MPT or 5 Star Tuning

Good evening
I have recently been getting into doing performance modifications to my truck and so far I have installed the aFe Stage 2 Intake, Cross db exhaust with resonator delete, and ups mega catch can

I currently want to buy a tune but I am noticing that mot is a lot more expensive. MPT's SCT X4 with three of their custom tunes costs me $714 before delivery and tax. 5 stars SCT with 3 custom tunes will cost me $450 before shipping and tax. Is MPT worth spending all that money over 5 stars tunes. Keep in mind my truck is sitting at 173,000 miles and I daily drive it every day ranging for 150-300 miles.

I do make sure to stay on top of maintenance with every 5k miles I do an oil change with the hem rotorcraft oil and filter. I recently got all the carbon build up cleaned up, spark plugs changed, new coolant, fresh diff and transferase fluids.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Both excellent companies and tunes, I've ran both on multiple trucks, can't go wrong with either.
I say get the device wherever it's cheaper then buy a single tune from the other, trying at least a couple different companies is a wise move to find which works best for you and your truck.

I want to try the prx but I am afraid it'll be to straining on my truck with the miles she has. 5 stars price is very appealing not going to lie

You know there is much to be said about adding a bunch of horsepower to a vehicle that is plugging along nicely with 173,000 many miles on it. Some things are better left as is. This comment is of course assuming that the engine is original.

BoostKing Tuning also offers a very drivable tune, and it doesn't "feel" taxing at all.

If it were me, pick up the SCT device by itself from a reseller. Some have it just under 350. Try the preloaded tunes. Then reach out to different tuners and ask them questions.

Boostking, Unleashed, MPT, and Gearhead are all great. Gearhead’s tunes are more OEM+ which is perfect for those wanting a bit more power without sacrificing drivability/reliability.

For what it's worth OP I have several friends who didn't tune their trucks until well near 100k miles and some that tuned way before that (brand new with less then 1k miles) and now have 130k plus miles that run 5 Star, one that runs a different company, and they have been beyond happy with no issues.
I know a ridiculous amount of people who have been running 5 Star for a decade or more, no exaggeration.

As mentioned though it's always a chance to take and can be even more so of a chance with higher mileage vehicles, Ecoboost.

Thank you for the information and to everybody else for their advice

I have decided to go with 5 star its a deal too good I can't pass up on and I will be ordering it tomorrow as I am going to go with my mechanic to give the truck a final look over and so he can get me the strategy code with his scan tool. At 200k miles I may take it in to get the timing chain done as preventative maintenance and cam phasers as it sometimes rattles at cold start but I have noticed if I let the motor crank for 5-10 seconds it doesn't rattle.

The biggest thing I would be looking at with higher mileage and tuning would be the turbos, since the tune will make them work harder to create more boost (depending how agressive of a tune you get) you will be shortening the life span of the turbo and since you already have a lot of miles on them (assuming they haven’t been replaced already) it would probably be worth trying to price out new units to be ready for them to be replaced. I would also get the timing chain fixed before tuning just to be safe as well.

I plan on doing timing chain at 200k miles as I haven't had any symptoms of a worn out timing chain and my turbos where just recently looked at because I had that infamous coolant leak my mechanic also went and replaced the outside turbo housing but he said the internals where solid so I shouldn't have to worry about them for a good while

My 2011 had MPT and 5Star tunes I liked the 93 PRX as a daily and the 5Star 93 Perf/Tow for everything else. Motor was still going strong, but trans was dying when i got rid of it at 157k miles (58k miles tuned). It was never quite right after the lead frame issues and replacement.

Update the tune has been ordered its juts a matter of waiting for it arrive and it should be ready to go out of the box as I sent 5Star the strategy code. I chose 5 star because the deal they had was to hard to pass up on. I ended up paying 465.92 dollars for the tuner it self and 4 custom tunes. I chose 85+ Adaptive Octane, 93 Performance/tow, 93 performance, and 89 performance. I got the adaptive tune because I plan on going to Mexico in that truck in the future but I don't trust the gasoline in Mexico.

When you do install the tune be sure to go thru the options the SCT options there is a list some that may be of interest. I set tire diameter/size, remove speed limiter, set idle/neutral RPM cut off at 4000, in gear at 6500, and boost shift presures to +10% on 1-2 2-3 3-4 shifts. You can select these irreguardless of the tune installed, even re-load the stock tune with options. KM

MPT has also been a half second quicker in the quarter every run. My 5 star tune runs a 2.00-2.15 sixty foot, and my MPT is consistently 1.6-1.8
What tune and what are you seeing in the 1/4 mile times and 0-60mph, if you wouldn't mind sharing

Sorry for the delay/ The 13.02 run is the GH AO Tune on 91 octane. The 12.93 is the same GH AO Tune on E30 since I can not get 93 Octane in my area...... No revisions

I believe the version GH AO is the latest, however he may have refined it a tad...... Of course I have had the pleasure to work with GH and refine my tunes to where I am today with a daily driver E30/50 AO tune, but will say, for winter driving I am running the No revision AO tune and it is fabulous...... I will make a hit when the streets dry up and see if I can better the 13.02 on 91 octane, I believe I can ,,, because the base line run was only one pass, not too aggressive on the launch,,,,,,

So I have been working on my truck in Hawaii with MPT in Florida so the time difference is hassle. But let me tell you with absolute confidence that MPT has got to be the best. But let me also add that getting a dragy for a 150$ really helps dial in the tunes. I built my truck for towing regularly and couldn’t resist adding well over 100 Hp at the wheels for 6-700$ when I got my first tune I was pretty much set and extremely happy. I hate computers I’m of the generation that is supposed to be affluent in them. Just made 40 I absolutely stink at them. Especially windows. Anyway I decided I’d data log and had a couple requests of what I’d like to adjust if possible. So I sent my data logs and the next day I had a new email with adjusted tune. Not exaggerating at all it was so much better. Free data log adjustments for 30 days. I encourage you to take full advantage. Also can’t say enough about the dragy helping rather than butt dyno. I’m on my 8th version and with only a tune and cold air intake which we all know is for sound I ran in the 11s with subwoofers and bone stock other than tune. Because I was so into data logging and leaving truck mostly stock MPT posted on their website my first day at the track. It thes silver 4door 4x4. Just tonight I did some data logging and I ran an 11.8 0-60 3.55 on 33in all terrains. I tested the draggy against the the track timer and within average of 3 hundredths of second on all 8 runs I’ve done. And always the dragy was slightly slower.
