2.7 Eco vs really loud Ram 1500 Hemi

So this new looking Crew Cab Ram was driving along side of me, and then he would floor it to zoom ahead, I would catch up, and repeat. I'm thinking he had aftermarket exhaust because he was just making lots of noise. We came to a stop with a 100 km/h (60mph) stretch of road ahead. Turned off the traction control, start-stop off, and put it in sport mode. The lights turned green and we went. I didn't hear his tires squeal but his engine was redlining and it was quite loud. He was half a hood ahead of me for about 2 seconds and I blew past him once the turbos spooled up. By the time I hit 100 I was 3 truck lengths ahead of him, but his truck sure did make a lot of noise at least LOL We're both shortbox crew cabs and I'm running 3.73 gears and 4x4. Didn't notice the trim of the Ram.

After 30 seconds or so he passed me after I had slowed back down to 100. He gunned it past me like as if the race was still going even though he saw me brake. Congrats, you can exceed the speed limit more than I want to hahaha And at the next stop he rolled his window down but I was turning so I didn't bother stopping to chat.

I find it funny how many people I must surprise with my quiet little engine, even cars ;)

I think to add further insult next time that happens, I'll do the 2-foot brake-and-gas hold to keep my RPM's at 1000 so that the turbos are already spooled up.

Yup, he was only the 2nd ram to do something like this, and I'm 2 for 2 :p I guess he thought maybe his new loud catback made him go faster? lol

Yeah I wasn't crazy about the idea at first either, but like Adrokk said, you get used to it. I used to turn it off because I found it strange but I think it helps in the city.

Think about it this way: On a drive in the city, say you sit at a red light for 2 minutes. Now, on the entire trip, you hit 10 red lights. With the engine turning off at these lights, you've saved yourself 20 minutes of wasting gas just idling. In a few hours of driving you could hit 30 red lights which is an HOUR of just idling.

At least the system is smart. It doesn't turn off the engine if you have the AC on and the cab temperature is still warm, or vice versa in the winter, if you have the heat on and the cab is still cold, it will stay on. If it senses the interior temperature change too much while the engine is off, it'll start it back up automatically to get it back to the temperature you want. It also won't turn off until the engine is warmed up. And it starts up really fast. As soon as you start taking your foot off the brake it fires up in a split second. You can't even get your foot on the gas before it's ready to go.

And since I'm putting out info for future questions, it's not a normal starter motor, and it's designed to restart over and over all day long. The oil is also still pumped while the engine is off with an electric pump. These systems have been around in Europe for a long long time and they still make them, so it's not a failure-prone system when done right.

Just checked the stats for 2015 eco's. They have the limiters set at 110mph. I tested it tonight, and, sure enough, it's true. My truck cut out right at 110mph.

Good stuff! Funny thing is he is probably on the ram forum saying how,he caught up at about 100 and blew past you lol.

Does sport mode actually make a noticeable difference? I feel like if I had a '15 I would ALWAYS be in sport mode

Yeah, even though I braked well past 100, to slow back to the limit (100) and I was way ahead of him, so he definitely saw my brake lights.

Sport mode makes a huge difference. It's like:

Barely touch the gas pedal: 50% throttle
Push the pedal even a bit more : WOT

It also stays in a lower gear to keep the RPM's up so that the turbos stay spooled, and will hold lower gears for much longer when coasting unless you brake quite a bit, and will downshift like you would in a manual while slowing to a stop. Crappy thing is you have to turn sport mode on every time you start the truck. For normal driving, it's actually a little too touchy.

He must be talking about Canadian units...
Correct, 100 km/h or 60mph. But, most vehicles I owned I've been able to get to 185km/h, even my Nissan Xterra, which is 115MPH. Maybe Canadian stock tunes have higher speed limiters? I assume it's a law or regulation somewhere.

No one races around here. There are a a lot of EB F150's and none of them care. Other than that there are a ton of Toyota Tundras and a handful of GM's and rams. I think they all know the EB will embarrass them at this altitude unless they are heavily modded.

I get a lot of lifted tricked out chevy's and ram's. Had a Raptor decide he wanted to play last night on the highway but I wasn't biting... notorious stretch for police activity.

The start/stop tech freaks people out at red lights....they don't understand, and think its me turning the engine on an off.. always get looks from that! haha

lol yep, same here. Especially in drive-throughs. The people in front are usually looking in their mirror for what's doing it, and I don't think they expect it to be my truck.

it's set at 160 for us Canadians.

100km/hr is the speed he was going.

I've managed to go past 105 with my 2015. Maybe mine is a fluke. Mine's a 3.5 , so maybe the tuning is different on the 2.7's? My friends 2014 eco stops at 100mph, but I can still cruise pass him. I'll get a tune eventually. Can't imagine what it'll do then.

One correction, it's actually 107 when using the digital Speedo. Wow, I posted this a while ago. :)
