Bully Dog GT Tuner

I'm a new member to the forum but have read many, many helpful posts on selecting the Eco-Boost over the Dodge Eco-disel (yes...I considered it...laugh with me, not at me...)

My concern is that I added a Bully Dog GT Tuner to my 2014 King Rang 4x4 ecoboost and I'm not seeing the results that I want. It was on recommendation from a local and very reputable accessory/performance garage. I also added a custom Gibson dual exhaust with "NASCAR" tips (man does that thing rattle windows when I drive up!!!), a throttle body spacer, and cold air intake. I have toyed with the tuner on tow/efficiency, performance, and even switch back to stock to define my differences in gas mileage and overall feel. I get 2-3 mpg better when I use the tuner on performance or tow (but that may be my driving habits). But when I put my foot into the gas pedal, there doesn't seem to be any difference in acceleration.

Question: If I change to another tuner, is there any danger of it affecting my warranty? The Bully-Dog seems to be the safest, but also the least impressive. I'm not interested in racing anyone, but I still want my pony to run when I spur her.

In all honesty, what I the safest yet most effective performance enhancing tuner that i can run in my truck and not void the warranty? I know about warranty protection laws. And that a dealer is required to prove that an aftermarket part caused the damage, but with so many choices out there...I don't want to end up with a wrecked drive-train or blown engine because I was running it too hot.

So, if I'm not wanting to run a <5.0sec flat 0-60mph, then is the Bully Dog a good choice?

Thanks in advance for the opinions and advice, This forum seems to have a really knowledgeable crowd.

Actually bullydog is one of the least safe on the ecoboost. Buy a sct device and use one of the supported vendors on this site, Unleashed, five star, and LET. Any of these tuners will give you a better tune than bullydog and I can gaurantee you will feel the difference between tuned and stock.

Thanks for the reply savage07.

The garage that sold me the Bully Dog said that they liked it because it was legal in all 50 states. And also that Bully Dog wouldn't supply a tune for a stock truck that would tear it up. But after I spoke with the tech at BD the other day, he didn't seem very excited that I had their tuner plugged into an EcoBoost. So I get what you're saying.

Can I use the same wiring and connections that are already installed for the SCT? It looks like a standard HDMI plug, so I'm hoping "yes".

Ya you just buy a sct device from a vendor on this site and it will come with everything you need, the tuner will email you your prefered tunes you order and you will download them onto the device from the computer and then you plug the device to your pickup and load the tune. When you purchase a sct device from one of the vendors I mentioned it will come with 3 custom tunes.

Been running a Bullydog gt for couple years now. Bought it for monitoring engine , trans shifting, tire size for most part. Used the tow/ haul mode a bit. Never did get into the extreme mode. Its been rock steady for me. :D:beer::beer:

SCT or Diablosport device and a 91 or 93 octane custom tune will make a big difference.

Your other mods aren't going to amount to a whole lot of net power increase, but a custom tune might take advantage of the CAI and exhaust.

SCT tuner will come with everything you need for wiring. I know the X4 uses an HDMI, but I wouldn't rely on the two cords being exactly the same or cross compatible, I would just use the cord that comes with the tuner you plan on using.

Thanks Savage07, Neolise and norcal_ecoscrew. All the input is helpful.

@norcal_ecoscrew: I was actaully looking at the Diablosport first, so thanks for throwing a wrench in my indecision. Lol. The Diablosport 93 octane is a relatively new custom tune and they are making big claims. Has anyone had issues with that company or their tune?

A number of guys I have talked with and used the Diablo felt their "custom tunes" for the Diablo were not as good as SCT's tuners. If you WANT custom tunes, go with the tried & proven SCT device. Many more tuners doing custom tunes available for SCT too.

No problems with Diablosport that I remember hearing about.

Diablosport is just a platform, so is SCT. They both come with "built in" generic tunes known as canned tunes, and Diablosport is claiming they have the best 93 canned tune. With either of them you have the ability to load custom tunes that are tailored to your liking.

When you buy a SCT or Diablosport device from a tuner you usually get custom tunes included with them. Custom tunes are the way to go IMO, you will get the best performance with them and have a selection from any number of tuners to get custom tunes from later on if you want to try more.

EDIT: I should add that LET is the only custom tuner here that makes tunes for Diablosport devices and SCT, all the others use SCT only.

No such thing. One is the "shark" and the other is "dinner". And it is always the "shark's products and personal" who prevail.

Last quote then I'm done until we can get more information.

