I would not go lower than KBB value. Put it out there at the $16K private sale average price. You have mentally already gotten used to a lower price, so if someone does come along and offers $15 or $14 you are more prepared to take to offer. No use starting at the price you're willing to take as people will come in lower anyway.
By offering at the KBB price, people will see it as a fair price based on 3rd party numbers, not some guy over inflating his truck's price because he put a lot into it.

Make sure in your ad you include "no low-ballers, I know what I got." That usually keeps the riff raff away

I would price it a little high because you inevitably will get people offering way lower than asking. If you list it for $13k, people will offer you $10k. When I sold my GX460 in February, I had like 3 people be like "Hey, Ill come pick it up for $16k right now, cash in hand" when I had just listed it 10 hours before for $23k.

Funny, I sold a boat and another truck this spring and the buyers all started out with the "Is this available?" If I didn't reply to those, I might have missed out on buyers.

My reservation is that I'm selling a somewhat custom truck.. it's not for everyone, and I don't want to further limit that market by asking full price. I'm assuming someone will buy it and need to spend $$ to put it back to stock.

Nice good used trucks are hard to find, especially maintained ones. I’m with Matt on this one. Price it on the higher end and take reasonable offers.

 

I'm still going back and forth on IF I want/need to sell it now.

I know next year I'll need a 3/4 ton to do the work, but for this year I can get away with the 1/2. I'd rather not put the 1/2 ton through it though, as it could cause wear or damage that would devalue it.

Of course that's all just speculation.. I have no reason to believe the truck wouldn't handle it. And getting into a "new" truck means potential for unknown issues.. the last thing I need right now is to have a breakdown in my tow vehicle.

 

Any comparable f150’s listed in your area? I take little stock in KBB values. They often miss the market. Look at what else is available and then apply your strategy. Also agree that you should leave a little room to negotiate, but if you’re too high, people will just skip over you

 

Any cheaper 3/4 tons around that would do the job for the time being?

 

Are you planning on buying the 3/4 ton new, or a used one through a dealer? Have you considered the tax break you will get by trading on a 3/4 ton? That alone, plus less hassle of selling privately, may make it worth trading?

The GX I sold private because I knew I would never get what it was worth through a dealer being that its semi rare and was modified decently. But with the F150 being a bit more of a "commodity", I didnt feel it was worth selling privately. There are probably 100 other black lariats for sale that were just like mine that it was competing with.

 

Used. I do not have the budget for new.

I guess I could see what they'd give me for trade to consider it, but I had planned on purchasing private party.

EDIT: Nevermind all this.. I'll need a second truck, so the plan is to keep the f150 and looking for a used super duty.
