Regardless of which issue occurs, they replace the phasers, chains, sprockets, and hardware.

Does anyone know if there is a TSB for the 3.5 EB in a '13 Flex. I got the rattle at 70k and check engine light at 72k and engine dies at idle. I've been to 2 dealers. One says they've never seen an Eco Boost problem of any kind, and the other said it's common but the warranty ran out at 36k and Ford refuses to help for same reason. I've been driving Fords all my life (215k on my '97 5.4 Lariat and going strong) but this EB might be my last. I'd love some direction if anyone has any.

Tsbs aren't covered outside of warranty anyhow.

I've been having the same issue - '13 EB F150 (does not happen with my '13 EB Flex...). My driveway has a bit of an incline - not much. When I back into the driveway, so the rear is up and nose down, and the truck sits overnight. The next cold start will result in this sound but much louder. When I park nose up / tail down the rattle is not existent. It's much worse since I've used a mobil1 oil filter, but it still occurs even with a Purolater/Ford MC filter. Dealer told me it was "normal". I need to find the recording I took of it and post - or I'll just take another one since it happens everyday.

This does not happen in my Flex - same filter, etc. Any thoughts?

that's interesting that level was seems to make an issue. I park mine nose up in the driveway and after hearing it a dozen or so times I haven't heard it in 4-5 months now and 10k miles. I might try parking it "downhill" and see if it makes it more reproducable :/

I think filter plays a big role too. I'm trying to find the filter with the best back-flo prevention valve. So far it's purolater one full syn. NAPA gold used to work great on other cars I've owned (1996 Maxima inparticular) so that'll be next. Next is to relocate the oil filter because that IS a bad design....

What I don't understand is how two different vehicles having the same motor react differently in this scenario.

Got nothing to do with the filter. I originally thought that too almost 1.5 years ago when it first happened to my truck. It is a plugged up phaser and oil passage in the top end of the motor.

I have a 2013 F150 Platinum Screw 4x4 3.5 EB and I am really curious about something. My EB has 34K on it and has not experienced this problem so far. How do those of who have the problem drive your trucks? By that I mean (and meaning no disrespect) do you frequently "hot rod" them, pushing the performance to the limit or do you baby them, so to speak, when you drive? I guess you could say I baby mine, don't stick my foot in it, etc.

I can't really speak from experience or necessarily respond about how it relates to this particular issue, but after hanging around for a while, it seems these motors prefer to be driven hard. And actually tend to give better service. (Within reason of course)

It has nothing to do with how it is driven. RYAN posted pictures showing the debris in the phasers. There is nothing you can do to prevent it short of pulling them and fully cleaning them now before it happens.

And before it in turn wears out the timing chain.

The ones that eventually have the problem.

Some are worse than others. Some were so bad they lead to really bad timing on bank 1 with a p0016 code.

Some guys are still driving the truck with the noise and no issues to the overall timing system. MAPLEDUCKSLAYER over on f150forum comes to mind.

they will all get it - be prepared for the $3k bill.
Eh, bit of a butt hurt? Not all will get this, there are thousands of high mileage eco's without a problem. Just because you drew an unlucky straw doesn't give you the right to spew misinformation to everyone else. Put some Boudreaux's butt paste on that painful posterior, and carry on with your 6.2.

Fortunately, if my EB succumbs to this problem my ESP will cover it. This the first vehicle I've ever bought an ESP, but after reading about this and other problems and after I realized that my Platinum has so many bells and whistles that could fail I went back and bought one. Good thing, too, as it's already paid for replacing the electronic throttle body that was not covered under the three year or 60k warranty.
