I took the time to reread this whole thread and I can't help but notice these poor Ford PR people are pretty much helpless in what they can do for us. I have yet to see anyone say the only reason their truck is repaired is thanks to them. They jump in and give us hope only to be disappointed when we waste our time following their recommendations. At least that's been my experience. How many people have posted the TSB's stating this is an emissions coverage to 80k and not one reply from these people on the issue with any substance. You folks have a tough job. I am sure your heart is in the right place wanting to help but knowing all you really offer is feel good words must suck. I for one am disappointed in the position Ford puts you and the customer in trying to save face and money.

Timing issues directly relate to emissions. Is there anyone in Cali that can take this to ARB and force the issue? Maybe when they get done with VW they will look into this since it seems to be an ongoing issue with phasers across multiple motors.

Well just got my truck back from the dealership yesterday, was in the shop about 4 days, they replaced the timing chain and phaser cams. So far no rattle on start up, performance seems unchanged. Hoping this was a permanent fix for the issue and I wont have to be back in the dealership any time soon!

Going on a year since the TSB, no issues at all.

Seems like a lot of motors I see with timing chain issues that I have been sent pictures of or were discussed with me tend to look like this. Probably a large part of people who do not take care of their trucks maintenance.

In defense I do know that some issues happen with people who are anal with OCI and take great care of their trucks. I just think you never really know since we are on the old innerweb

I was speaking to the guys in the service department at one of the largest dealers in NJ and largest selling servicing in country. I know these guys well so they don't BS me. They have performed a total of 15 timing chain TSB, or timing chain replacements since the F150 has had an ecoboost motor in it.

So that's 15 total. Not bad

I get confused when people send pictures of this and say this is normal and they used amsoil every 5,000 miles with the truck at 63,000 miles. I mean come on really

Common sense should be more common

Agreed, I have seen a lot of engines as a Tech with Ford and it was always fun when you ask to see the maintenance records and the customer says, "I change my own oil every 3K miles"...
Sorry to tell you but your motor tells me another story...

This is EXACTLY what my brand new 2016 Lincoln MKX 2.7 Ecoboost is doing at the 500 mile mark!

At 500 miles you most certainly got one of the few bad ones. But your at 500 miles. Go to the dealer and get a new motor, there won't be Any issue and perhaps you can get out of it. I wouldn't even be worried if this happened and was this brand new. You won't have any issue

I've had an appointment for over a week. It's scheduled to go in Monday evening (the 22nd) so they can cold start it Tuesday morning. Really though, that won't be necessary, it makes this sound after sitting for just 30 minutes or less. I seriously doubt they will drop a new motor in it though, to me, it seems to be the same issue that the 3.5 eb motor has, addressed by TSB 16-0027. They will likely just replace the phaser, and not even touch the timing chain. The last thing I want to hear is "that is normal".

I have pulled apart phasers from 2013, 2014, and 2016 model years. I found what I believe is the cause. There is zero differences in the phasers unless some hardening or alloy characteristics were changed. They have the same part number as well and engineering numbers. Timing chain will certainly be replaced as and probably some other parts. I will try to take a video of what I found on two of the phasers later today

The new revision phasers were released this year, and I believe will be used in the Gen 2 engines.

I had mine done at 18k miles, with full synthetic used the entire time. I've had 0 issues since the new ones were installed, and I'll be checking them in November when the engine is built.

Same here no issues in the past year since the phasers were changed last September

You should not expect another failure soon, correct? If you do see a failure, it may be another 30k - 40k down the line.

I doubt it'll see one at all.

You won't see it fail again from what I found. Phasers on the 2016 fully updated assembly use the same part number as the 2014. They are fine. I'll take pictures. It casting or some type of debris that gets into them. It is something non magnetic, and only in a few of the passages

Common sense should be more common

I'm pretty sure a year or more ago someone who did the job his self out of warranty found that the screens in the oil passages to the phasers were full of casting debris which clogged the oil and thus stopped initial start up oil flow to the phaser.

Here is the same phaser from a 2014. The only difference between these images is that it I moved the internal parts simulating how it moved when the motor is running. You can see when in the first position, it is clean, but when it is in the second position, there is large amounts of particle debris inside the "chambers or galleys"

I believe this is casting debris from new start up on new engine assembly. I also believe there is a lot of burrs on the block, especially on the edges of the cylinder block deck surface.

I should note the particles are non magnetic.

Seems like ford needs to put more time into QA/QC inspection and block prep.

rbrown - those pics are a bit fuzzy any chance you could try and re-take a bit more in focus?
for those of us suffering the occasional rattle problem but in the likely spot of having to cover the work (or do the work) ourselves, knowing what we're looking for to confirm diagnosis would be really helpful.

Will do when I get home later.
