I saw these but something told me not to even try it. I removed the axles, pull them apart and put on the replacement Ford boots.
I just don't see how these would stay together. 🤷‍♀️

 

I recall these split boots were common way back in the day (1980’s when I worked at an auto parts store) but they weren’t viewed as a long term solution. If the CV already had dirt in it, you were just adding a boot to protect the damaged CV.
If you’re looking for an interim solution until you replace these, they may work (for a little while).

More often than not, when I see a part or item like this that doesn’t have a fit or application for our trucks I surmise it’s because it won’t work or works so poorly, no one will make it. If they don’t make it for the #1 selling truck, there’s probably a reason.

 

I get all that but again, short term solution. No current dirt or damage to CV - I am just catching it (truth be told, I saw it cracking and prodded it apart myself.)

For what it's worth, they're also pretty popular overseas, but I also get the sense the ones there are of higher quality, in how the 'slice' butts together.


Might try one of those CV cone things to slip one on.

 

Caulk the tear, make sure it cures before driving it. If you have any permatex gasket maker (green for heavy lube??), use that. Again, these are temporary solutions.

 

Thanks - I just did something somewhat similar. It's drying now.. we'll see if it sticks. Used Lexel on the top half. Going to let cure, then rotate (roll the truck back) 180 degrees and do the other half. Red-neck repair I know but it should do the job (I hope) until I'm ready to add the extreme angle CV's this summer.

I wouldn't even bother with it until you are ready to swap the shaft out. I know of CV shafts that have gone years with torn boots, slinging all the grease out and clickity clacking along for 10's of thousands of miles.

 

Do the axels rotate in 2wd?

 

^ I had the same thought. In 2wd I don't believe they're supposed to - in 4wd Auto they definitely do.

However.. I think even in 2wd.. they do spin to some degree purely from soft friction. The only reason I think this is because I have some grease sling despite not having it in 4wd since they've torn (which is to say, only a few drives in town after they tore).

I am going to glue the other half today w/lexel. But I also had another idea last night.. I have some thick needles and string I use when re-threading my vinyl seats on my boat. I'm going to quickly sew the boot then add lexel over that. Should be pretty solid.

Oh I don't disagree. But at the same time, I don't want grease on my truck even for one mile.. so.. there's that


Total off-topic and random.. but.. my stupid Mishimoto radiator started leaking over the weekend. Mishi like 2 months out on getting me a new one... arghhhhhhh.

Fortunately found a Desno HD radiator (to install while I wait for the replacement) with a price typo on amazon for $49.99.... they fixed the price 30 minutes after I placed the order.. but still sent it!

That takes a ton of pressure off other people’s (my) shoulders when we do it.

PS. I’m happy the radiator deal fell your way.

 

I guess if the latex/permatex/silicon doesn't work you could either let it go for now and hope grease doesn't get all over anything or you could put the split boot over the exisiting one. I've actually driven on torn boots for several thousand miles and had no issues.

As far as the radiator, that stinks!
