We are considering purchasing a 2014 F150 EcoBoost (XLT) in good condition (one-owner, 70k miles, 3.55 axle, 7450 payload package, trailer sway control). Today we had a buyer's inspection done. No major issues discovered, however the mechanic told us that he would not recommend an EcoBoost for towing at all -- something along the lines of the turbos + only six cylinders causing too much strain on other components such that, over time, it adds up to major repairs ($5k-$8k). He claimed to have seen this several times and has had to do these repairs to the utter dismay of F150/EcoBoost owners. We're planning on relatively infrequent towing use (2-horse trailer from time to time, local area and/or within the state).
We've read several posts on this forum from owners who seem to really like the EcoBoost for towing & who appear to do a lot of towing. And in our research, from professional reviews to Ford's towing tables/specs to YouTube videos on EcoBoost, we've not really seen any serious claims about the EcoBoost being a bad/expensive choice for towing over the long haul. Is our mechanic jaded, or exaggerating perhaps? Or is he correct -- does the cost of EcoBoost ownership, over time, add up to expensive repairs due to towing?
