Seems like ford needs to put more time into QA/QC inspection and block prep.
The block is actually very nice, and it is definitely better than a lot of them on the OE level. These burs are standard on the any OE level, and it is more a problem with the design of the part. They should be capable IMO of some either break in or other typical particles from wear pass through them. Remember the average customer isn't going to do things the same as an enthusiast. Most people go the 10,000 miles for their OCI.

I swear I use amsoil every 5000 miles. Yeah..ok

Common sense should be more common

This whole timing chain thing is so disheartening. I had an 08 5.4 with 85k on it that I traded because of the rattle and the #9 torrington bearing in the tranny was shot so basically I needed a new tranny and front end engine rebuild on a truck that was well taken care of for 85k measly miles. Now I have a 13 EB and I see this. I am really starting to wonder what happened to Quality is job 1!!. My Grandfather and Father were both Ford factory workers and I have always tried to stay loyal to the brand but my last 3 were trash and I hope this EB doesn't follow in the same path. I had a 98 Explorer with the HO V6 that had all sorts of timing chain and cam issues if I remember. I had an 03 Explorer with a 4.6 which was fine but numerous other issues with it including a complete differential failure at 70K, then my 08 150. Prior to those I had good ones including a 96 F150, 94 Ranger, and my first buy an 84 F150 that gave me 16 years of pretty reliable service. My current 13 F150 has been sitting at Ford for nearly 3 weeks now with a BOV that has gone crazy opening and closing every 5-10 seconds and they do not know what is causing it.

I feel your pain. Last October I bought a used 2013 F150 Platinum Screw 4x4 with the 3.5 EB, Max Towing and 3.73 rear. We use it to tow a travel trailer. It only had 16K miles on it and now after a couple of extended travel trailer trips out West it has almost 34K miles. So far, no timing chain rattles, but a few weeks ago it had to have the electronic throttle body replaced because twice, while driving down the road and one of those with the TT in tow, it lost power and got the big wrench showing on the driver display. Turning it off and restarting cleared the problem each time. Fortunately, I bought an extended service plan and my local Ford dealer fixed the problem in one day. I get free oil and filter changes every 5K miles and religiously get them, but I still worry a little bit about getting the timing chain/phaser problem down the road on a RV trip. I do love the truck. If it goes south I can see F250 or 350 with a diesel in my future. LOL

That's the condensation doing that, more than likely. Were you pushing high boost or passing when it happened?

The issue seems widespread, because you're on a forum. Typically, this is the first place people come with their problems.

There's some unlucky ones that have seen this issue (myself included), but there are also thousands of trucks well past 100k without issue. In my experience, most have had the issue early on. If you're past 20-30k without issue, I would put worry about it.

I guess lesson for ecoboost owners - only own with a warranty, and get something else when warranty expires.

You're talking about an isolated issue in the first generation of motor. Not that big of a deal.

Nope. Just driving down the road the first time and the second time was doing about 30 mph in town.

Damn, quite possible that it was a TB issue. I've only heard of 2-3 failing on here.

They pulled a code the second time it happened (fortunately I was only a mile from my Ford dealer and went straight there) that pointed at the TB they said. They also updated the firmware or software for the BCM.
The first time it occurred we were doing 65 mph towing our travel trailer east on I-10 in Florida and were over 300 miles from home, so I guess whatever code was thrown was cycled out. I now carry a code reader in the truck for use if any problems pop up, so I can record any codes to give a dealer.
The BCM thing was covered by warranty and the TB was covered by the ESP I bought a few months ago. It was the first time in about 50 years of vehicle ownership I've purchased a ESP, but after reading this and other forums about problems and since my Platinum 4x4 has so many bells and whistles that could break I decided to fork out the BIG bucks to buy the ESP. The truck is covered for just about everything until 100K miles or 2021, whichever comes first. [emoji3]

In my case, it's the 2nd gen 2.7 Ecoboost with the phaser failure, and at only 500 miles !! The thing didn't make it through the second week of ownership. And the noise, as was told to me, is not the chain slapping, it's the phaser's internals, metal to metal, slapping back and forth, until it fills with oil.

Is the dealer stepping up to fix it? The bad thing about mass production is that the likelihood of receiving a faulty part is increased. It's unfortunate, but Ford should step in to take care of you.

No engine is without issues. No mass produced unit is without faulty units slipping through. Just ask all of those 2014 C7 owners...

My point is this, the issue has been addressed by ford, and should not be present in the 2nd generation of the 3.5L ecoboost. As far as the 2.7L goes, this is also a first gen engine... It's not modeled after the 3.5, there are many differences. Whether or not this will affect them, I do not know. It's too new of an engine to tell at this point.

Don't know yet, I have had a service appointment scheduled for a week. Supposed to drop car off this evening, and they are supposed to look at it tomorrow. Whether they do anything or not, is my worry. This car had a $64k sticker, and was a special order, picked up not 3 weeks ago. But, either way, it no longer feels like a special ordered, new car. :(

Heard the rattle for the first time this morning . Called the dealer and he said they would fix the chain without the service light on. The wait time for them to look at the truck is a week once dropped off. Warranty only covers a rental for 5 days, then im responsible for the cost after that. Trying to hold out for the wait time to go down , " they are busier than normal right now"

Any guessimate how long the chain will hold out before failure?

2012 66,500 miles screw.

Most of the drivers that have had this issue have driven for thousands of miles (if not tens of thousands of miles) from the first time they noticed the rattle.

I drove around 5 thousand miles after mine started. No real issues, but I took it easy just in case.

When I brought it in, they replicated it after allowing to sit overnight, and ordered the parts.

You do know that the timing chain issue and cam phaser are two separate issues, right? If you have the cold start rattle, then your PHASERS need changed, NOT the chains.

Actually smart ass the two are very related. That's why the tsb calls for the timing chain to be replaced with the phasers.
