Then, 3-5 seconds later, it stopped. Drove it the day after and nothing. That day I had some time to look at it, and climbing underneath the truck I noticed I have an oil leak. It is only on the passenger side, so keep that in mind. The oil can been seen from the top of the engine bay, only on top of the frame. Underneath, it’s on the starter, suspension, cross member, turbo, oil pan, and I’m sure I’m missing a few others. I’m not sure if the shitty ford dealer I took it to the first time messed something up and I’m just now noticing the leak, or if this is a new issue. I just want my truck to be in decent working order for once. Any help on any of these issues is much appreciated.

. Sounds like the tick is your manifold OR turbo wastegate rattle.
Leak could be turbo fitting...or they just suck at reassembly.
Grinding.... iwe 🤷‍♂️

Okay so, I have no idea about these new trucks, I’ve rebuilt modifieds and old stuff, so if you could give me any tips on how to check this stuff😂the turbo wastegate, no clue what that even is. Never had a boosted vehicle. What’s the best way to check the turbo fittings? And with the IWE, would it still make the noise in park? What’s the best way to test them?
I'm not sure if you can test the turbo..

Fittings at the turbo are prone to leaking, could be a lot of other things tho... valve cover, vacuum pump leaks I guess .

No, IWE only make noise driving.
Take it back the the yoyos and have them look at it. Or take videos and show them.

If I could catch the noise when it happens. But it seems pretty random, and the last time it was super quick and it stopped. Didn’t have time to get my phone out before it quit. I just hope I don’t have a turbo going out.

Okay so I took a few quick pics. The first there you can see if you look at the intake that feeds the cold side of the turbo, it’s wet on top and has a bit of junk around the shittin clamp. The second is of the turbo from the wheel well. There’s some buildup on the cold side but you can see that oil isn’t all the way around the clamp for the intake, which almost makes me think my oil is coming from somewhere else. I didn’t have a lot of time to take the plastic cover off and check around the valve train or anywhere else.

Also, that blue flex pipe and connector above the turbo have oil. The blue pipe is only oily on top, which also says oil isn’t coming from the turbo? But I’m not sure.
Valve cover... maybe?
Or vacuum pump? That's my free advice.

I’ll check the two out tomorrow when I have more time!

I had a similar problem and after months of trial and error, changing a ton of gaskets, I found the problem.

Turbo Oil Return Pipe

Originally thought to be the Vacuum pump or Oil pump (whatever it's called) but it was bone dry after I replaced it. Yet something else kept leaking.

Look at the picture circled in Red.

The oil pump and vacuum pump are not the same. Vacuum pump is supposed to be dry. Oil pump is supposed to have oil in it.

Right. Well whatever it's called, I just know it connects directly behind the crankcase, sandwiched near the fire wall. The mechanic told me mine was leaking oil so I removed it but before I replaced it, I noticed oil leaking just close to it. So I reinstalled it and remove the Turbo Oil Return Line, and my truck worked good as new. No ticking noise nor shaking engine. It was not easy getting that out 🤦

Removed the turbo oil return line ? Man I am confused now. The leaking oil line caused the engine to tick and shake so you left it off ?

The Mechanic lifted my truck to identify the leak. He noticed that leak is coming from the general area behind the passenger crankcase. He then specified that the Vacuum pump has a loose gasket and leaking oil which needs to be replaced. Instead of paying for him to fix it, I did it myself. But when I took out the pump, oil was still dripping out but not around the pump. While searching, I found the oil leak coming from the Turbo Oil Return Pipe due to a tiny crack on its grooved side. So I reinstalled the Vacuum pump and went on to disassemble parts to get to the Turbo Oil Return Pipe to replace it. The ticking noise came from that pipe because high pressurized oil passes through the turbos and, I'm assuming, towards the oil pan. The shaking of the engine was due to the engine not having enough oil circulating because all the oil was gushing out of the return pipe.
Alright, it’s been a while, figured I’d give an update. I decided not to screw around with trying to fix or find whatever was causing it because the truck is still under warranty, and I was fairly certain that the oil leak was from the last cam phasers job anyway. So, took my truck back two tuesdays ago to have that fixed. They did note that the oil leak was from them, but also that the tech put in bad(defective) phaser parts, so they were going to redo that as well. I was hesitant because of the other bad work they had done on the truck, but I figured I’d take the risk, considering they put bad parts in. I went and picked the truck up last Wednesday, and all was good. No oil leak, no phaser noise, I was happy. Until Thursday… my wife was driving it to work, and on her way home, she said “it felt like something fell out of the truck, or I was hit, there was a loud bang, and the truck shut off. Now it won’t start.” So now it’s been towed back to the ford dealer. Any ideas?

Yeah you definitely got me there. Talked to a tech at another local dealer, that actually has a good reputation, before I had it towed back to the 1st, and they said it would have to go back to the shitty one because they did the warranty repair the first AND second time.

Find the regional Ford rep and let them know about the problems you have been having. Dealers don't like Ford looking up their skirt...

That doesn't make sense. When mine had issues I took it to a different local dealer and they fixed it. I agree with F150RTR, go up the chain.

Another example of technology exceeding the ability of support. Great trucks till they’re not.
