I really like the akebono proact I've been using for the last 15k. Replaced oem pads to try to reduce dusting and have been very happy with the replacements.
Any squealing with the Akebono pads? I love their low dust pads but they are noisy on my Mercedes.

Not a peep so far.
Wait until Easter time - those little yellow and pink peeps will be everywhere!
Here's a little known phact about Peeps - Every single one ever made was made in the 1950's. They've got a phenomenal shelf life.
Here is, however, a real fact - sad but true - about Peeps - ‘The Father of Peeps’ has died (eastbaytimes.com)

Edit. I know that has nothing to do with brakes but what were the odds someone would mention “peep” 10 minutes after I read that new story about the father of peeps dying?

Have Raybestos EHT pads/rotors front and rear. Happy with performance in all aspects. Could have a little bit better initial bite, but it's not the end of the world.

I ended up just going with the Powerstop 17-1790 (Z17) kit from Amazon. Drove around a bit today and the noise is definitely getting noisier. Hope they can hold on until Sunday when I have a chance to change them out.
Maybe the pads are dragging on the rotor or you got a pebble in there, etc..

I hope for your sake that you find an obvious and easily fixed cause when you dig into it.

I'm guessing there is some salt or a rock in there too (or like you previously said, a cracked pad). The sound is definitely getting worse but I don't drive around all that much anymore so hopefully I will be fine until I can dive into replacing them.

I went with the Powerstops (Z36-1414) on my 2014 when the originals started squealing at around 35K miles......all four wheels. I've been very happy with them after 40K miles and counting. Can't remember who I bought them from, but it was one of the online truck parts stores.

Maybe the best question to ask here, "Has anyone bought stinky awful aftermarket brake pads to avoid?"

Everyone seems to like everything. That doesn't seem right.
You’re on to something! I guess brake pads have just become a commodity with less “bad brands” than any other auto part. I’ve seen more negative talk on wiper blades than brake pads on this forum.

If I really need to slow aggressively, that's when the various brake pads/rotors show me what they got.
On any of my motorcycles, I am more discerning because I aggressively brake as a normal routine.

The Miata is a braking masterpiece, but that's kinda cheating since the brakepad surface to weight ratio, along with the contact patch to weight ratio.... Well, let's just say there are a lot of great brake kits that can show off with that easy burden.

The truck?
I don't drive like the grandpa that I am, but I also don't brake near as late in the truck in Normal driving. So again, not very discerning when I'm mostly braking at less than 7-10's, so to speak.

But I have had BIG braking power in an F150 and there's just not going to be a pad choice that's going to replicate that with oem calipers and rotors. A matter of physics. :)

But when/if it comes to needing new rotors and pads? I'm going for performance and more than willing to give up longevity.

I used to use EBC and StopTech for many years. Put them on all of my own vehicles along with numerous cars and trucks for family members, co-workers and friends. Never had a complaint. I got out of that game for the most part and haven't needed to do a brake job for a few years now. Started looking at prices tonight because my rear pads are getting thin. EBC prices are absolutely ridiculous now and StopTech aren't any better!

PowerStop seems to be fairly popular, especially for the $$. I have installed a few Z23 and Z36 sets on family members vehicles in the past with some mixed but mostly positive results.

I drive my truck pretty hard and the OE brakes have held up surprisingly well. I'm approaching 50K miles now and they still feel straight and true. Leaning towards staying with Motorcraft. Anyone know if 42K points will cover a rear brake job? I suppose I should stop by the local stealer and check.

I think I cashed in 123,000 points on my rear brakes and rotors.
Nice, so maybe I'm looking at a third off. Not bad. I'm more excited about having someone else do it for a change, lol. Stinks getting old. Brakes are boring. But at least I'd still get excited if I were bolting on some big turbos! So I'm not dead yet.

30 minute job after borrowing my buddies jack that can actually lift the truck without using 2x6" blocks to elevate the jack.

Inner drivers rear was the culprit and appears that it dug into the rotor a bit. I didn't have another vehicle handy to go get some new rotors so I'm going to let it ride. Took a quick drive on the highway and there was a slight noise from the drivers rear but went away pretty quick.

Those pads were a mess.

I'm not sure, but I don't think I've ever seen wear patterns like those have. What would make both ends of each pad wear in a direction opposite from the direction the rotor turns?

Looks like something ground off each end of each pad. Pretty strange.

I don’t think your rotor looks too bad however the wear on one pad greater than it’s mate says your caliper is binding. Whatever it floats on needs cleaning, possible lubrication.

I have no idea why the pads were worn the way they were, especially the inside one being worn more than the outside. Maybe all the salt and grime crap they put on the roads around here?

The one thing I thought was REALLY funky about the rear brakes was that the rotors are not secured to the hub whatsoever. Once you take the brake caliper and pads out, the rotor is free to move around as well. There is no caliper "frame" like on the fronts and there is no screw you have to remove from the plate to remove it.

Just to throw my 2¢ in, I spoke yesterday with a company called buybrakes.com (anyone can PM me for a direct number to the guy I dealt with, and if you detail your specific needs he’ll come up with a combo pack for you and beat any price except remanufactured) that sold me Powerstop powder coated (red) OE calipers (part # s5404), EBC slotted rotors (usr7462), and the best pads known to mankind, NRS (ns1414s), for under $700 all in.

I’ve seen this combo used on 4 other F150’s and not only is it flawless performance WAY over stock, but it looks good and almost zero dust.

I know $150 msrp for front pads is a lot, but they blow anything else out the water (plus they’ll negotiate on price, especially if you’re a mechanic). I’ve seen these NRS pads with 50k on them and still read 5/16” on a truck with 35x12.5x20 chunky mud tires.

In brakes, ime, it’s all about the pads. If you research NRS you’ll see why they’re significantly better and worth the extra cash. Pair them with quality slotted rotors instead of slotted AND drilled, you have a setup that’ll last for a very, very long time with performance far beyond stock. I would venture to bet that some NRS pads even on Duralast Gold blank rotors would be a decent combo.

Another good company for rotors is Dynamic Friction. Another good website is R1 Concepts, but they are pricey. Their tech is awesome though. I’d go to R1 before shopping Brembo or Wilwood, having used all 3 in the past, for a big brake setup.

PRO TIP: don’t use the sticky blue “high temp” grease, use silicone grease, preferably with graphite or PTFE in it on the clips and slide pins. It preserves the rubber especially well compared to petroleum based grease.

Put power stop z36 rotor/pad kit on a few years ago. Was initially impressed, but the PS pads wore unevenly and I even ended up with a “free” set of front pads on warranty. I have since switched over to motor craft pads… the blue superduty up front and standard in back… on the power stop d&s rotors after having them turned.
