That's just crazy and sad misfortune

I don't think that kind of failure is very common though.
Yeah I doubt it’s common,y’all keep note I did get the truck at 120k and it was living with a a trailer that was a little under 3k pounds for the next 30k till it went out on me at 156 and who know how my baby was treated before I got a hold of it, I noticed it did have a little hair line leak in the the driver side valve cover and also leaked from the oil pan maybe if I would’ve caught those 2 earlier probably would’ve held up till I had the chance to swap out the old cam phasers though in my opinion I’d change out the noisy phasers as quick as possible mainly because I’d have a fear of the phaser stretching out the chain but that’s just my theory my truck was making extra loud noise before It turned off on me as soon as I made it to my drive way even then didn’t leave me on the side of the road 🤣😉

Well I got my truck back!

The good is that I can confirm no more rattle on cold start after a few days. That’s about the only good I can say about my service experience. This was a 6 week process for me to get this repair done. Here is my story:

February 15th I have an appointment for this repair to be done. Drop the truck off. One week later I call, and I’m told parts are on order should be another 7-10 days. 10 more days pass, I call two days in a row leave messages with service advisor personal number and no response. Weekend hits then Monday rolls around and it’s now day 21 since my scheduled appointment, and I have been without the truck this entire time. I get a ride from a buddy up to the dealer to find my truck sitting on the side lot looking like the day I left it 3 weeks ago. After finding my service advisor, I ask him if they had finished the repairs yet. He goes running around, but I already knew the answer. He comes back and says no we haven’t touched your truck yet because we are waiting on parts and have no ETA on them because back order. So I ask him what are we gonna do? I explain I can’t go without a vehicle any longer it and I feel it has been a big inconvenience for nothing at this point. I’m expecting him to give a loaner or rental, but he just tosses me the key to my truck and says take it we’ll call when we get the parts. OK so I just went without a truck for nearly a month and you are just now suggesting this. Two more weeks go by and I hear nothing. Call up service advisor and guess what….the parts are there! I must have miraculous timing. Drop the truck off and 4 days later it’s ready for pickup. So 6 weeks after my appointment and 4 weeks total without the truck I have it back in my possession. On the drive home all seems well. As I round the final stretch of tarmac to my home I get into boost and once I hit 5psi I’m hit with loud whooshing sound. Get home crawl under the truck and find hot side pipe and one cold side pipe on the CAC not connected with the clamps loose as if they were never retightened. Tightened these up and went for another drive but this time noticed a BOV pssshhh. Crawled under again and under second inspection found the BOV recirculation hose was not connected to the air intake tube allowing unfiltered air into the engine. To top it off I think the technician lost a few 10 mm sockets somewhere in the engine bay because now when I shut my door or going over bumps at low speed my truck sounds like a rattling tool box with loose sockets chattering away. Gonna have to spend a day investigating that sound and see what I can come up with.

Why is it even called an appointment?

It's literally not one.
They can’t find a software engineer to change to programs to call it anything else.

Ugh. 6 weeks later and now you've got charge pipes blowing off on the drive home? What else did they forget to tighten? Sounds like a "Rattling tool box"? Not good, man.
Right? The clamp on the charge pipe wasn’t even attempted to be tightened down with how loose it was on there. Not very confidence inspiring when I get to thinking about the work they did inside the engine.

Service advisor reached out to me this morning. I think my survey from yesterday must have reached the higher ups in the dealership. I’ll be taking the truck up there tomorrow to give somebody a ride along to hear the rattling noise in the engine bay.

And why I made the thread earlier about almost trading in the truck or selling before going through this!!!

Truck is back for good this time with no rattles. Turns out it was another loose hose clamp the mechanic had over-torqued and stripped. Quiet as a church mouse now though :)

While I had a bad experience with my local service department, your mileage may vary. I don’t mean to push anyway away from having this repair done. Even after all I went through I would absolutely do it again.

