Ok so some may know about this some may not but it is something that is coming on strong with many showings at dealerships across America. So as most know it is timing chains that are prematurely stretching causing this startup noise. The news is that there is updated parts out there to address this and Ford now has a TSB on this issue formally admitting to it being a common problem. I go over it all in this video. There is also a link to just how it sounds in the description of the video on youtube. Hopefully more dealers will be willing to dive into the engine with some guidance from Ford now.

I agree that the codes should not be there. Something is wrong and they are there for a reason. I'm at 54,500 miles. I've already gone 1,000 since I noticed the codes. I think I may go another 1,000 and tell the dealer that the codes are still there and something is obviously wrong. They told me it could take 3 days or 3 months for the codes to clear themselves. I call bs.
They did not replace the VCT solenoids or cmp sensors. Are the solenoids hard to replace? Would disconnecting the battery overnight be beneficial?
I also do not have a SCT.
The truck has been running perfect.

I would drive that truck back to them and have them fix it. Period. If they are long term codes that are stored long term Keep alive memory won't matter if reset. Those are weird codes man, in all the motors I've build on this platform, never had this issue or any issue (knock on wood).
But I also do a post check after setting timing that I spend the time to do, but guarantees timing is proper. I don't know man, that's fishy at best. Some guys set there own timing marks based on where the position of the motor is when opened up. This is stupid to me, and I would turn the crank and go back to base timing where timing is first set at assembly. Technically it's the same thing, but that's where mistakes are made.

After lightly browsing through the thread (63 pages is a lot to take in) , I have questions. My 12 just started this within the last month or so, and I am at 126xxx miles. I seem to notice it moreso in the mornings, than I do in the afternoons. I am wondering what kind of time frame I have to get this fixed. It is not throwing any codes as of yet. Also, how much am I looking to fork out to have this done? For those of you out of warranty, did you take it to a dealership or to an independent shop? This is our only vehicle, and with my limited knowledge and lack of garage, I wont even consider tackling this on my own. Thanks,

Hard to tell in regards to timeline and when the error codes will come out. If you look at my post, I've had this very recently done, couple days ago, I've had no errors and from what I know you get errors when you are 6+ degrees. Mine seems it was at +12 degrees and I still had no codes but loud rattle in mornings after first time starting the truck each mornings. I honestly think I could hear it all the time though also, just enough to hear the chain.
That said, I got extended warranty for this reason. Normally, if you do it yoiurself I think it's about $1300 in parts alone. If you take it to any shop it's $2000 - $4000, depending on labour charges. Ford dealer, depends also, some will be like 3200 for the job, some more, depending what you ask to have changed. Since they are in there, I would change a few more parts then just the phasers and chain, like water pump. Might be few hundred to do that as extra.
My dealer showed me the invoice that was going to corporate under warranty, so the dealer could get paid for the service done. Since they were doing both TSB under warranty, newst TSB and 6 months old TSB, the cost to corporate from dealer was $4800. That's before they labeled an additional time needed for phasers.
Hope that helps put a bit perspective on it. I know RBrown will shine here even more with costs since he suggest I should do it myself just didn't have the guts. Lol

Wow, thats nuts. I am going to be screwed if it leaves me stranded...With that being said, when did you get the extended warranty? Was it through ford or a third party? Now im stressed...

Sorry man. I got my truck used with 63k, before the noise started, I got worried from reading all the stories on here. As much as I can fix and take things apart, wasn't going to take a chance on a 12k motor to do it. That said, I looked into Ford extended warranty and found a good source from all of them to be the cheapest (not 3rd party, direct ford) took the power train since it covered more then I'd be ok at fixing or replacing and took it. My noise started at 74k, good I got the warranty.
So really, so far my warranty cost me $1200 bucks and I'm covered till 134000 miles but already saved and it paid for itself.
It's stressful and I know, I can't afford to pay $600 a month for a 2018 so this one has about 8 more years to go before I look at used again. Now if the motor takes a dump before 134000 miles I'm good because I'll pay $50 for a $12k motor plus labor. That's if they don't stick me with it being my fault. So far, my dealer has been great suggesting to do both TSBs and telling me about the newest one that came out few weeks ago.
However since you've read this thread, you probably know that sometimes dealerships or corporate will work with you to pay half for the job or pay for even a bit, always helps.

I saw earlier on this thread that pumping the gas before starting got the oil flowing, and eliminating the rattle. Is this true, or did i misread? If so, how much do you pump the gas?
Also, I've started looking at extended service plans, what has everyone bought and were they any good?

You can still do Ford for up to 150k, 2 years, with Power train at $1500 or their Basic plan which covers more at $1755

It would save you from a big cost of this repair plus get little bit coverage. 3rd party ones might be pain for warranty.
I'd also make sure when the inspector for Ford warranty comes for a 15 minute drive with you, that you'd have nothing else rattling lol. Start it before he comes if it happens on start up.

I just took the power train. Personally, it covers my engine, turbos, transmission and axles. All I need pretty much, I'm sure there is little here and there also included.
