After catching up on this thread, it sounds like (if you know what you're doing-i don't) honestly, at $750, you're better off doing this yourself. Sounds like Ford will do a bare minimum. If you're in there yourself, you can replace other things that you see, in your opinion, need it while you're in there.

Looks like I will be doing the timing chain repair myself in a week or two, depending on when all the parts get here. My victim is a 2011 crewcab 4x4, almost 100,000 miles, that I owned since new. I'm planning on replacing everything behind the timing cover, including the water pump. The truck has been pretty good to me, other than the misfire issue (replaced plugs, and then plugs and coils) and this timing chain issue. The only mods are, aftermarket down pipes, straight thru exhaust, leveling kit, 35 inch Toyos MTs. Truck is driven hard, when I'm behind the wheel, and driven very easy when my fiance' is using it. By hard, I mean, street racing anyone willing, and on the speed limiter when on the highway.

Started ordering parts today, thru Quirk Parts.com, they sent me a email saying that PART AT4Z-6K255-A IS UNAVAILABLE through the manufacturer (Ford) which happens to be the tension arm, for the main chain. Any ideas were I should look to get one of those? lol

Also I have a question on the [h=1]ACTUATOR - 2011 FORD F-150 (AT4Z6C525B)[/h]and
[h=1]ACTUATOR - 2011 FORD F-150 (AT4Z6256B)[/h]can I disassembly my stock ones and clean them? Or just bite the bullet and pay 420.00 + for 4 new ones?

New to the forum... First post...

I've got a 2013 F-150 Limited that I absolutely love! I bought it new and have had the oil changed full syn every 5k miles. Last week it started giving me the start up rattle. Upon the second occurrence I started googling and came across the tsb 16-0027. I took it to the stealership day before yesterday with 64,500 miles on the clock. As of yesterday, Ford has declined to participate in the cost of repair.

So, I'm looking at a roughly $3,000 engine repair on a vehicle with relatively low mileage. I've owned three Ford vehicles personally and opted for Ford trucks and vans for my company's fleet. To say I am disappointed in Ford's handling of what seems to be an obvious design flaw would be an understatement. I'm not going to go full retard yet as I have opened a case personally and am awaiting a final decision. Does anyone think this will eventually end up being a recall issue?

No it won't end up being a recall issue as it isn't safety related. Ford never recalled the hundreds of thousands of 5.4s with phaser issues either.
In your situation I would just keep feeding it Synthetic oil and continue to change at 5K. It can't get worse than it is unless the chain starts wearing out really bad at which point you will start to get code P0016 for timing being out.

As you have obviously read through this thread many people have done the jobs themselves now without issue for under $1k.

But as stated unless you start getting drive-ability issues like p0016 or really bad fuel mileage I wouldn't even worry about it.

I drove mine for over a year making the noise (did have it replaced under warranty though after 15-031 TSB came out.) without any adverse issue to my truck or MPG. Tech also said my chain wasn't severely worn like some of the chains seen from peoples trucks who have the P0016 code pop up.

I can't imagine running the vehicle with all that metal on metal at start up. Can't be good for the long term life of the engine. And, there's no way I'm gonna tackle a 15 hour repair; way beyond my comfort level. I've been a big Ford fan for many years, but this is testing my loyalty. You shouldn't have to endure a $3,000 repair on a $6,000 engine at 64k when it has been meticulously maintained and babied... Just my $0.02

Well then either shell out the money or ditch the truck whining here won't fix it for you. You're out of warranty in the laws eyes Fords obligation to you is up.

Alright guys, new to the forum. Just bought a 2013 Lariat SuperCrew with the Ecoboost. Absolutely love the truck. Had it about two weeks. Noticed the rattle on startup and sreally don't know if it just started or I just noticed it. I am the 3rd owner, bought it from a dealership my brother and dad work at that had it traded in and got a great deal on it. Before I bought it, it had a cylinder head temp sensor light that was replaced and I've driven it around 600 miles with no issue. I know dad and them changed the oil and didn't put a motorcraft filter on it. Since I got it, I have been averaging around 13.4 mpg around town. It is a 4x4 with stock tires. I know I am not going to get super mileage, but expected better than this. I am pretty sure the plugs have never been replaced so plan on doing that. I figured that could be part of the problem, but wondering if this cam phaser thing is playing a part. I got a 30 day warranty on the truck, and am wondering if I should wash my hands of this truck. I haven't even made a payment on it yet. Just wondering if this is a huge deal. I have read alot of what I find to be poor information on the problem.

as a 2013 lariat owner with intermittent rattle, if you can get your money back no questions asked then i def would. it's $750 parts bare min to fix if you do the work yourself and about 3k to have a dealer do it out of warranty. for $3k you can probably find another truck without the issue to even worry about.

I know this issue is caused by oil deprivation on startup, but what is the end result of this. After the motor is warm and you restart it I never hear it. Is the startup rattle causing excessive wear that will show itself later on?

$750 is like absolute bare bones on the parts needed.

Have an oil analysis done. If not wanting to do an oil change go to local auto parts store, get a fluid extractor to pull oil from dipstick hole. Put about 4OZ in a dry, clean water bottle. Bag it, box it, and go to black stone labs website, pay for the analysis and print the form. Fill it out put in the box, send FedEx or ups not USPS.

You will know what your wear is in the motor. They can turn around a sample as fast as you send it.

I'm just worried about it long term. I really like the truck and the features. It drives great and I've had no issues with it other than the SYNC system acting up. Just worried this is gonna be a problem down the road and that the reason I got this truck was to not have to worry about fixing things.

It completely destroys the phasers and timing chain eventually.

Can someone post the torque numbers for the cam phaser bolts, and the crankshaft bolt? Also what have you guys been using to seal the front cover back to the block and head mating surface? Blue RTV? Or.....

TA-357
or permatex ultrablack

Torque spec on phaser bolts:

1step to 30ft/lbs
2step loosen 1 full turn
3step to 18ft/lbs
4step TTY 180 degrees in one shot preferably

Crank bolt

1step 89 ft/lbs
2step loosen 1 full turn
3step 37ft/lbs
4step TTY 90 degrees in one shot preferably

My 2012 has this rattle after it sits for a couple days.
It's at 175,000 now so I will probably just wait for it to blow up and then build the engine with more HP.

Although I might get bored and pull the heads to have them cleaned and might as well do the chain while I am in.
Depends on what kind of free time I have this spring.
