The TSB does not address many of the possible problem areas that help cause the issue. They are replacing in theory the affected parts.

To repair everything properly, the added labor would be around an hour, and the parts about another $600 or so.

Replace This List

4 VCT solenoids
2 intake phasers
2 Exhaust phasers
1 primary timing chain
2 secondary timing chains
1 primary timing chain tensioner
1 left primary chain arm
1 right primary chain arm
1 left chain guide
1 right primary chain guide
2 secondary timing chain tensioner
2 secondary tensioner shoes
2 intake cam bolts
2 exhaust cam bolts
1 New idler pulley/coolant crossover
1 crank gear

Those are just timing parts that I am thinking of off the top of my head that i would change while I am in there. There are more but those are the key ones. Most notably are the 2 exhaust phasers, and the VCT solenoids without question. You can change every single internal engine part on this motor, and most fords, and if you have bad VCT solenoids and problems with oil flow it's game over.

Thank you for your post. That helps me understand everything a lot more. I'm pretty sure it's my pass side secondary chain that's rattling now. I'm gonna wait and see what the dealership says and then talk to them about replacing everything you listed.

Thank you for your help rbrown.

Had my '13 in at the beginning of February. Replaced the timing chain, but they didn't do the phasers. Different TSB's and they didn't find the newer one. Back in the shop two months later to go through it again.

Got mine back today new phasers timing chain and they also put plugs and a new water pump. Don't understand the water pump and I agreed to pay for the plugs. Where I got lucky is the extended warranty I bought....paid for itself in one trip. Going this weekend to try and trade it off but I actually want another one....is this an issue on 16's with the 3.5 also?

Shane make sure you get the oil changed asap with a new filter. It's not part of the tsb anymore.

Thanks for that info. I did not know that. Bad thing is that the oil in it was only 2 weeks old. Curious about the water pump changing....just while in the engine or maybe an issue with mine...

So, I have 87k on my 2012 and after a couple months of going back and forth with multiple dealers a year ago I was finally able to get the phasers, chains, and everything replaced, life was good....Until this weekend, when it came back.... Has anyone seen it come back after having everything replaced once?? I've put about 20k miles on it since getting it all replaced and since I'm out of warranty now this time its on me...

Explain everything? What exactly did you replace

I have the paperwork out in my truck so I will bring it back in after lunch and give the exacts, but off the top of my head, Both chains and tensioners, the first trip didn't fix the issue the second dealer did phasers. I will get the paperwork and list it all off.

I think you'll need it all replaced in one shot for it to get fixed, since if you had chain and tensioner replaced but with bad phasers, that chain and tensioner is done now even tho you got new phasers in. Those old phasers did enough damage to your chain.
