Powerboost Ramblings

I'm about a month (1300 miles) into the swap from my 2018 KingRanch and so the data-comparison is starting to shape up. So I thought I'd share a few things as I go and maybe it will have value, maybe not. :)

I can tell you a few of my favorite Gen2 3.5 Ecoboost/10r80 differences, as well as anything I don't like as much.

Top billing is the increase in oil pressure at idle and low-torque demand cruising! Yaw have suffered my oil pressure rant for more than 3 years, so I won't re-hash, but this truck idles and cruises at 36-40psi. SO MUCH BETTER than 22-26. (I fully admit that I have no expertise on the subject, but oil pressure in the low 20's at 70mph would creep me out)

Second billing is the ECT Temps. It's already nasty hot down here in the tropic of coastal Texas. 95-100F with the heat index hitting 105F on the trucks ambient temp gauge. But where the KingRanch operated in the 208-216F ECT range, this truck is in the 187-196F range. I'm stunned. I really really want to know what Ford did?

Note: I haven't towed anything yet, so please don't think I am implying........
I'm only saying that this truck stays below 200F in typical daytoday use.

Obviously I do not know what role the electric motor assist plays in the ECT's. I DO however know that it is part of the equation in what I describe as an irritating clumsiness from a dead start in "Normal Mode". The truck attempts to be an EV truck, but since that electric motor isn't strong enough to provide the torque request of "let's go", the ecu changes its mind and says "let's go ICE", at about the same moment that the transmission has been told to skip 2nd gear and go to 3rd. The whole thing is just clumsy. Irritating.
Ironically, Normal mode doesn't skip 4th and 6th like the KingRanch did. Which is GREAT! Other than the clumsy start, Normal mode is actually just fine for normal driving. Go figure. That's definitely a substantial change in Fords 10r80 strategy.
There ARE 2 different things that I can do to mitigate the stumble. First I can just be intentionally aggressive with the throttle from a stop and force the truck to completely give up on the idea of even trying to be EV. This also causes Normal Mode to use 2nd gear, therefore the truck doesn't skip any gears, just like Sport mode on the KingRanch. Or I can take off intentionally like an old geezer and the truck will not only use 2nd gear, but may even stay in EV mode for a little longer and as a result have some momentum before it switches to ICE, which is completely transparent most of the time.

By the way, Sport Mode seems to nix EV altogether and the truck is a completely normal ICE truck with a 10-speed, albeit with considerably increased tip-in throttle mapping. Even more aggressive and "Sporty" than the ICE only KingRanch.

In summary, increased oil pressure, decreased ECT's, and a Normal mode that is better AND worse than the previous truck.

From what I have heard, the actual motor itself is the same Gen2 3.5 Ecoboost between the two trucks. Including the cheap cast pistons and poor ring-pack. But there does seem to be significant changes in the software at least. And there's definitely a substantial engineering difference in the 10r80 to accommodate the Hybrid hardware and the re-engineered transmission cooling.

Wait wait wait, that's your MPG running the magic OEM+ E-blend??
Would you say that is comparable to your long term averages on the stuff?
If so that's a solid 10+ mpg better than I avg on the same 12-13 mpg. That would be enormous.
Yea, I'm only 3 days into this tank with my daily commute running the 26/4 gallon cocktail.

But it's the 80F+ weather that has the truck getting getting more miles per tank than coastal winter temps allowed.

The Powerboost comes into it's own with warm/hot weather

I was averaging high 21's and low 22's mpg

Previous best was a 22.6 and two 22.4's. Today's route included 45 miles of interstate at 65 city -75 mph rural and the rest was 55-60 mph rural 2-lane blacktop plus ten miles of 35-45 mph suburban streets.

How do I figure out if I have blue cruise? I have park assist which is supposedly in the same package, but didn’t see it listed on the sticker and doesn’t show up on the connected page on the Ford website… is it safe to say I don’t have it?

