At around 79k miles I had the torque converter replaced at the Ford dealership. RPM surging about 100-200 rpms going @ 70 mph. It has a 2 year warranty.
At 4500 miles later, It's starting to have the same issue again. RPM surge just a bit. This time I notice it at 55 mph. Not a lot but definitely starting to occur.
Lady at the dealership stated that she;s seen new converters bad out of the box from Ford.
Called around today to see trade in value and price of a new GMC Sierra. Well, appears I'm keeping the Ford.

Anyone know of a good quality after market torque converter?
Truck is 100% stock. Want the new converter to be just like the Ford converter but just not be a piece of sh1t.

You'd probably get a pretty penny for your truck on trade in, and then turn around and pay sticker for a new one. Plus those 5.3 are doodoo
Why not take it back and have them correct the issue?
I'm not sure on aftermarket converters for the 6spd, they're usually pretty good.
Only 18k for trade in.

Wow. That's crap.. I've seen my truck within 10k miles of mine for $22k, one as high as $29k but it was a platinum and I've got double the miles you do.
Probably better to have them fix it again, I can confirm new parts sometimes are faulty out of the box.
I probably will. First thing they said when they called me back was did i ever change the plugs. Seriously doubt the plugs went bad after 4500 miles from torque converter replacement. I'm waiting until its gets more noticeable. I fear if i bring it in now, they will keep it a week, charge me a diag fee and say they don't see a problem. Now that its under warranty, i fear they will find every other thing other than the torque converter to be a problem. Will see how long it takes for them to even call me back. I called on Thursday. So far no call back.

I may change them out just to make sure then. Has anyone done this themselves? Do i need to spray a lube to loosen them up or will they come out with no issues?

I will post once i have to plugs changed to see if improvement. Book says 100k but will do a tad early just to see. Watched a youtube video. Appears a bit of never seize is a good idea too. 11 lbs torque.

Plenty of tuned trucks run through Plugs every 20-30k miles. Definitely change them and make sure the new ones are gapped .030 or so.
Had the plugs changed. They were all dark so probably needed them changed. Did not fix the issue.
I need to do some more testing to isolate.
It appears to do it with the Air Conditioner running. With AC off it does not do it. This is both using cruise control at 55 mph.
I need to test again without using cruise control. I think i did and it did not do it all with AC on or off.
Perhaps a cruise control issue or alternator not pushing enough amps at slower speed. I never notice it using cruise at 75 mph.

Brought to dealership and now have a brand new torque converter with a year warranty. 86k miles and now on the 3rd converter. What gives? At this point I think I am going to go with an aftermarket one once this one starts having issues. Circle D. Has anyone used one of their converters?
