Here is what I have found for SSM 47394;

SSM 47394 – 2013-2018 F-150, 2015-2018 Transit/Expedition, 2015-2017 Navigator – 3.5L EcoBoost – Engine Tick Type Noise From Cylinder Block Some 2013-2018 F-150, 2015-2018 Transit/Expedition, and 2015-2017 Navigator vehicles equipped with a 3.5L EcoBoost engine with greater than 20,000 miles may exhibit a tick type noise from the cylinder block area.
This noise may be caused by a cracked piston skirt.
The noise can be isolated to a cylinder using a stethoscope or other suitable listening device.
Canceling the affected cylinder will reduce or eliminate the noise.
If the noise is isolated to a specific cylinder, it is recommended to replace the short block.
If the noise cannot be isolated using the methods described, refer to the Workshop Manual (WSM) for diagnosis.
A cracked piston skirt does not result in metal contamination of the engine or any related cylinder head damage.
Prior approval for short block replacement is not required under new vehicle limited warranty coverage.
You're feeding the troll in me.

I love the 3.5 Ecoboost powerplant. It's amazing. But it comes with pistons that are just not robust enough for the mission.

It's crazy that the Gen2 (non Raptor) didn't get pistons that would be considered a proper upgrade-response to the Gen1 history.

Just doesn't make sense.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this doesn't say anything about "at startup". And there would be no isolating to a specific cylinder, as the noise (referenced in the OP) doesn't last more than a few seconds on startup. No time to even grab a stethoscope.

So this isn't the same issue correct?

Exactly.

Broken piston skirt VS the infamous timing chain rattle.
Both suck though. :)

Both suck badly. Good news is I’m working on an economic option for a replacement short block. It’s close, very close and 100% reliable
So many folks who otherwise love their truck could benefit from a short block solution that not only gets their truck back on the road, but also FIXES the oem weak spots.

If the pricing is competitive as well? Then it's a no brainer.

At that point the only real obstacle is finding "the guy" to do the job right. (the swap)

That is exactly right, and my thought process behind the idea. It would be a cost effective way to have your cake and eat it too. so to speak. Designed to handle everything the stock short block cannot, and not be much more than a factory short block. Doing my best to get this done, we will see if it is possible. We are close.

New user here, In 2012 I bought an f150 with ecoboost and 40k in I got the dreaded rattle and had it repaired, then at 60k it started again but this time i traded it in for a 2017. Im at 20k this time and it starts making the rattle AGAIN! This morning i got a call from the dealership saying the cam phasers caused an issue and they told me there is an ssm on the issue under #47394. They will be replacing the short block but keeping the head and some other parts. He didnt give me any paperwork and said there wouldnt be any until the back ordered parts come in. Originally he told me it was a TSB from ford but when I went in to get my truck I asked him for the TSB number so I could look it up and get informed about it, he tried to look it up and said its actually an SSM#47394 as listed above. Does anyone know the success rate of this repair or should I bail on this truck after its fixed?
Oh my fricking g@d lol Gheeezis. I'm not laughing at you I'm laughing because that is the exact kind of luck I have and is making me really shy away from a 2019 3.5 EcoBoost and thinking really hard about a 2019 5.0. Or something completely different.

I couldn't even imagine how pissed at myself I'd be if I got another EcoBoost and had issues after all I went through with my old POS 2013 3.5.

Damn

I’ve got a 2018 coyote f150 at the moment. Leaves a lot to be desired and if I were to keep it It would need a blower or twins 110%

Yeah that's my only hold up, I feel the same way with all of them I've driven so far, and I'll be towing a 6k travel trailer with this next truck.
Most likely I'll end up with a 2019 3.5 and just hope for the best, and of course buy a nice loooong warranty.

But I do have a couple friends with tune only 2018 F150 5.0's and it definitely helps, it's no turbo vehicle gains but..

Here's my buddy's 2018 F150 5.0 extra cab with only a e85 tune and resonator delete.

I think I could live with that... But again the towing..

Definitely agree on tune only. This thing woke up a lot with a tune. One thing and I think I’ve mentioned this a few times. The gen2 3.5l is very similar to a coyote now. Seeing what I see inside the motors (both coyote or ecoboost) they are both super nice and I think reliability wise they are probably very evenly matched. I can see however how your gen1 debacle has you on the fence. That was a sh!t show

Lol yeah it absolutely gave me ecoboost PTSD.
I sh!t you not I've had a few dreams I was at the dealership with that old 2013 arguing with the tech about that sound and trying to figure out how I was going to get around without my truck. And that's since I've gotten rid of it and been in this 2.7.

But.. More and more each day I'm leaning towards a 2019 3.5 next year over the 5.0. The one and only reason is because of Towing, if I wasn't going to be towing I'd be in a 2019 5.0 in a second.
I'm just going to have to force myself to not listen for and stress over every little sound, which hopefully isn't going to be easier said than done with my past history.

Ahh why’d you guys post this?!?? Lol My truck totally has an engine tick. My problem is it’s very intermittent. 2017 3.5 with 50,000km

I am in need of a new engine on mine. It is 2012 with 72k miles. I had it parked on an incline for a few days while out of town and now I am told a new engine is needed because my chain broke off. Anyone else ever heard of this issue or have this happen.

If piston skirt was cracked would the ticking sound be noticeable all the time or would it be intermittent?

Good question. Hey @RMB_Ryan? Your thoughts?

If you are thinking you Have an ongoing tick you need to rip open your oil filter and check the media for metal.

Ryan so if my Gen 1 ever blows up, what are my options for new power to swap in? [emoji12]

I don’t have $60k to be looking at a ‘19 F150

I just want someone to have him build a 2.7 finally before mine wears out. [emoji4] Not a crazy performance build, just a solid motor that can handle OEM but tuned power forever.

Baaaaaaaaaaa