It says assist, so that’d be a no one blue cruise. Ok now I know for sure, thanks @snakebitten ;

Seriously, you are NOT missing as much as you might think.
My 2021 Powerboost was copilot assist. So I was wondering what all the Bluecruise fuss was that I was missing. Meanwhile totally enjoying the wonderful Adaptive Cruise and Lane Centering and accident avoidance system that truck had. And by the time I traded it in, I had done a ton of updates and the features had even been refined a bit.

I ordered the "Active" in the 2022.
I actually kind of regret it.
The addition of the iris scanner ruins the concept. While Bluecruise is pretty cool when it activates, my percentage of time on Bluecruise roads is low. Yet I'm stuck with that obnoxious iris scanning nanny even when I'm NOT in Bluecruise Mode.

I don't know why Ford has the iris scanner enabled when you aren't in Bluecruise. Afterall, when not in Bluecruise I'm enjoying exactly what your truck has. I don't mind the "Keep your hands on the wheel" nanny since it's almost effortless to negate. I rarely even get the alert because I'm one with the copilot after 2 years of using it everyday.

But that iris witch? She's such a.......

Ford really needs to send an update to limit her to Bluecruise only!
Or the Forscan gurus need to hack that nasty....

I think that's the most I've thought words that I can't type in a single post in 15,000 posts? 🤣🤣

Bluecruise is gorgeous on the instrument panel.
And with 1.2 coming? The Mach-E evaluation/review of it states it's the best system industry wide! Beats Tesla, Mercedes,.... All of them. But the nanny needs a hack.

There's been a few complaints about the Steeda rear sway bar endlinks being too long to get the Sway bar parallel to the ground. And I admit, it did visually bother me a bit too.

I pulled one of the endlinks off today with the intent of taking some measurements and see what options I might have to shortening the assembly.

First thing was to disassemble and clean things up after a few months of winter weather.

After taking a copper wire wheel to the threads and some all purpose cleaner to the painted surfaces, I noticed that the materials used held up to the environment really well.

But more importantly I realized the potential for reducing the length by removing one of the lock nuts as well as threading both sleaves as far as possible.

It turns out that both sleaves are actually threaded deeper than the threaded insert is long. So what I "felt" was the end of the threads was just paint or debris, and so I greased up the threads on the insert and "chased" it into the sleaves all the way.

This reduced the length this much:

No need to alter the endlinks or build shorter substitute. Close enough now that it doesn't even tickle what little OCD lies hidden within me. 😁

Only bad about the whole job was I could see the grime of 53 weeks of ownership under the truck.

I need to figure out a good way to wash the undercarriage of the truck while it's on the lift without making an uncontrolled mess. I think I can build a curtain around the truck with some tarps?

Those would have probably been missing a quarter of the paint and rusty after one winter up here 😆. Your couple months is 7 of salt, sand, and brine here.

Make yourself a high pressure spray bar that you drive over, or a right angle head on a pressure washer wand and something to roll it around under the truck. Like one of those driveway cleaners but turned upsidedown.

Well there goes $35 lol
That's pretty cool!
Especially for a good prewash before going on the lift!

I have one of those, the work pretty good, not perfect especially with mud, but sand and dirt I found more than I imagined. Good investment and then you flip the button and can “sweep” the driveway

Ford's OTA is either feast or famine.
But currently it's in feast mode and updates are flowing.

4.2.2 a few days back
4.2.3 Saturday
4.2.4 today

Rumors are this is prepping for the next version of Lane Keeping and Adaptive Cruise /Bluecruise that the 2023 Mach-E has. If so, that'll be awesome.

There's a certain joy I'd get when I saw a new tune file show up in my inbox.

I suppose in the OTA world its like that, but so much more is fair game for the "tuner".

Except the tuner doesn't have Carte Blanche with your truck out in the driveway while you are counting sheep.

It's cool and creepy at the same time.

If that is the case, I would be very happy that I changed my mind and added it to my order at the last minute so long ago. I added it just because I thought it might help the resale price of the vehicle if/when I traded it.

And slightly scary that they could just say you can no longer drive your truck.
Well onstar has had that ability forever, hasn't it?
