School had a fundraiser today where a local Ford dealership would donate $20 for taking a test drive. Figured it was a good opportunity to help out the school and test drive a new 2015 F150. To my surprise, they had 12 different new Fords for the taking including an SCrew Lariat 4x4 5.0 and an SCrew XLT 4x4 3.5 Ecoboost. Part of the route was pulling onto a stretch of 4-lane highway which gave me a chance to get into it a bit. First, I drove the 5.0. I was expecting similar acceleration to the Ecoboost. It was smooth, but didn't offer any wow factor and seemed to shift too early before getting into it's powerband. Acceleration was kind of almost like the e-brake was partially on and required a lot of throttle to get her moving. The Ecoboost throttle response was much better and did provide that wow factor I've come to enjoy. It felt stronger than my 2013 on stock tune and seemed to have better shift points. It felt like Ford has definitely made the stock feel much more crisp. Bottom line, I was amazed at the difference in feel between the 5.0 and 3.5 Ecoboost. I was really expecting them to be fairly close in acceleration. The low end torque of the Ecoboost really separates it apart. I can't imagine the difference there would be hooked up to an 8,000 lb. travel trailer.

I drove all of the Motor combos prior to buying my truck. The V8 definitely had the sound factor, the 2.7EB with 3.55 gears when stomped on was a lot of fun but kinda raw (acceleration caught me off gourd first time I pushed the pedal), the 3.5 EB for me was the middle ground and tow capacity on my truck is 10.5K which was a much better choice for my application. If all I wanted was a pickup for the occasional dump run etc... I would probably9 go with the 2.7EB just for the fun factor!!

Test drove 2 5.0's and 3 Ecoboosts before buying my 2012. Miss the V8 sound but love the torque.

I drove both back to back to back to back, you get the idea. In my 13 I got the Eco and in my 15 I ended up with the eco though I wanted to like the 5.0 better but the new tune Ford has on the 15's is awesome. Makes my 13 feel slow. Haven't tried the sport mode yet but have used to tow and the eco is just the better choice if you work your truck.
i test drove both trucks towing my trailer with a light load (dealer loved that request) and the eco felt much stronger towing.
either are good motors, you just have to decide which is best for your style of driving.

I went and test drove a RAM Ecodiesel/Hemi 5.7 back to back, test drove a Chevy 5.3, a Tundra, tried to get information from my Nissan dealer about the Titan XD (Had a 2012 Frontier 6-speed on Lease that's coming to term). Nissan dealer had no information/details, went down the road to a ford dealer. Test drive a XLT 301a with a 3.5 ecoboost and then a Lariat 502a 5.0. I liked the Lariat more (for obvious reasons). I said "If this had the Ecoboost it'd be perfect!" and that's how I made my decision.

After looking at numbers and my budget, I have a brand new 2015 XLT 302a FX4 Sport with a 3.5 Ecoboost. I'm happy.
