Transfer Case swap, Lariat+ Vs Raptor difference?

Before we get started, yes I’m aware of differences between 4a and 4h, this discussion is not meant to become an argument between the merits of both like some of the other swap threads I’ve seen.

Is the 4a transfer case in the Lariats the same unit as in the Raptor? I haven’t been able to find a definitive answer. Has anyone swapped a Raptor Tcase into an XLT? I’m wondering if it’s possible to get the drive modes and AWD system the Raptor in my 17’ xlt. I know I should just buy a Raptor but I want to keep the payload and towing of my XLT, not to mention it’s paid off and I hate payments.

Great article. It points out how the Raptor is far from just a longer travel big tire F150. You get some very unique engineering for that extra price over an equally dolled up Limited, Platinum, King Ranch.

However, after reading that article, if I WERE looking to upgrade my 4WD XLT to a more sophisticated front power distribution, I think the road biased 4A upgrade is far easier to justify than the obvious complexity and price for the full Raptor options. That is, assuming my truck is going to be doing very little high-speed offroading.

For the road bias to really be effective my understanding is that the front diff will need to be upgraded to an LSD. The article talks about how the Raptor case was special because when it’s in 4h it’s mechanically locked like my standard esof case. I’m wondering if the lariat case is clutch pack only for 4h or does it have the same internals as the Raptor part. Idk I’m digging into the weeds here. Seeing the two part listings at a different price and with Raptor specifying 4LOC it’s leading me to believe they’re different. Idk

Yes. The transfer cases are the same. The only thing that matters is that it can only work with the 10R80. Stupid Fast Truck on YouTube did the TC swap to a Coyote XLT. You can find the video here.
So I looked up the transfer cases by Vin for a 2017 lariat and a 2017 Raptor. You’re correct the part number is the same but the Raptor one is $100 more and says “4hi lock” and the lariat does not?🤔 I did watch that video and saw it was possible. So is there a benefit to the Raptor Tcase over the Lariat then?

Forums ARE for arguing.
True, I just hate having to read through 14 pages of crap to find bits and pieces of info that are relevant.

I'm no expert, but I believe the Raptor front diff is different than the upper trim level 4A differential. I just can't remember exactly what that difference is.
It’s a Torsen limited slip if I recall. That can be added to the standard diff, or another LS insert could be used. I’m more interested in learning if the transfer case operates differently than the standard 4a case does. I drive through a lot of snowy mountain roads and I don’t like leaving it in 4hi all the time when the roads are patchy ice like is common. The 4a I had in my Ram 1500 was fantastic.
