Ford F150 3.5L Ecoboost Rattle Upon Start Up- Timing Chain Stretch Issues TSB

Ok so some may know about this some may not but it is something that is coming on strong with many showings at dealerships across America. So as most know it is timing chains that are prematurely stretching causing this startup noise. The news is that there is updated parts out there to address this and Ford now has a TSB on this issue formally admitting to it being a common problem. I go over it all in this video. There is also a link to just how it sounds in the description of the video on youtube. Hopefully more dealers will be willing to dive into the engine with some guidance from Ford now.

I am new here on the forums. Noticed the start up rattle a while ago on my 2013 F150 ecoboost. Now it happens more frequently. No check engine codes. Oil changes regular and at local Ford dealer. I have read over all the posts on this issue and was hoping for help on a couple of questions. Is this fix covered by the emissions warranty? The way I read the TSB maybe? But I have seen both answers on here.

My truck has 63000 miles on it, no factory warranty, and extended was up at 60,000. Can I still buy a Ford Protect ESP? If so, who do you use and what is a good price?

Thanks for your help!

63,000?

Go figure. That's not good news unfortunately. You'll need to get it addressed and have it done properly. No cut corners.

Others have documented this to be in the $2500-2800 range, there abouts.

New user here, In 2012 I bought an f150 with ecoboost and 40k in I got the dreaded rattle and had it repaired, then at 60k it started again but this time i traded it in for a 2017. Im at 20k this time and it starts making the rattle AGAIN! This morning i got a call from the dealership saying the cam phasers caused an issue and they told me there is an ssm on the issue under #47394. They will be replacing the short block but keeping the head and some other parts. He didnt give me any paperwork and said there wouldnt be any until the back ordered parts come in. Originally he told me it was a TSB from ford but when I went in to get my truck I asked him for the TSB number so I could look it up and get informed about it, he tried to look it up and said its actually an SSM#47394 as listed above. Does anyone know the success rate of this repair or should I bail on this truck after its fixed?

Oh my fricking g@d lol Gheeezis. I'm not laughing at you I'm laughing because that is the exact kind of luck I have and is making me really shy away from a 2019 3.5 EcoBoost and thinking really hard about a 2019 5.0. Or something completely different.

I couldn't even imagine how pissed at myself I'd be if I got another EcoBoost and had issues after all I went through with my old POS 2013 3.5.

Damn

I cannot find any information on SSM 47394. Does anyone know what this SSM is all about? I think there are many other 2nd gen 3.5 eco owners with the same issue and would like to know about SSM 47394.

Here is what I have found for SSM 47394;

SSM 47394 – 2013-2018 F-150, 2015-2018 Transit/Expedition, 2015-2017 Navigator – 3.5L EcoBoost – Engine Tick Type Noise From Cylinder Block Some 2013-2018 F-150, 2015-2018 Transit/Expedition, and 2015-2017 Navigator vehicles equipped with a 3.5L EcoBoost engine with greater than 20,000 miles may exhibit a tick type noise from the cylinder block area.
This noise may be caused by a cracked piston skirt.
The noise can be isolated to a cylinder using a stethoscope or other suitable listening device.
Canceling the affected cylinder will reduce or eliminate the noise.
If the noise is isolated to a specific cylinder, it is recommended to replace the short block.
If the noise cannot be isolated using the methods described, refer to the Workshop Manual (WSM) for diagnosis.
A cracked piston skirt does not result in metal contamination of the engine or any related cylinder head damage.
Prior approval for short block replacement is not required under new vehicle limited warranty coverage.

You're feeding the troll in me.

I love the 3.5 Ecoboost powerplant. It's amazing. But it comes with pistons that are just not robust enough for the mission.

It's crazy that the Gen2 (non Raptor) didn't get pistons that would be considered a proper upgrade-response to the Gen1 history.

Just doesn't make sense.

Exactly.

Broken piston skirt VS the infamous timing chain rattle.
Both suck though. :)

I am in need of a new engine on mine. It is 2012 with 72k miles. I had it parked on an incline for a few days while out of town and now I am told a new engine is needed because my chain broke off. Anyone else ever heard of this issue or have this happen.

#998 ·
If you are thinking you Have an ongoing tick you need to rip open your oil filter and check the media for metal.

That’s my problem, it is very intermittent. Mostly on cold starts but not always, and will go away between 10-30 seconds. It also won’t start until the truck drops off high idle after starting cold. From the information posted above there won’t be anything in the oil or filter.

Ryan so if my Gen 1 ever blows up, what are my options for new power to swap in? [emoji12]

I don’t have $60k to be looking at a ‘19 F150

Have we seen a single 2.7 fail yet due to being tuned?

We've seen hundreds of 3.5s....

2.7's are the rest-easy Twin Turbos. They've proven to be Stout and reliable, in my opinion.

Ryan has built a lot of motors other than 3.5 Ecoboost. In fact, when I bought that 370Z he taught me a lot about the kinship of that motor and our 3.5's. (He's been under the hood on that motor too.
I'd let him build me any motor I wanted built with his attention to detail.

I did shoo him away of ANY talk about the Miata. I had to explain that power would RUIN that little roadster for me. :)

One thing about an RMB Motor is He doesn't farm it out. He touches every nut bolt washer.

^ Agreed Snake. There is a lot of reported doom and gloom with the 3.5L on the forums but there are a million of these things running around without issues. You gotta know that many of those same trucks have owners that do nothing to go out of their way to take care of the truck.

Would the issue(s) that cause the timing chain stretch and the need for the VCT units(and other parts) needing to be replaced lead to a sludge build up in the valve areas? I've got a '14 F150 with the 3.5l and the start up rattle which I've had for about a year. It's always had the rattle since the day I bought it(at a Ford dealer) and didn't realize the rattle wasn't normal. Couple days ago, it threw a P012 code and had another issue so since I had the EDP, I took it in to a dealer(different than where I bought it). They did diagnostics and they pulled a valve cover and found a bad sludge problem. They are stating I need a new engine and because of the sludge, are saying it wasn't maintained properly and won't even submit it to Ford for warranty. I get the feeling I'm screwed here.....

Take it back to the dealer you bought it from.

Yes that's exactly it. They're in a better position to help than the dealer you didn't buy it from.
