I have been contemplating going with a lower t stat.......... the change out isn't too bad mechanically right

No it’s quite easy. Drain cooling system. Drain cock is on the driver side. Pull the intake y pipe and it’s under the throttle body. 3 8 mm bolts. Bleed cooling system or vac fill it.

thanks my friend, sounds simple enough, spring project before the track and towing season

Appreciate the updates on this post with results after changing to the new oem thermostat. Hopefully mine will be here next week and I'll report my results as well here instead of starting a new thread.

As of now I'm seeing 210-235ish freeway driving unloaded and not towing with very very minor hills

Just realized this is the thread I meant to post my results on.

swapped out the factory thermostat for the updated part HL3Z-8575-B
Now coolant temps are pretty much consistently 195-205 usually riding right at 199.
Today I finally got to Test it on the mile long steeper grades up the mountain, before on the same grade I would see about 237° once I got to the top and let off the gas, today I only saw 215°

For whatever reason, the PID I chose to display on my BDX tuner was coolant temp in Celsius, not F. I became desensitized to the true coolant temps by adjusting to thinking that 100C was totally normal (I mean, it is).

Towing my camper back south a couple days ago in 85 degree, humid air, with 3 kayaks on the bed rack - at 75 mph with air conditioning on (probably sustained 90-120 HP load!?!), the engine stayed in the 101-106 C range. I didn't like the 106 number, but it was rare, usually on long uphill grades. More commonly 103-104 C (= 217 to 219 F). I'm pretty ok with that, but do have the 190F t-stat on the shelf still.

This truck kicks arse.

I installed another 180* over the weekend and I guess I may have a bad water pump (no leaking yet) or something (maybe that my coolant has 125k miles?) because while it ran 2-3 degrees cooler at 70 for every 5 mph I would go faster the temp would rise a few degrees and at 85 I was still running around 216*. Just cruising at 55 or below it sits at a comfortable 197-ish.

I did notice when I changed the thermostat then started the truck I had a horrible noise from a pulley. I couldn't narrow down which one though and it only did it for about 30 seconds on the initial start then never again. Guess before I make my annual trip to Colorado for hunting, and it cools off here, I'll drain it and pull the waterpump.

The children of the Engineers who designed the IWE are, per conspiracy theories, responsible for the Ford part number change control process…

My 180 thermostat ends in "BB" but first part is different.

That's the one I installed last weekend. Didn't help when speeds were 75+.
I think I may have a pump issue because under 70 it's as cool as expected and when doing under 50 it never gets to 195°.

Put a T-stat on order today. Linky below. I’ll pick up some fresh fluid locally. I have been running between 215 and 220 unloaded at interstate speeds.
