Hoping for a little help understanding what is going on. It's a new to us 2020 Expedition but I'm posting here because I know there is vastly more experience and knowledge about the 3.5 in the F150 community than in the Expedition owner community.
Has 33500 miles, we have put the last 2200 or so on it. The scenario is we were on the freeway doing about 70 steady through low rolling hills in central VA, towing a lightly loaded 5x10 cargo trailer. Over the preceeding week we had towed it through the mountains and put on about 2000 miles with zero issues, very thrilled about the Expedition and the 3.5.
Out of the blue I notice this loud air wooshing sound. At first I though maybe it was some shield underneath had come loose and was dragging on the highway, pretty loud noise but hard to pinpoint a source at first. It would go away when I fully let off throttle, and it really seemed to first start on the passenger side, then drivers side when tipping back into the throttle. No change in power that I could perceive. Also of note, it would not occur in sport or tow mode but would occur in normal or eco mode. Not sure what is with that, but definitely repeatable, not occurring in any way in sport mode under any throttle input. Also no CEL, yet.
Is something with a waste gate sticking or broken? Why would sport and tow mode make it stop, do they keep the boost a bit higher under low throttle and that may be how it's affecting it? It is definitely not the normal turbo sound the 3.5 makes, I've driven them before, this is something entirely different.
Thanks for any help or guidance. I like to be as well informed as possible before venturing to the dealership.....