"Custom Tunes are created by one of Bully Dog / SCT's custom tuning dealers and are specifically designed for your vehicle and its modifications."

I sent Bullydog an email for curiosity's sake. I'll let you know their response.

Here's the response I got from Bully Dog on facebook today. Based on my Tuner guy Specialty Auto Repair Shop, Parts, Race Cars, Antiques: Birmingham, AL: Henson Performance who I would say is one of the top in the southeast and Bully Dogs response I'll be going with the mentioned items.

  • Jason Guthrie I'm was really considering the Bully Dog GT Platinum Gas tuner and Bully Dog RFI for my 2014 F-150 Ecoboost but I'm not reading anything good on the Ecoboost forums. People are saying go SCT and stay away from the Bully Dog that is the worst tuner for an EB even with the SCT merger?

    • Bully Dog Jason, the tuning is identical between Bully Dog and SCT at this point. All of their ford tuning has been imported on to the Bully Dog devices. Pick your favorite platform and enjoy!

    • Jason Guthrie That is exactly what I thought and my local tuner recommended the Bully Dog and has been custom tuning SCT for a longtime. So I put a lot of faith in his opinions and recommendations. So thank you for responding and reassuring me of your product. Going for baseline stock dyno pull Friday. Once I get my tuner and RFI I'll put up some numbers.

That's not at all what I have experienced with Bully Dog. And I have a Bully Dog GT programmer and have even registered it on their website with the update agent software. I also have a Bully Dog cold air intake. I'm a Bully Dog customer. I've spoken to 3 technicians on BD's customer service line and while all have been very courteous and polite, none have been able to help me with my EcoBoost. One even said that the custom tunes that were available for the ecoboost had not worked properly with "stock" trucks so they had stopped supporting tunes for the EcoBoost engine. The gas tuner they offer for the Ford f150 2011-2014 is a generic gas tune that applies to all engine sizes, even though you select 3.5L V6. The hp increase is somewhere at 30-35hp and they had no data on torque.

Bully Dog gave me the name of a local custom tuner, that when I called, told me that they only do a few in-house tunes and do not tune for Bully Dog. This dealer was also listed on BD's website. It has been disappointing to say the least. Not trashing BD because I have a grudge against them, I'm upset because I purchased their product and it has been lacking compared to others on the market. There must be some secret password that I'm not using in the "custom tuning" crowd because I am having zero luck with my BD.

This is my advice; Wait on Bully Dog to get fully seated with SCT or whoever before you buy their programmer for an ecoboost. Wait until they start posting updated EcoBoost canned tunes on their website. I don't think they have much to offer EcoBoost owners at this particular moment.

No, I think you are someone who bought a device and found out it wasn't as well supported as Bully Dog claimed it to be.

My FEAR is ... BD & SCT bring out a NEW device and both us BD & SCT users are "orphaned".

We will see I'm going Friday for some stock pulls on the dyno and I'll talk with my guy again. He has been in the business long enough that he knows what he's doing and he really knows his stuff when it comes to the SCT's. Yet he recommended the BD, I'm personally not doubting him when it comes to tuning any vehicle with whatever tuner be it SCT, Diablo, or BD. Maybe he knows that secret password?

Sure he's a SCT dealer, but if you go in his shop and tell him you want something else. Then that's what he gets you. I would be a fool to say he's not in it to make money, you got put pay the bills and put food on the table somehow. James is a top notch business man and knows his stuff, he tunes each car like it's his own and accepts each one as a challenge. No short cuts from him or shop, I know from personal experience he'll stay late to get your stuff done and get it done right. Hell he even makes house calls maybe I should call him Dr.Henson.

SCT = Numerous Tuners to chose from.

BD = Limited Tuners to chose from.

WOT is easy ... it's the part-throttle under numerous different conditions that is tough.

The part-throttle has ultimately been the determining factor of which tune to use, for me.

Just throwing my two cents in here. But I've been running the canned SCT tune for about 6 months now and I noticed quite a difference. I just received my MPT 93 performance tune this afternoon. It doesn't even compare at all to the canned tune. It's a completely new vehicle, I can't believe the value I got for $100. That's just my personal experience.

YES! That is pretty much the experience of everyone when they finally get a custom tune. I've used MPT 93 and I found it MUCH BETTER than the canned tune too.

Personally, I enjoyed testing and trying the other tunes from major tuners (Unleashed, LET etc) and comparing them. That is when you learn what you like about one tune and dislike on another. Then find a tuner who can take ALL of the features you like and make one awesome tune.

PS: I like the colour of your truck. Good choice.
