there was some discussion (i dont' think this thread) that the TSB only applies to USA trucks for some reason. the TSB definitely says its covered under emissions warranty which in the US is 80k miles.

They are saying that the tsb does not go over and above factory warranty and only covered parts in the emission warranty list are covered apparently you can read this two ways.

Eligible Under Provisions Of New Vehicle Limited Warranty Coverage And Emissions Warranty Coverage.
Warranty/ESP coverage limits/policies/prior approvals are not altered by a TSB. Warranty/ESP coverage limits are determined by the identified causal part and verified using the OASIS part coverage tool

This is what they say is covered nothing more.
Under the Emissions Performance Warranty, Ford Motor Company provides coverage, including labor and diagnosis, for 8 years or 80,000 miles (whichever occurs first) for the following emissions parts.

  • Catalytic Converter
  • Electronic Emissions Control Unit (ECU)
  • Onboard Emissions Diagnostic Devices
Sorry the the bad cut and paste the iPhone isn't ideal for this

Just looking for peoples options on my situation. The truck is a 2012 ecoboost with 150,000km on it. So the dealer did a timing chain replacement back in February (138,000 km) on a the truck, they basically did the old tsb, no cam phasers. Now the truck is making a real loud diesel like tick on cold starts, it seems to go away after it's warm. Do we basically have to tear it apart again and replace everything including the phasers now? Seems like they should have done the proper tsb the first time considering it had been out for 6 months.

The first time the chain was replaced the truck had lost power and threw a code, that's when they said it needed a chain. I have the option to buy out the lease for a pretty attractive price (company truck), not sure what to do.

I would not buy that truck out - let it go with its issues. Remember these problems as you contemplate what vehicle to get next.

I would let it go or buy a new engine for it when the old one dies. Don't waste money on that engine.

I know it'll probably be trouble, do you think I could just do the phasers now? I know most of the cost is the labour but just wondering if the chain would have stretched much already. Is there typically any warranty on this type of work?

I haven't tried talking to the dealership or anything yet but I'm sure they'll just say the phasers were fine before even though we both know they should have been replaced since based on my reading they're more the cause of the stretch than a symptom.

In the US all ford done work is covered by 2 years 24k miles parts and labor - I don't know if that applies in CA though or if it is on TSB work that has already been done

Thats on work done outside of warranty.

So I heard a recording of the truck being started this morning (cold start after sitting overnight), the tick lasts about 30-40 seconds then the truck sounds fairly normal. I assume this is the cam phasers before they get lubricated.

Maybe it is just the video, but that doesn't sound like timing chain or phaser related. It could just be how my phone played it but it sounds like your truck just idles quieter but the noise is still there. Am I hearing it wrong?
It is still kind of there, it sounds like there is still a tick. I thought it might be a exhaust leak but I think it only makes the loud noise after an sitting for several hours. I don't drive the truck on a regular basis, I only drive now an then for work so I don't know.
Looking back on a failed cam phaser video I viewed previously it definitely doesn't sound like that, but that cam phaser had basically blown up. This is that video:

Actually I just listened to the video a few times again and you can definitely hear the timing chain noise at the 7-8 second mark when the truck first starts. The sound is muffled by whatever the other noise is (cam phasers/exhaust leak/injectors) but the typical timing chain noise is there.

To me, it sounds like exhaust leak mainly.

This is the chain rattle sound.
