I wouldn't jump too far ahead, but I agree with you and would start by taking off one or both valve covers and start by having a peak. Super easy job. It sounds like the there maybe something going on with the valve train and possibly some piston slap or rod knock.

No matter what the diagnosis.

DO NOT DRIVE IT!

It is always a plus when a piston or rod isn't hanging out the side of the block.

Start by taking your intake off, and driver side valve cover. This is about 2 hours of work maybe 2-1/2 realistically.

newest TSB states 9.2 hours of labor + parts. even at $120/hr shop rate thats only $1104 + parts.
What is the latest TSB #? It is the one where both chains and phasers are replaced, right?

TSB 16-0027 supersedes TSB 15-0131

"Replace all for VCT units... and timing chain" - 9.2 hours for model years 11-14 and 9.0 hours for 15

This should apply to all 3.5 ecoboost engines, right?

I have 2014 phasers and 2016 phasers anyone know the difference? I have had em both apart and they are the same. Maybe hardening?

So you don't hear the grinding noise at the 7-8 second mark? I know it's hard to hear because of the noise from the exhaust leak.
Hearing it again in quiet environment, I can now hear the chain rattle at the very beginning, exhaust leak, then at 32s when exhaust leak settles, I can hear some knocking as well.
Not sounding healthy.

Thanks for the reply. Looks like I should expect and engine swap if I buy I guess.

If the truck is under $10k it might be worth it. A long block is $4K plus install.

would this TSB work for a truck that is just out of warranty? or would the client have to pay out of pocket.

So I have the dreaded p0016 after pulling the codes when the CEL came on this weekend. Did some googling and found all kinds of "fun" posts around this issue. I have a 2013 ecoboost FX4 with all the bells and whistles, barely three years old and now this. I drive highway 60 miles per day for work plus several long trips for my son who plays travel hockey, so current mileage is a hair over 78k.

Now I have heard this 2-7 second rattle for the past two years, never thought anything of it since it goes away and engine has been strong. If I only would have googled I would have taken the truck in right away for the TSB under the power train warranty 2 years ago. How convenient, now when the timing chain finally gets so stretched and throws an error code it is out of warranty. There has always been a lot of soot on the tail pipe and gas mileage has consistently been around 14 when it should be closer to 20 on highway, this all makes perfect sense now per all the posts I've been reading about the timing chain symptoms

Truck has been at the dealer since Monday, first they only wanted to replace chain and one phaser, I politely informed them of TSB 16-0027 which recommends replacement of all 4 phasers along with chain. They eventually agreed that this made sense but of course all on my dime, $2700 with no guarantee it won't blow up on the way home from the shop. I asked if there was any help due to this being such a widespread issue, they said no assistance is available. I'm pretty torn, I have always bought ford vehicles but this one is really starting to leave a sour taste.

What really gets me is that several have claimed the 8/80k emissions warranty will cover this. Is anyone able to confirm that they had TSB 16-0027 performed under the emissions warranty?

I called Ford customer service and they opened a case and escalated to my dealers service manager, no return phone call so I finally stopped by today and he gave me the run around, website is down, will check again tomorrow. I guess I will be eating lots of lunches by my friendly ford dealer so I can continue to stop by and find out status since the phones seem to be broken there now, they worked great when I was paying.

If anyone can provide some feedback on how you resolved this issue on trucks outside the 60k power train warranty I would like to hear.

above is almost my same story but mine never threw the 0016 code. I bought my 2011 used with 67K miles from a dealer.
truck at dealer now due to no power won't drive. (will crank and showing misfires and bad cam postiion sensor)
after dealer looks it over and tells me what they find/suggest, i'll post here. I'm preparing myself for new reman. engine. not happy with ecoboost.
i routinely buy slightly used vehicles and drive them over 300K no problems with routine maintenance.
I will post how I proceed to fix since i'm outside any warranty also

Mine has 63k on it and has been making noise for quite some time. It recently got bad enough that I decided to read up on it. Lucky me I'm 3k out of warranty. For those that have been pimping the 80 k emissions warranty I wish you'd come back and give us details. The guy I talked to sounded like he knew his information but who knows. Anyway, he said lubricated parts are covered to 60k and only electronic emissions parts are covered to 80. PC and sensors and such.

So the saga continues, after leaving a message this morning the service manager finally returned my call at 1:00 today. Apparently FORD website servers all decided to die this week since my service manager is claiming that the FORD case website is still down again today. Maybe if this was 2000 I might believe this excuse but in this day and age I would find it hard to believe that any critical site would be down more than a couple of hours.

Oh well, service manger said he has a call into FORD to check on case status, if he hears something he will call me back later today. Otherwise I owe him a call in the morning to kick things off again. I'm not being disrespectful but feel that if I'm not making at least one call a day on this it will easily get buried and conveniently forgotten until I make a call again. Feels like the run-around is just part of the process to see if you qualify for any type of warranty costs by being persistent.

I will continue to update on a daily basis here until this is resolved, happy reading everyone!

I responded to your PMs a little while ago. :)

Hi buzz,

Have you taken your truck by the dealer yet? Let me know if you decide to do so.

Rachel

Thanks for the quick reply and getting me in touch with the regional manager!

Looking forward to talking with them tomorrow and seeing what options are available to address this widespread issue for us unlucky folks who have the startup clicking symptoms in warranty but don't get any CEL codes that make us check this out until after the power train warranty runs out. I have had the startup symptom since I had 45k on this vehicle, never thought this was a warning sign of major issues, figured it was normal considering it goes away after a few seconds and no noticeable engine impacts.

Hopefully there is a reasonable option out there to resolve.

I plan on it but was advised to wait til Tuesday as the holiday weekend. It isn't too bad so long as I floor the throttle on first start to get oil moving before start up. If I forget though it sounds real bad. Thx for the reply.

It's my pleasure, Tjs157. Hopefully we can get this resolved. :)

You got it, buzz! Keep me posted if you get in on Tuesday. Send over a PM with your full name, best contact number, VIN, and servicing dealer; I'll check out available options.
