Gen 1 3.5L Ecoboost Replace The Cam Phasers? Yes or No

Hi everyone. I need to reseal the front cover on my 2016 gen 1 3.5L Ecoboost with 160k miles. I'm planning to replace the timing chain, tensioners, and other small parts while I'm in there. I'm not sure about the cam phasers though. It's not a gen 2 so there's no new part to upgrade to and gen 1 phasers were never a problem. I'm not having any particular problems with timing chain stretch, this is just preventative.

The only reasons why I'm considering replacing the phasers is 1) I'm already there and replacing things, and 2) when you run a stretched chain over a gear it can cause excessive wear on the gear teeth which can then cause additional wear on the new chain.

If there's no need to replace the phasers then I'll be happy to save the $700 and not do it, but I don't want to save money just to have it open again in 40k miles to replace the phasers. I'll have it open in a few more hours of work so I'll be able to assess the condition of the teeth then.

What's the common wisdom for the gen 1?

Replace EVERYTHING! Phasers are part of Fords “timing kit”

Getting to and opening the front cover is the worst part about that job… why not refresh all the wearables inside? For me, pretty much everything I removed inside the cover was replaced with new motorcraft parts… outside the cover, if it had a bearing, seal, etc. it was replaced

If it was me and I was in there I would replace everything that I had access to.

RE whether they need to be replaced, well, who knows. The first gen ones don't fail quite like the second gen ones but at 160k miles and being right there......Id do it all and never look back. The chain wears to the sprockets which are an integral part of the phasers so even if they aren't a problem now a new chain with a non-worn pattern could cause you new and exciting problems!