All 4 of my phasers were malfunctioning and I had been noticing loss in performance and mileage gradually over the last several months. I started to notice my truck wouldn’t hit -1.0 OAR some time before this repair and I was seeing higher positive knock numbers more frequently. Sometimes when briskly rolling into the throttle away from a stop the truck would peg +6 knock instantly and tank my OAR once I let out. I drove the truck for a month with the stock tune trying out various gas stations 93 octane and best OAR I saw was -0.75. After having the repair done, I immediately loaded up my AO performance tune from Gearhead and within minutes of leaving the dealership I was up to -1.0 with some negative knock to boot. Truck is loving life now you can just feel it!

Here is a list of the parts needed for this job:

Don't underestimate how influential your statement "Even after all I went through I would absolutely do it again" might be to someone like myself. :)

I've contemplated on occasions just whether or not I would ignore the clack on my Gen2 or Gen3 truck, and both you and my Cajun-brother have both had it done recently.

His went smoother than yours, but you both now describe quiet trucks that are running like they should.

I'm watching to see if you both feel the same way 5000 miles from now. And obviously am pulling for it to be a thumb up.

64,000 miles and no phaser ecm update, guess I have to keep fingers crossed

My new-to-me '19 is the first vehicle I have ever owned with start/stop. I get why OEMs are making this a standard feature now, it does save a bit of fuel, especially when you hit a 4 or 5 minute long traffic light. But there is nothing worse than hitting a quick stop sign, or light that is about to turn green, and "SHLUnk" the engine shudders to a stop. Just for you to lift your foot off the brake and start it right back up. Such a pointless bit of wear and tear. So I find myself reaching for the button on the dash quite a bit.

The other thing I did was use ForScan to increase my desired battery state of charge from 80 to 85%, and now I get start/stop disabled "due to charging" quite often.

Anyway back to the cam phasers. Definitely they will experience the most harsh vibration during engine stopping and starting as the whole timing chain assembly gets thrashed.

Just learned about the "flood start" from this whole discussion as well. Gonna give that a try next time my truck sits still for a full day or two. But I don't have any noticeable phaser rattle now at 55k miles... powertrain warranty coming to and end this year.

Do I take it in to my local Ford dealer and have them inspect? Tempted to let it ride and just take my chances, knowing that I will :
1) always use good oil and change every 5-6k miles
2) not let start/stop be active often
3) maybe start using flood-start technique when the truck has sat for days
4) what else is helpful?
My '18 had 11 miles on the Odo, when I drove it home, in May 2019. It has been tuned (5* 93 Performance), since about 500 miles. An Airaid dry CAI is the only other mod. Ford synth blend and Ford filter, every 5,000 miles, religiously. I don't beat on it and I haven't towed more than a couple ATVs (switching to the 5* Perf/Tow tune), but certainly don't baby it. A good old fashioned Italian Tune Up is on order, at least weekly. Even with 305/45-22 General Grabber UHPs, it won't hook from a start (it's a 2WD only) and spins on second and barks third (and sometimes fourth). Haven't dyno'd, but the Torque app estimates 429RWHP...and I believe it.

Currently at 58,000 miles, but once I heard about the cam phaser issue, I immediately started the gas pedal/delay start trick (on every start, cold or warm) and disengage the Stop/Start feature, after every time I start the truck. Don't remember exactly when those revelations came out, but I have no startup noises, other than the usual injector and fuel pump ones. Maybe I just got lucky, but I am a believer in the oil starvation explanation and any strategy to keep the phasers oiled is a win.

So interesting because after @snakebitten mentioned the pedal/delay 5 sec before start up, I have too been doing the same thing and it sure makes a difference at start up. I used to use my Ford App to start the vehicle in the mornings and stopped doing that,,,, although the sound would pretty much almost go away after the oil pressure got up and warm..... I also swapped to full synthetic, and believe that has helped as well......I have the start stop disabled a long time ago, hate that feature anyways...... And the same for me, just the typical wastegate or injector rattle....... I optimistically believe!
