I loved my truck when I bought it in Sept 2011, I did much research on the eco-boost and was amazed by the power and torque of this truck stock. I have a 10,000 lb hoist in my shop and perform all the maintenance myself on my truck. I only run Synthetic Oil and change it regularly. Also installed a K&N Filter over stock and also change it regularly. I started to experience hesitation and shutter during WOT passing vehicles on the hwy at about 50k Kms. I brought the truck in to FORD dealer and they upgraded my intercooler and re-programmed the ECU. Didn't solve the problem. I knew this was intermittent problem and Ford couldn't give 2 shits about this problem.

I lived with the sputter and hesitation until tonite. Truck was due for its next oil & filter change and I decided to change the spark plugs as well. Mileage is at 99K Kms and upon measuring the plugs I removed, the gap was out by 10 thousands compared to the new ones. Installed the new plugs which measured .027 gap and were pre-gapped, after test driving, sputter and hesitation was completely gone.

I hope this helps. If you experience the same thing I did, try changing your spark plugs. Ford recommends plugs at 160K. If you have sputter, change the plugs.

Great news!!!

I, truly, believe that the plugs should be checked before any software updates or intercooler changes...it just seems like the guys getting the TSB's are all bitching that the power is gone.

is this intercooler up date a recall from ford? is there a service bulletin on it?? my eco is at 24k miles and im getting the sputter when there is alot of moisture in the air. my dealer said there isnt any updates or issues.??

Hey guys im new here, i have a 2012 eco-screw and love it, but it idles rough ... Pisses me iff, its been. Idling between 990-1000 rpms lately it used to idle at around 5 or 6... Please help... I replaced plugs twice all crafully gapped to .030, i always run 93 octane, livernois 91 octane tune, aem drop in airfilter, i have a nice oil separator on my pcv valve, so ya... Why is it idling soo rough?!?!

Bumping this old thread instead of starting new one. I have 2011 fx4 and was on the interstate going around 80 and after the guy holding up the fast lane finally moved over I gassed it to pass and it tried to downshift but started hesitating/sputtering so I let off a little. I just changed my plugs the other day with motorcrafts gapped to 30. I'm guessing when I punched it I sucked up some moisture from the intercooler. Should I start with a catch can or aftermarket cac? I'm looking at the full race catch can and atp cac with the drain plug.

I had a built subaru forester xt and know about boost leaks and how it will mess with fuel trims amongst other things so I'm not trying to drill a weep hole and would just buy aftermarket. Thanks

Just drill the 1/16 hole in the CAC spec bg. A catch can won't do dick all for the moisture in the cac. I have a catch can and i've drilled the hole in the intercooler as have 75% of the guys on here. It made zero difference ZERO in. 75% of guys with aftermarket CAC's are drilling holes too.

Thanks for the reply. I'll drill the hole then... I figured that's what it was. When I stepped on it that just sucked up all that moisture. I thought about the this forum when it happened. I had to let off and cruise in the slow lane...if I got the atp, couldn't I just drain it often? Also would that be the cause of ****ty mpg? I just switched to all season tires from heavy all terrains and saved 15lbs a corner just on tire weight but still only got a avg of 16.5mpg cruising at 75mph

No it's likely winter gas and cold temps dropping your mpg.

Good advise from Winchested, he is spot on. This is exactly what I have experienced and ultimately it is the pee-hole that has done the trick!

I've had no stuttering since the drill.

I also run a a catch can and this time of year I will drain 12-18 ounces per 500 miles, but the catch can by itself did not stop the occasional WOT stuttering I experienced during highway driving in humid or wet conditions.

Plus, I have had no negative ramifications from drilling the hole!!
