My 2013 developed a knock a few months ago and I immediately parked the truck and began researching and buying parts to make the repairs. I have cam phasers, actuators, and timing chain kit all from cloyes. I began disassembly and when I removed the actuators on the left side they both had metal shavings on them. Anyone else have this same problem? And what else should I check for before installing the new parts. I have already ordered a new oil pump with a higher flow rate.

Welcome to the forum. Folks who can best help you will be along soon. We have many who’ve torn open their engines and will be able to help.
Any reason you bought parts from cloyes vs Ford?

Just research that I did at the time was saying cloyes was the best option for anything timing related. Now I’m actually having second thoughts and wishing I would have gone with Ford.

If you have a knock, you're going to need bottom end work. If you have metal shavings, you're probably going to need a new motor.

You’re not supposed to say that. You’re supposed to tell me everything is going to be fine and my baby will be back on the road in no time. lol.

Unfortunately that glitter doesn't look good. I'd cut the oil filter apart and check that. That's likely a bearing going out if it's knocking.
One thing I read last night said that the shavings were likely from the cam phasers. Do you know anything about that and if that is possibly true?

Did you cut the filter apart?
I don't know the oil flow path to be able to tell you if that could have come from the phasers.

What is the best way (tool) to cut it open? And should I cut it in half lengthwise or just cut the top off?
Best tool is a filter cutter. Hacksaw works in a pinch with a vise as well.

Is all this metal in your actuators new? Aka since your recent timing job. The knocking is problematic, need to know where its coming from.

If you're sure it's from the phasers/related hardware, yeah, so it. The knock is probably going to remain after the timing job.

I think I paid like $25 for a filter cutter on Amazon. Then use a hacksaw to cut through the filter pleats top and bottom.

Unfortunately the filter is full of fine shavings. L

It's toast. Are the metal flakes magnetic, they would appear to be aluminum or bearing material.
