Powerboost Ramblings

I'm about a month (1300 miles) into the swap from my 2018 KingRanch and so the data-comparison is starting to shape up. So I thought I'd share a few things as I go and maybe it will have value, maybe not. :)

I can tell you a few of my favorite Gen2 3.5 Ecoboost/10r80 differences, as well as anything I don't like as much.

Top billing is the increase in oil pressure at idle and low-torque demand cruising! Yaw have suffered my oil pressure rant for more than 3 years, so I won't re-hash, but this truck idles and cruises at 36-40psi. SO MUCH BETTER than 22-26. (I fully admit that I have no expertise on the subject, but oil pressure in the low 20's at 70mph would creep me out)

Second billing is the ECT Temps. It's already nasty hot down here in the tropic of coastal Texas. 95-100F with the heat index hitting 105F on the trucks ambient temp gauge. But where the KingRanch operated in the 208-216F ECT range, this truck is in the 187-196F range. I'm stunned. I really really want to know what Ford did?

Note: I haven't towed anything yet, so please don't think I am implying........
I'm only saying that this truck stays below 200F in typical daytoday use.

Obviously I do not know what role the electric motor assist plays in the ECT's. I DO however know that it is part of the equation in what I describe as an irritating clumsiness from a dead start in "Normal Mode". The truck attempts to be an EV truck, but since that electric motor isn't strong enough to provide the torque request of "let's go", the ecu changes its mind and says "let's go ICE", at about the same moment that the transmission has been told to skip 2nd gear and go to 3rd. The whole thing is just clumsy. Irritating.
Ironically, Normal mode doesn't skip 4th and 6th like the KingRanch did. Which is GREAT! Other than the clumsy start, Normal mode is actually just fine for normal driving. Go figure. That's definitely a substantial change in Fords 10r80 strategy.
There ARE 2 different things that I can do to mitigate the stumble. First I can just be intentionally aggressive with the throttle from a stop and force the truck to completely give up on the idea of even trying to be EV. This also causes Normal Mode to use 2nd gear, therefore the truck doesn't skip any gears, just like Sport mode on the KingRanch. Or I can take off intentionally like an old geezer and the truck will not only use 2nd gear, but may even stay in EV mode for a little longer and as a result have some momentum before it switches to ICE, which is completely transparent most of the time.

By the way, Sport Mode seems to nix EV altogether and the truck is a completely normal ICE truck with a 10-speed, albeit with considerably increased tip-in throttle mapping. Even more aggressive and "Sporty" than the ICE only KingRanch.

In summary, increased oil pressure, decreased ECT's, and a Normal mode that is better AND worse than the previous truck.

From what I have heard, the actual motor itself is the same Gen2 3.5 Ecoboost between the two trucks. Including the cheap cast pistons and poor ring-pack. But there does seem to be significant changes in the software at least. And there's definitely a substantial engineering difference in the 10r80 to accommodate the Hybrid hardware and the re-engineered transmission cooling.

And there is always the option to disable updates (unless a future update removes that option).
Disabling updates in Sync4, only disables updates that require the vehicle to be inoperable for a period of time.
It does not prohibit the kind of updates that are currently being pushed out.
Things like Telematics, Gateway, and APIM are going to go through unless either the file download fails, or the battery voltage SOC is prohibitively low.

You can disconnect the Telematic C Module though. (behind the passenger rear seat)
That'll certainly stop it since the truck would no longer be able to communicate with the servers.
Yep, they have.

Just wrap it in tinfoil. Oh wait, it's an aluminum body so it already is...

Side note, I wish mine was aluminum after dealing with all this rust lately!

I can now say I learned something new today! Thanks for that insight.

Sorry for the sidetrack but is the “ultimate trailer tow system w/ pro trailer assist”?

I have the TPMS kit, which includes all the stuff for the trailer camera and obviously the tpms sensors for the trailer and yaw sensor, also a harness I may need. Apparently that’s a requirement, but I don’t see a listing for that anywhere. I do have the 360° camera, backup cameras, and pro trailer assist.

I think that’s all I need? According to other forums that everything people purchased. My plug that attaches to the trailer connector plug has 8 wires so I believe that good for the yaw sensor?

Ford's OTA is either feast or famine.
But currently it's in feast mode and updates are flowing.

4.2.2 a few days back
4.2.3 Saturday
4.2.4 today

Rumors are this is prepping for the next version of Lane Keeping and Adaptive Cruise /Bluecruise that the 2023 Mach-E has. If so, that'll be awesome.

My truck is fairly simple. It doesn't have Blue Cruise, or adaptive cruise control, etc. Doesn't have front sensors either.

So you bought "the kit" and it included the trailer side harness?
Is it LC3Z1A189A

And your truck has the 12-pin receptacle below the 7-pin standard trailer receptacle? Or do you need to install that from the kit?

Some 2021 F150's came with the correct hitch receptacles for this setup from the factory. (my Plat Powerboost did. Had the Yaw sensor too)

I don't remember all the details but it may require you to do some wiring on your truck as well. And you might have to do some Forscan editing?

You should already have all the different trailer camera views available in Sync4 when you are connected to a trailer. Have you checked that yet?

Yes it’s the LC3Z1A189A
I will have to install the 7/12 receptacle (I have the 7/4), but looking behind the bumper in the connector there are 8 wires (which I think was a requirement for the yaw sensor) not 2 like some others. There was an additional harness ordered also (from the other forum post) I figured I would order just in case. I haven’t hooked up ForScan yet to do anything at all yet but I figured I will have to activate something. I do have a “camera intended for trailer only” selection.

I think you got everything you will need then.
Looking forward to you showing off all the cool features.
TPMS in the factory instrument cluster is really nice.
After 1 year and a couple of hundred repeated commutes of the exact same route, I'm convinced the deletion of the IWE from the 4WD Powerboost is the main reason for the 2021 EPA 24mpg rating being dropped to 23mpg.

I say that because the commute in 4A yields the same results as 2Hi. Or it's so similar that you can't really differentiate. It falls within the variances of human driving day to day.

The only variable that might aid 4A in the comparison is that rain can and does perhaps influence the pace. But it also increases the rolling resistance some?

Today's rainy 4A commute.
Basically identical to many screenshots of this commute in this thread.

So, it really tends to reinforce that the IWE was put in to positively impact the overall fuel economy, much like auto stop / start.
At least part of the equation.
True. We could add in the minuscule windshield washer reservoir saving at least 3-4 pounds of unsprung weight! ⛈

I take a little shorter route on the return trip from the office. About a mil shorter. But the traffic is more competitive and so the boost moments are more likely.
Still, in 2Hi VS 4A, about the same mileage.
4A actually did a little better today.

Girls are giving it a test run in the yard.

Ok, it's really Pawpaw doing a test run of putting it up. 😁

Update:
Only one of the 4 made it past 10pm.

And yea, it was my best friend, so she was less out-of-place if Pawpaw was there.
She loved the Chorus of the frogs! (the pond at night is 1000 member choir)

She fell asleep 1/2 way through "Inside Out" movie on the tablet. Around 11pm.

I don't think she moved 2" all night and she woke as sweet as she can be. Pawpaw made her a breakfast milkshake and while I stretched my bones and had a cup of espresso, she watched the Rabbit having breakfast.

Next tent night is Surfside!

Good solution! They are probably less costly than the tent company’s strap covers AND you have a more versatile item to use for other things.
