Got my truck back and I'm happy to say the rattle is completely gone after installing the updated phasers! Maybe it would've been fine to continue ignoring it but I'd like to keep this truck long term and the repair didn't cost me a penny so I'm very happy! It will be interesting to see if the rattle returns after I rack up enough miles or if the updated part truly fixes the issue permanently.

I am happy that you are happy!
Looks like (from your earlier post) they had you truck in the shop for about 2 weeks, right? What oil change interval do you follow? In my opinion, changing oil around 5000 or less miles, as well as turning off the auto stop/start is a key to longevity with the cam phasers.

Full synthetic every 5000 miles since purchased pre-owned with 20,000 miles. Start/stop disabled since the day of purchase as well.

It was actually closer to 3 weeks in the shop but most of that was due to waiting on the parts and working through the extended warranty claim to make sure it was paid for. Once the parts arrived the work itself was completed in 2, 3 days.

I do understand utilizing warranty.

Most posts I read say it's a temporary fix and it will come back.

Also, most posts I read speak of horror stories of a myriad of new problems after dealer had it for a week doing who knows what to it.

My real question is, does anyone at all have even one verified example of an engine failure attributed 100% to a noisy vct unit(s)? I have been unable to find ANY, just wondering if you guys have any proof or knowledge of any? Ford calls it an annoying noise and nothing more. Are they right?
I’ve ask several mechanics 1 worked at Ford dealership and they all know about noise but not a single failure do to phasers. Also have read hundreds of posts over the last couple of years , its all just worries but zero legitimate sounding failures. I’m just going to continue low mileage oil changes and during cold utilize throttle floored startup so it cranks before it fires to up pressurize system and enjoy this awesome truck

I can't recall a catastrophic failure over the phasers,,,,,,, but then again I try not to research it too much since I have a 19 with almost 85k and. well you know,,,,, Shhhhh

I have a 2017 3.5L and have some rattle at startup and that's about it, 76k miles now. I talked to a tech at a local Ford dealer and he said that they have done numerous cam phaser jobs under warranty, but have never done any out of the warranty period at all and thinks it's annoying but unnecessary.

Probably because a dealership wants $1-1500 more than a reputable independent shop. The rattle is more embarrassing than mechanically damaging.

what really bugs me about the phaser rattle is that some people have had their trucks repaired multiple times. Is the cause really being addressed? what If the cause was something other than the phasers? A really expensive cause to remedy? Luckily at 140K miles I have not had the rattle yet. I just have the mysterious 1 quart of oil consumption going to Texas from Iowa and no oil consumption on the return trip.
I would be really interested to hear if they replaced all the components when doing the job on these ones that come back multiple times.
As I posted in here I recently had my Phasers done mainly just because they had the front engine cover off anyways for a weep repair under warranty. Initially they just changed the Phasers and lo and behold when I get the truck back after a few days I have the start of rattle randomly which I didn't have before. After taking it back and having them change EVERYTHING, chain, tensioners, Phasers… No more rattle.
Since warranty only covers the Phasers I wonder if a lot of these people that have it come back after the repair aren't paying the extra out of pocket to have the other parts replaced as well

Hey all. Like title says, what happens if you just live with the noise? Ford says that's all it is anyway, annoying noise. Does anyone have proof or can share experience where ignoring it caused catastrophic damage (that can be 100% attributed to a noisy vct unit). Thanks!
Yep, phaser spring broke off and ripped a hole in my valve cover.

2019 F-150 w/ 3.5 EB. Got the CSP back in 2021 about the cam phaser chatter. Wasn’t having any major noise from the engine at that time plus Ford says it’s all cosmetic! Didn’t want to sign up for an invasive repair if nothing is wrong. Fast forward a year later and I start to notice the chatter on start up. It progressively got worse and then I started to have a rough idle with a solid check engine light. Took it into Ford for diagnosis and they determined the cam phasers need to be replaced. $6,400 estimated cost.

Mission Creep continues.
~$2400>>>>>>>>>>$6400

And that's NOT likely a parallel increase in price for parts, compared to labor. (I bet)

I could be wrong.
